    Melanoma survivor here! I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s in California. Sunscreen wasn’t really a thing that was known or easily available. I began faithful sunscreen application in the 90’s but unfortunately the damage was done. Thankfully UCSF and my team of excellent doctors removed the melanoma and were able to perform an amazing rotational flap to put my face back together. Affordable and effective sunscreen is sometimes difficult to find. I always feel like lip SPF leaves an odd taste in my mouth. I apply anyway but I would love to find an affordable SPF 50 lip product that doesn’t taste horrible. I love Jane products so maybe I’ll try it. Keep us posted on affordable and fabulous sunscreens 💜

      Thank you does sharing your story! It’s so, so important that we get people to understand how common skin cancer is.
      I’m Australian, and I don’t know a single adult over 30 who hasn’t had at least one mole removed- I’ve had two removed (both non cancerous, but better to be safe than sorry). My best friend had to have two pre cancerous moles cut out of her forehead just last year- she’s 34. Yet even here, where we have the highest UV and the highest skin cancer rate in the world, people still don’t take it seriously. My dad refuses to wear sunscreen, and seems to take pride in it? I sent my daughter off with him for a day our and spent a lot of time making sure he’d get my daughter to reapply her SPF50+ every two hours. Which he did, though he didn’t put any on himself. But my daughter has very pale, almost porcelain skin, whereas my dad and I have a very Mediterranean complexion- a type 4 which very rarely burns, and is naturally very olive toned. But still, I wear SPF50+ every day, and he should too. He has a lot of moles, and even though he’s got a higher Fitzgerald skin type, those moles make him a higher risk (and he’s already had a few removed)
      It just frustrates me so much that even in the skin cancer/UV capital of the world, so many people don’t take sun safety seriously. We tend to be better when it comes to kids (schools and daycares provide sunscreen for free to all children, and they all have no hat, no play rules), but so many adults just don’t seem to care. Though on the plus side, tanning beds are completely illegal where I live.

      @@katherinemorelle7115 I think it’s even more difficult for the older generation to regularly use sunscreen. Vintage sunscreens were smelly, burned and left your skin feeling gross. There’s such great options now compared to pre-1990’s. Maybe left him try a great sunscreen when you’re out in the sun together next time. Or just Google Melanoma and a rotational flap surgical pics and share them. It’s seriously no joke. Anything suspicious should be checked by a dermatologist. I had a hole the size of a tennis ball 🎾 on my left cheek. I literally had to have the left side of my face removed down to my neck and rotated to cover the space where the melanoma was. If the cancer was anywhere other than my face, they would have excised 3 times more skin to clear the margins. As you probably know, if not caught soon enough you will have 5 or less years to live. There’s no real treatment. No chemotherapy or radiation, only immunotherapy. Sometimes doctors will desperately try to treat it with conventional chemo and radiation but it just doesn’t work. I’m almost 48 and thankful for every day I have with my children.

      I use spf lipstick and I think its ok to protect yourself but I think viewing the sun as something absolutely destructive is wrong.
      I am not saying dont use spf I use it a lot as I am a red hair.
      But the sun plays a.huge roll in hormonal balance, serotonine production, good sleep, killing bacteria, keeping your pineal gland functioning well and a lot of other things.
      Skin cancer is not only caused by sunlight.
      I think its little bit psicologically unhealthy too, to think that what literally gives you life and makes this world exist is destroying you, I don't wanna be constantly worried about the light.
      Again I agree with using spf. But that radical view its too much.
      Things that are too far.away from nature will never make you look your best.
      I dnt have wrinkles or lines on my lips and I didnt always use spf.

      I prefer the Ego SunSense SPF50+ balm. Mostly because I don’t bother with anything below a 50+. But it’s also really lovely, very moisturising (with a Shea butter base), has excellent chemical filters, is fragrance and flavour free (it’s completely tasteless), and doesn’t leave a white cast (even on my lips with hyperpigmentation, and they show even the smallest white cast). It’s also very affordable ($8) and accessible, available at every pharmacy in the country (if they aren’t sold out). Pretty sure it’s the most popular lip sunscreen here. But you can’t go wrong with Ego generally, I find.

