get used to it friend, AMD cards run hotter than a model on a runway. Srs RX 580 with good case flow and 60% fan curve is still like 50-55c which is crazy when its on low power mode.
Yeah, the auto undervolting option in the drivers is worth a click. Do that, then manually adjust the fan curb a bit.. it will help considerably. I have to wonder how all the results of these cards would change with auto-undervolt---- OMG STEVE, YOU HAVE TO DO ONE MORE 5700 XT VIDEO HERE IT IS! lol
Great round up and review! Thank you for taking the time to pull this together. I got a new open box MECH 5700 XT for $348 USD and thought it was a great deal, until I heard the hair dryer sound coming from the computer...wow, it's aggressively loud!
I have the Challenge after getting it in a prebuild. It's def hot out of the box but I undervolted it and added 4 120mm fans to my case for a total of 8 and that combo has dropped the temps by 20 degrees. It's a little loud with all the fans running but I actually wear noise canceling headphones and overall I'm not that sound sensitive. Otherwise, it runs like a charm now in all my games.
Hahaha~ Loser me! I bought the absolutely the worst card from the list! (never pre-purchase if you aren't going to build it asap to test it) I actually stuck as many of those small low profile memory chip heatsinks as I could hit on to Asus Tuf flat memory plate and it actually lowered the temp by few. Now runs below 100 under Furmark. With my 1080p realworld gaming, mem temp is around 85~90C max.
xxgg: At least you did what you had to in order to fix the problem. With memory temps under 95 degrees it shouldn’t fail in the next couple of years now.
It's okay man, at least you can enjoy your PC right now. While me here, right now, still got a cliffhanger by the Phanteks P360X and Antec Katana RAM :(. When is those things released for real??? 😭
Is still reach out to Asus and see about getting an rma. You could just tell them it keeps crashing in game and you believe it’s overheating somewhere. I hope Asus steps up and recalls then if not I’d personally be weary of purchasing from them in the future myself.
Have you ever considered plotting the core temperature against the fan rpm? This way you could create a graph that describes the efficiency of a given cooler. (You could even plot a regression function through all results and calculate the standard deviation for the difference between a result and the expected result using the regression function. Results greater than the standard deviation are worse than the average result, lower results are better)
Bought myself the Sapphire Nitro+, after sitting on the decision for 2 months, I needed it for CoD MW, as my R9 290X from 2013 wasn't letting me use 200% resolution scaling (which is important for me at 1080p gaming), thanks for rounding out all the XT models it made making the decision much more relaxing!
Holy thorough testing, Batman. Super appreciate the power consumption, total system consumption, and decibels. Nobody every talks about how loud these things are.
Thank you for doing this video! Weird how the Powercolor Red Dragon seems to have been so under-promoted by Powercolor, given that it's actually a really good card.
I bought an Asrock Challenger 5700XT because I wanted the XT as soon as possible and all the other options had sold out within hours of release. Frankly I wish I'd gotten the reference blower model. This is the loudest card I've ever had. It makes my whole desk hum and I can feel that through my HOTAS even though I have that soft mounted. Fortunately temps do seem stable even running furmark for a long time, but it's working hard to make that happen. If I'd bought the reference card it'd still be hot and loud, but at least I'd have that daft little notch to make me smile.
Thanks for doing the tests. I purchased the ASRock Challenger and found similar issues with heat. To solve for the heat issues, created a custom gaming fan profile which is basically a straight line running the fan at 2200RPM for consistency at any temp above 60C. I have a Mini ITX build in a Core V1 case and the normal two slot card Challenger 5700XT was the only one that fit other than the reference blower. I also purchased the Sapphire reference 5700XT with a waterblock for a microATX build. At stock both where not great performers but with some tweaking I was pretty impressed.
I have to say Steve - I'm very impressed you got sponsorship from Case Gear. When I used to work there we used to get emails extremely frequently about people wanting sponsorship and it was always company policy that they didn't - so it's a testament to the quality of your channel that they would make an exception.
Hey 5700XT is really competitive. Glad to see a high end AMD card competing well. 5700 and 5700 XT are doing so well, in fact, that reportedly, Nvidia is going to be bringing back the 2070. Not sure how well that's gonna do tbh. They'll probably put the MSRP at $400 if they do. You can quote me on that. I'll be VERY surprised if they go lower than that.
