  • Batman is one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. It stands to reason that with that level of popularity, he's going to get his share of both great and terrible stories. CBR has compiled the list of the five best Batman comics and five worst Batman comics. I wanted to take a look through the list and see what my opinions were on the entries, offering feedback as a fan of the character. #Batman #comics #worstbatmanstories

    Bane has always been a genius in the simplicity of his ideas. “How to beat Batman?” Make him tired. “How to find out who he is?” Look at his jawline. so The way Tom kings story reads is that’s dc interfered and the fact that it got shortened doesn’t help banes plan is to contrived. “How to break Batman?” Give him happiness and then tear it away I think if bane was just responsible for giving Batman happiness and that Batman lost it all on his own. The idea being “How to break Batman?” Give him happiness. it’d be more impactful saying that Batman can’t have happiness that everything around him he touches dies. but at the end Batman beats bane proving bane wrong finding happiness

    Kevin Smith humor fits in a Kevin Smith movie. That's it. It wouldn't even fit in Deadpool. If Kevin Smith wrote Deadpool, he'd make Daniel Way's run on the character appear as another legendary Joe Kelly run.
    Kevin seems like he's a cool dude, love how he embraces his inner geek and isn't afraid to make the movie or write the comic he wants to, no matter how absolutely shitty it might turn out to be. But sometimes you just gotta call a turd a turd and his name on a comic book would be one big red flag of a turd for me.

    Morrison's run on Batman is the best I've ever read, it's criminally under appreciated, with outsanding new viallians. Dr.Deadalus, weaponising alzheimers and trapping Batman in a web that's impossible to prepare for, Dr.Hurt, targetting Batman's mind, supernatural, sinister, mysterious and intriguing throughout, wildly entertaining and revitalised obscure villains like the mighty Lord Death Man, a rampaging grand theft auto player with all the cheats enabled brought to life, Proffesor Pyg and the Circus of Strange as a foil for Dick Grayson with his circus roots, continuing the symbiotic nature of the relationship between Batman and his foes. Light hearted Dick and badass Damian reversing and revitalising the classic Batman and Robin dynamic, Damian as both Robin and a dark future Batman. International "flavours" of Batman in Batman Inc, zurr en argh, Batman in different time periods, the whole thing was a masterfully crafted puzzle box of a story that kept readers engaged and analysing each issue every month. It is the most compressive multi faceted depiction of the character ever, calling back to all aspects of his past, Batman escapes death every time, which is the core of the character, even from Gods like Darkseid.

    I remember reading this issue as a kid I loved how the Spectre
    grew giant and held batman in his hand he could completely envelope and overpower Batman if he so desired.
    Batman is the main hero but he is still helpless and weak against the Spectre. Batman also said "Your power to crush me I respect and even fear"
    I liked The Spectre's power also Batman is weak and helpless in his hand in a whim he can crush him and end his future only by using his fingers that are around Batman
    He defeated Batman easily and eventually succeeded in his goal in the end.

    The best part of Dark Knight Strikes Again was Plastic Man looking at Elongated Man and saying "You're not even funny." Also, there was almost 20 years between The Dark Knight Returns and the Batman TV series. The Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams Batman had already distanced the comics character from that. I'm not that big a fan of Knightfall because, for me, it was kind of the same story as Batman 400, where Batman's enemies had all been released from Arkham. Finally, I was starting to enjoy All-Star Batman and Robin by the time it got to Black Canary and Batgirl.
    Top 5 Batman Stories:
    1. Batman Year One
    2. The Dark Knight Returns
    3. The Laughing Fish/Sign of the Joker
    4. The Case of the Honest Crook
    5. The Giant Gorilla Crime Boss of Gotham City
    Bottom 5 Batman Stories:
    1. Conspiracy (Another Doug Moench "Look what books I'm reading" story and a waste of J.H. Williams' art.)
    2. The Dark Knight Strikes Again
    3. The Mud Pack (Ignores that Basil Karlo had been killed off years earlier and never explains why Looker doesn't look like plain Emily.)
    4. Invitation to a Murder (David V. Reed's first Batman story, which can't be bothered to explain how the invitations end up on Gordon's desk.)
    5. The first two Mike W. Barr/Alan Davis Detective Comics issues, where Joker brainwashes Catwoman into becoming a criminal again.

    It’s a shame Killing Joke didn’t make it on the list. It gave us an origin story for the Joker, tho it may not be 100% canon, and it gave the iconic Joker line of everything changing due to “One Bad Day.” Not to mention the story bringing us Oracle and the amazing open ending. (that sadly got written out of canon because Batman never kills)

    Under the Red Hood is most definitely not better than Hush, Court of Owls, Killing Joke, or even Year One in my opinion. Under the Red Hood is important but the title of the article is best. I like Under the Red Hood but it gets really confusing especially if you don’t have much knowledge of DC outside of Batman. I think Under the Red Hood is one of those rare cases where the movie’s better.

    In regards to the Frank Miller vs Tom King thing, it’s like Spider-Man 3 vs The Amazing Spider-Man 1. I think TAS is ok at best, Spider-Man 3 is really not a well made movie on any level. Now I’ve watched Spider-Man 3 way more because it’s a lot more entertaining, but I wouldn’t say that makes it a a better movie.

