Oh! dear brethren, the belief in the actual presence with the Church of a Spirit that teaches all faithful members thereof, is far too much hesitatingly held by the common Christianity of this day. We ought to be the standing witnesses in the world of the reality of a supernatural influence, and how can we be, if we do not believe it ourselves, and never feel that we are under it?” Alexander Maclaran
All regenerated believers are illuminated... All you have to do is sit in (a) church awhile, then see what people say, what they put up with/allow, and how they live to know that assertion that was made is entirely off the mark.
At the 23rd minute mark, our brother says that the standard for those who say “thus sayeth the Lord” is the same in the Old and New. This is incorrect. Under the new, Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 14 that when one prophesied, the others judge the prophecy. He also speaks of this in 1 Thessalonians 5. We don’t murder people today whose prophecies are incorrect. We correct them and hold the accountable.
I don’t believe this. I definitely agree with being careful about saying God told me something but I do not believe he can only use scripture to speak to us. I believe he can use a dream, a situation, or a miracle(all must be centered around scripture). Around the 16 minute mark he says “God doesn’t do things in a miraculous manor” that’s pretty much saying God cannot use impossible means to do something. Which goes against what God says in his word. “But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18:27 Sarah conceiving Issac was impossible, yet God did the impossible in that situation. My mother had cancer and was healed with no doctor intervention. You would see it as a “coincidence” I would assume, but I believe and she did as well it was God.
Steve, I completely understand the concern of “God told me” language, but if our only source of hearing from God is Scripture, how is that a relationship? I know we need to be careful, but do you not believe in nudgings, etc that are from the Holy Spirit?
@@ndrudyjr Thanks so much for writing, and I do believe that our only source of hearing from God is Scripture. Everything else is highly subjective and easily mistaken for the voice of God. Scripture nowhere tells us to look for nudges from the Holy Spirit. God speaks to us through His Word, and we speak to Him in prayer, and that’s a very wonderful relationship. - Steve
@@groundedwithstevehartland I appreciate your response. Steve, I don’t want to press the issue too much, but I do have two follow up questions based on your reply. 1. There have been millions of people since Christ that have not had access to the Bible either in written form or via oral tradition. A simple example would be the American slaves. So for the slaves that were believers, did they only have a one-way relationship? 2. As a cessationist and also someone who doesn’t believe that the Holy Spirit guides us through intuition, etc., isn’t the Holy Spirit far more expendable in your theology than the Bible? And if this is so (I don’t see how it can’t be so), are you not elevating Scripture above its author?
Hey there @@ndrudyjr 1 - Re: millions of people since Christ who've not had access to the Bible, and slaves brought to the US: a - The millions w/o access to truth from the Bible were lost in darkness. They can't be saved apart from verbal, proposition truth from the Word of God (Rom 10:14-15). b - Slaves brought to America (note: "man stealing" is a terrible sin against God and humans) weren't believers until they heard the gospel (from a bible or from a person or book, etc) and believed. They needed light from the Bible to be saved (Rom 10:14-15). 2 - Is the Holy Spirit expendable in my theology? Hardly! The Holy Spirit convicts, illuminates, regenerates, baptizes into the body of Christ, seals, fills, sanctifies, intercedes, comforts, empowers, bears fruit, gives gifts, and restrains (sin in the world). In short, it is the Holy Spirit who applies to the elect everything purchased by Christ for them. The Holy Spirit is indispensable, in my theology. Thanks for the interaction. Pastor Steve