Bought a mech oc cuz it was at least $50 cheaper than any other counterparts available here in canada. Besides performance wise even the red dragon( which is considered the “best” out of the bunch and also $100 more expensive ) only barely surpasses mech oc by a negligible margin. I don’t care about fan “noise” and those bullshit thermal stats unless they really visibly hampers the performance - which they do not.
I'm between the Sapphire's Pulse and Nitro. They seem the best all rounders. The PowerColor's cards are right next to the Sapphire's too but Mexico does not sell them :(. Gigabyte is a bit more expensive than the Sapphire Nitro even, so with this facts in mind... I guess we have a winner for this holiday... Thank you Steve!!
I've thought about it but I prefer to show the out of the box experience and you can work out which cards work well very easily with the data already provided. It might be something we add in the future but for now we're happy with this format. I might add a dBA/GPU Temp graph though for an easier comparison between the two.
Hardware Unboxed: I agree, show temps out of the box so people who don’t tweak with their card know how it will perform. However, right after that slide maybe do a sound normalized trial as it discounts any fan-temperature manipulation by the manufacturers just to look good in reviews. Great work anyways I know these benchmarks took a hell of a long time to do.
I'm surprised Power Color wouldn't send you a Red Dragon to test because it tests very well. AND it's only two slots. What a great card for a tiny ITX build. Power Color should trust their product more and send you stuff to test.
ive been using xfx since i first got a pc , recently upgraded to the XFX RX 5700XT ULTRA Thicc II, honestly i dont get what everyone complained about , with this card you just have to tune it about 30 minutes properly (I have a video about this) and then it runs sooo good, its so stable, and very very fast, i've seen benchmarks about this card and it is about the same and in some games even better than NVIDIA's RTX 2070 Super at $100 less, and even the 1080Ti. BIG win
The Gigabyte card actually looks the best overall tbh, just looking at numbers. power consumption is very good, some games it does particularly well for the power it draws, really good acoustics, best GPU temp, VRM and GDDR6 temps are acceptable. I'd get one if I were building a system right now.
Joel M great gpu. got it myself, with light games the fans dont even spin (under 60C) , great performance and pretty low noise at gpu intensive games. Also was one of the cheaper cards in my country.
Clearly the sapphire card is the best performer under temps and clock. That being said, should have some headroom for OC. Thank you for the breakdown of temps for the line up. Very helpful for any enthusiast! I salute you guys over at hardware unboxed. More videos like this please! Straight to the point. I like how you aren't bought like some reviewers and keep companies on their toes sending anything your way. Good job.
I bought the Power Color red dragon because it was one of the only cards that fits 2 slots and thats all i have room for in my mini-itx system. And so far, it's been great and quiet, i didnt even have to touch the fan curve yet in my Node 304!
Pulse for the win. Best built out of the lot, usually get it for a good price, and it uses the reference PCB so you can get watercooling gear easily matched up if you ever want to go down that route.
Challenge accepted. Gigabyte Gaming OC is ordered and on the way! Not a huge performance jump from my Strix Vega 64, but a huge reduction in power/heat inside my case. I have a Crystal 570 case as well, and the glass side actually gets hot to the touch on demanding games.
@Hardware Unboxed: You mentioned in your ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT review that it was consuming too much power and that ASUS had acknowledged it being a firmware issue and that a downloadable fix was underway and possibly even put up by the time the review went live. Now I got that card as a birthday gift and I would like to see if I could get that fix for the card but ASUS has yet to publicly release that fix. You, by any chance, have any more info regarding this?
@@Hardwareunboxed Yikes. Such a shame, as it could be a great 5700 XT... How could they screw it up so much, while having the fundamentals down. It's almost as if they wanted the product to suck (or at least, be an unremarkable card with an expensive price tag) :/
Please DON'T buy an Asus AMD card! They promised a fix for their Vega cards too - and I returned 3 last month (newest models, so should be the "fixed" models). All three had high VRM and memory temperature (over 100/110°). And now they're doing it again. Don't support shitty companies for doing shitty stuff.
Hardware Unboxed I would highly appreciate if you could do a review of temps/noice on these new drivers of the strix rx5700xt. I love how the card looks, but hearing people mention several problems about it makes me feel scared about getting it. People say to have a common issue with this model too, they say that the VRMS are not in solid contact with the PCB because of not having a correct design (basically if you move up or down the pcb it will bend pretty easily and stop touching vrms, causing bad temps). Cheers!