    This is such a by the numbers list that you see on every other website that's ever done this.
    Cacophony isn't really that bad, at least not as bad as Widening Gyre, but at least it's a fun read.
    I'm sorry but I can't defend All Star Batman and Robin. Characterization aside, the writing is just abhorrent. I'm pretty sure Miller wrote that script out of spite. The only moment I enjoyed out of that book was that savage moment with Green Lantern where he had everything painted yellow and then offered him lemonade lol other than that, I'm sorry but the book is just bad. Every character is unlikable, Batman isn't just a "douche" he's an unhinged and hateful psychopath that is not a hero in the slightest. I really don't see how he went from how he was in Year One, to such a completely different person, then to someone we're supposed to root for returning in TDKR. But, that that being said, I don't think the book was meant to be taken seriously. Like I said I'm pretty sure he wrote that book out of spite for something.
    There are a lot of lesser known gems that deserve their place on a list somewhere. As well as some bonafide stinkers that deserve their time in the lime light.

      Rick J-420 I love All Star Batman and Robin, it was bad, but I liked it, it was stupid and hilarious to me, it could’ve been good if they toned down Bruce’s doucheyness and made him more like the Jekyll and Hyde in Dark Knight Returns, having Bruce be suppressed and less human when he acts as Batman, his humanity only stopping him from killing, have Bruce still be the father figure he is in usual canon, it’s a topic that I can’t express in text

    Honestly, I love how you brought it up at the end, and in terms of Batman events/stories, The Killing Joke ABSOLUTELY should’ve been on this list. It not only is a notable Batman event, but also one of the biggest character pieces when talking about The Joker.
    My top 5 best Batman Stories list based on the public impact:
    1. The Dark Knight Returns
    2. The Killing Joke
    3. Under The Red Hood

      He does know how to write, but his style of character study in a very realistic and/or vulnerable way doesn't work for every character, or isn't what people want for certain characters.
      I think he would've worked better for a purely detective style Batman miniseries, Superman, Booster Gold, Plastic Man, Red Hood, John Stewart GL, Sinestro, Cassandra Cain, Cyborg, Lex Luthor, Mister Freeze, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Big Barda, etc. I don't think his style works with how characters like Batman and The Flash are perceived.

    • @JohnDoe-hk5ec
      @JohnDoe-hk5ec 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All I’m saying is going from new 52 joker who systematically tore apart the bat family’s trust, and tricked Batman into thinking he’s immortal to joker who picks bitchy fights with the riddler and gets annoyed he wasn’t invited to a wedding.... you can tell theres a serious quality drop. I think it’s just the tone. It doesn’t sit well with me. Also.... I didn’t need to see Bruce and the gang hanging around a Batman themed fast food restaurant. I dunno it seems like Tom is making these comics for much younger people.

    • @blackmanwithcomputer
      @blackmanwithcomputer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JohnDoe-hk5ec Actually that sounds like the Joker lol. Sometimes he's just fucking around, and is very much willing to kill for any slight, on a whim.
      As for the restaurant thing, it's really a meta kind of levity. Like I said, because of how people view Batman now (super serious 99.9% of the time), his style is not the best for that character. If it was Superman, Jason Todd, Booster Gold or Animal Man, you don't bring it up as an example of "bad writing". It wasn't, but it did clash with our perceptions of Batman in a distracting way.
      Blame the editors for putting him on Batman and Wally West, rather than characters actually suited for his style. It's really these editors fucking up Marvel and DC.

    I disagree with about everything on the DKR one. One I don’t think it’s that good, damn I actually don’t think it’s good at all personally, here go fascist Batman. But it’s not even responsible for bringing back Batman out of the camp era, he had been out of it for years when Miller wrote it, with between the 60’s Batman we got all the Ra’s Al Ghul original story, the Joker five way revenge, etc, all that Miller really did with it its make people realize there was more to Batman and make him more popular again because that was the collective image we had of the 60’s show. But the comic he had not been like that for decades by this point.
    Denis O’Neil deserve more recognition for bringing back Batman as a serious super hero, and not give the credit to Miller

    • @visionary1138
      @visionary1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      O'Neils Batman started him down that road but still had a foot in the camp door. Miller and even Moore's versions of Batman really didn't at that time with DKR and Killing Joke. Also the fascism argument is overdone. Every superhero is a fascist if you really want to define them that 2 dimensional way, since they all use violence to fight opposition. Doesn't make sense to just throw that at the Miller Batman only. He even pokes fun at the argument in the book because it's just that: laughable.

Batman's reason for being Batman is to stop other children from suffering like he did and this story is trying to tell me that he made a kid eat rats. Batman without empathy doesn't feel like Batman, it feels like someone did a zach snyder and hurt the story by trying to make it overly edgy and dark

I specified the batman who laughs because it does what rocksteady tries to do in Arkham knight perfectly. And it shows the consequences of what would’ve happened if batman lost that mental fight. I've always felt _The Dark Knight Returns_ is overrated, though I read it thirteen years after its release, so it could probably never live upto its legendary status. _Year One_ is far superior to me.
    Meanwhile, _All-Star_ is truly _that_ bad. Looking back now you can laugh at it, but back in the day I despised it as soon as Batman slapped Dick across the face.
    Finally, the main problem with _Under the Hood_ ? The fact it exists. More often than not, I'm against iconic deaths being undone, and for decades the phrase was, "Everyone in comics except Jason Todd and Bucky returns". Jason's death particularly was a pivotal moment in Batman's mythology, and I can't help but have a bad taste in my mouth about his resurrection (not to mention Bucky's).

      How? The mystery is predictable and Hush as a character isn’t even that fleshed out or compelling. Heart of Hush was the comic that actually gave him a good backstory.
      Characters like Poison Ivy and Huntress aren’t characterized super well, and Harold Alnut was brought back after years of absence just to be unceremoniously killed off.
      It’s not a bad story by any means, but to me it’s not one of Batman’s best.
