Now it’s the country’s seventh largest metropolitan area and boasts a diverse population, including a burgeoning Muslim community. To cater to some of that diversity, there’s a store that sells all things Islamic. Ariadne Budianto reports.

Since my conversions to Islam just a few years ago, I have found myself to be in a constant & big struggle in finding the proper clothing at an affordable price. I live near Baton Rouge Louisiana, and although the number of Muslims in the community is growing, there is still no accommodating stores for us here, unless you count the one halal restraunt in the area "Halal Brothers". . . There are simply just no clothing stores for us Sisters here. There is one store in our mall called "Macys" that has just started a new Muslim clothing line for women; but to be honest, it is more "western fashion" than anything. I have found nothing appropriate yet. Plus, what they do sell there is extremely high in price. A simple dress costing $200! And it's really not proper fitting anyways. And to make matters even more difficult, I am a niqabi girl. So there is literally nothing here as far as clothing for me. Infact, I can not even find scarves here that can be worn as hijab/niqab. Everything I wear has to be purchased online & shipped to my home, & it is rather expensive & I can not afford it honestly. Infact, I only own 3 outfits that I can wear in public. It is so difficult for Muslim Sisters here who are on a strict budget. . . I have been wanting & dreaming to open up my own store here for Islamic items & needs. But as I said, I am on a strict budget, & because of my niqab, I have not been able to find a job in over one year! I even have gone as far as to offer to remove my niqab while working & only wear the hijab, but still, I can not seem to find work. . . May Allah make things to be easier for us living in places that do not have good accommodations for Muslims. And may Allah bless this store in Philadelphia. Ameen

I am Christian, I have a Jewish neighbor and also have a Buddhist neighbor we all been living next to each other last 20 to 30 years. Are you really kidding me? Philadelphia had a vibrant sunni Muslim community in the 1970s, that was self sufficient with hoagie shops that sold fish, steaks, bean pies, bean soup, the now renowned carrot cake invented by American Muslims, and wholesome food. Back then American Muslim women had to know how to sew to make their own garments and hijab. Sisters were shopping in fabric stores and making the "hook ups" ( beautiful flowing long skirts with matching scarves). Sisters would make new outfits for their children to make sure they had modest dress. This was before the immigrant Muslims increased in number. Sad how all this history had been dismissed and forgotten.