@@Orcawhale1 I appear to be suffering from stupidity at the moment. Why does that mean it doesn't make sense? Obviously with the focus being the price finding the ultimate cheap 5700 would save a lot of people from buying bad cheap 5700 cards. The results won't necessarily carry over from the xt test as the silicon is worse and a cooling solution which does the job for the xt won't necessarily do the same for a 5700 with xt bios that isn't intended and tested to work at those frequencies.
@@elirantuil5003 Yeah it would. RX 5700 is a "defective" XT, the Silicon is exactly the same. The only difference is in power output due to fully enabled chip on the XT. Nor does it have anything to do with bios.
@@Orcawhale1 I probably didn't explain myself well enough. I meant buying 5700 only to flash it with xt bios in order to remove the cap. This would essentially make it unbinned 5700xt, which may run hotter and consume more power to get to 5700xt like performance than a standard 5700xt. Which begs the question: can these cheaper cooling solutions handle it? The more expensive aib models probably can, but can the cheap ones do it as well? I think it is worth testing.
@@elirantuil5003 Again, yes they most certainly can. As boardpartners arn't designing a entirely new cooler just for that card(Unless were talking extremely high end cards like Lightning).

Dinu Vladeanu gonna run that all perfectly. As an example I can get 100+FPS on ultra in Modern Warfare. Yeah, the auto undervolting option in the drivers is worth a click. Do that, then manually adjust the fan curb a bit.. it will help considerably. I have to wonder how all the results of these cards would change with auto-undervolt---- OMG STEVE, YOU HAVE TO DO ONE MORE 5700 XT VIDEO HERE IT IS! lol
If you can try re-applying the thermal paste, the stock stuff is garbage.
Great round up and review! Thank you for taking the time to pull this together. I got a new open box MECH 5700 XT for $348 USD and thought it was a great deal, until I heard the hair dryer sound coming from the computer...wow, it's aggressively loud!
How's the performance comparatively? Any overclocking?
Thanks for the video. I'm getting ready to get one of these. My area the powercolor is on sale for $359 in store. Glad it's got good stats.
Nice! I paid $450 including Tax for mine on Amazon with free shipping.
(never pre-purchase if you aren't going to build it asap to test it)
I actually stuck as many of those small low profile memory chip heatsinks as I could hit on to Asus Tuf flat memory plate and it actually lowered the temp by few. Now runs below 100 under Furmark. With my 1080p realworld gaming, mem temp is around 85~90C max.
xxgg: At least you did what you had to in order to fix the problem. With memory temps under 95 degrees it shouldn’t fail in the next couple of years now.
Harsh lesson but at least you did not need to spend a lot to learn it
It's okay man, at least you can enjoy your PC right now.
Lesson is... don't buy before reviewers get their hands first. (Well... qualifying reviewers if you know what i mean)
Yay! I got the gigabyte last weekend for $400.
Extremely useful content. Thank you!
I have to say Steve - I'm very impressed you got sponsorship from Case Gear. When I used to work there we used to get emails extremely frequently about people wanting sponsorship and it was always company policy that they didn't - so it's a testament to the quality of your channel that they would make an exception.
This is the one I've been waiting for. Thank you so much, Steve. It's the Red Dragon for me. No question, as I won't waste a third PCIe slot.
I just bought a Powercolor RX 5700XT Red Dragon , and i am very happy with my purchase... I bought it after viewing this video... Good job

@@apocalypseap If that''s true.. I don't like it. 5700XT is clearly better than the 2070 non s, unless you desperately want ray tracing.
@@issacb6124 Yeah, ideally I'd like to see them release it at $350. That would make it pretty competitive.
It's Jensen huang here, i don't see enough rtx boxes on this video..

Definitely buy Nitro+, it's an awesome card. In fact I've got one RX 5700 XT Nitro+ myself.
It might be worth adding a sound standardised test like GN. But solid work as Alway
I've thought about it but I prefer to show the out of the box experience and you can work out which cards work well very easily with the data already provided. It might be something we add in the future but for now we're happy with this format. I might add a dBA/GPU Temp graph though for an easier comparison between the two.
@@Hardwareunboxed I think it would be good to stop cards brute forcing there way to the top. But you do great work, keep it up benchmark god
@Florian Oprescu why buy the reference model?
i think even a fix rpm comparison could be nice. eg all of them at 2500 rpm
I'm surprised Power Color wouldn't send you a Red Dragon to test because it tests very well. AND it's only two slots. What a great card for a tiny ITX build. Power Color should trust their product more and send you stuff to test.
Steve, if you'll keep making 5700XT videos, I'll keep watching them.
Excellent content, as always!
ive been using xfx since i first got a pc , recently upgraded to the XFX RX 5700XT ULTRA Thicc II, honestly i dont get what everyone complained about , with this card you just have to tune it about 30 minutes properly (I have a video about this) and then it runs sooo good, its so stable, and very very fast, i've seen benchmarks about this card and it is about the same and in some games even better than NVIDIA's RTX 2070 Super at $100 less, and even the 1080Ti. BIG win
The Gigabyte card is incredibly quiet! Absolutely thrilled with mine!
is it compatible with msi mystic light?
@@abdelrauf1408 That I do not know - I disable all RGB and used the Gigabyte RGB utility to do this.
Joel M ok thanks
@Hardware Unboxed:
You mentioned in your ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT review that it was consuming too much power and that ASUS had acknowledged it being a firmware issue and that a downloadable fix was underway and possibly even put up by the time the review went live.
Now I got that card as a birthday gift and I would like to see if I could get that fix for the card but ASUS has yet to publicly release that fix.
You, by any chance, have any more info regarding this?
I'm still waiting on Asus for the fix they promised weeks ago.
Don't support shitty companies for doing shitty stuff.
if your looking at the upper-tier 5700 XT's then the Red Devil or sapphire nitro would be the best option.
Cheers!

Wouldn't make sense, as all the aib rx 5700 use the same cooler design as their XT models.