    Hi cassandra, my story is similar to cindy's. I was a "child of the 60's" and, because of problems with acne, low self esteem and the fact that sun somehow kept my skin clear, i was a sun worshiper --- and, because it was the 60s, the idea that sun could cause cancer wasn't talked about that much. fast forward to the land of great regrets. having just had a biopsy performed i my lips and now waiting anxiously for the results, i can say from experience, DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE NEED FOR MINERAL SUNSCREEN ON THE LIPS AND FACE!! i say mineral because, you are what you eat and, if you are trying to protect yourself from deadly chemicals and things that can cause cancer, why in all that is good and holy someone would want to apply a chemical sunscreen is beyond me (other than to avoid the white cast). i would just like to thank you for your review and hope you do more reviews like this one with an emphasis on mineral sunscreens that are not only good for our health but good for our coral reefs. i don't know that people realized that chemical sunscreens not only take longer to work but are killer for our ocean . in general, they just aren't the best.

    If you’re an Aussie (or just love Australian SPF products, which you should, we have excellent SPF products here for obvious reasons), the best and cheapest is the Ego Sunsense SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum (all high SPFs here are broad spectrum) lip balm. It’s also only $8. In Australia, where everything except for sunscreen is more expensive (seriously, I see the prices of sunscreen in the US and my jaw drops, and our cost of living is usually at least double!)
    Also Dr Dray approved- it’s one of her overall favourites. And it’s great- very moisturising, fragrance free, no white cast, has vitamin E in it too, and did I mention it’s cheap? Definitely the way to go if you have access to it.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I was shocked when I learned that in the US, daycares and schools don’t put sunscreen (usually kept in massive 2kg pump bottles that cost only $5-$10) on all children as a matter of course. In fact, kids need to have a doctor’s note excusing them (if they’re allergic to a sunscreen, in which case, usually the parents send their own). Also, ALL schools have no hat, no play rules on the schoolyard. We have uniforms, but even on free dress days, there are rules about all shirts having to have proper sleeves (no bared shoulders, and it’s not for a sexist reason, which is nice).
      Australia has the highest UV in the world, so our sunscreens are cheap, but must be of very high quality, and especially when it comes to kids, we take sun safety very seriously (or at least, we have from my generation onward). I still remember the Slip, Slop, Slap jingle from my childhood (look it up, it’s a banger). You slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. They have a couple extra ones these days (for shade and sunnies), but they don’t fit into the jingle as well.
      So learning that some schools in America require a doctor’s note FOR sunscreen, as opposed to an opt out system, kinda blew my mind- as did the fact that it isn’t provided for free to all children. And how expensive sunscreen is in the States. Like I said- we can get litres of the stuff for under $10, schools are given sunscreen for free, and it’s of much higher quality (with newer and better chemical filters) than what you can get in the US. I will say that our sunscreen formulations tend to not be quite as elegant as those of Asian markets. They’re usually thicker, greasier, not as nice on the face. But they’re developed for spending a day at the beach in the broiling Australian sun- they’re workhorses, not so much fancy racehorses.
      That being said, the SunSense lip balm is very elegant, it feels lovely on the lips, has no taste or smell, is very moisturising, very protective, and doesn’t leave a cast (even with my darker lip colour). I have hyperpigmentation around the edges of my lips, so any white cast is noticeable on me. This is excellent stuff!

    There are so many great spf lip products that are inexpensive. The Revlon Kiss has an spf 30 that is beautiful. Softlips has an spf of 20. Lipsmackers Kiss Therapy Strawberry has an spf 30. Sun bum has some that exceed spf 30. There are many out there if you look. The reason I know this is I just recently bought a ton of sunscreen products for my family who are now in Miami on vacation. I didn't want to send any lip spf products down that weren't atleast spf 20. Most of them were spf 30 and up.

      Idk if Im remembering correctly but I heared that lip spf is more safe since you might ingest it and its a dedicated lip product, which has to be formulated with that in mind... Im not sure though!!
      For what I can say for sure is that the lip spf i tried (mostly from yesstyle) usually dont taste as funny as normal sunscreen lol so its definetly worth it, and not as drying as face spf can be sometimes on the lip

      It’s fine for early in the day but since we eat with our lips and unconsciously lick our lips it’s very easy for most of it to be removed within a couple hours. This is why lip balms and lipsticks are EXTRA THICK and emollient- so it’s not easy to eat/lick it off

      @YFL.111 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do this and it works for me. The thing is, maybe its a little toxic if you eat or drink. I mean sometimes I drink water amd it tastes.a.bit like spf which is not great.
      Also make sure its water resistant.

    I like the Jane iredale Lip Drink, but it's a low SPF. I'm currently using one that I bought at a drugstore with SPF 50, Lavozon. Don't know if you have it in the US. It was cheap (converted to 7USD). One thing I noticed with every SPF product for my lips is that it dries out my lips. You won't notice it instantly, but after several months of consistent use, applying it several times a day, it will come back and bite you in the...but this one performed the best so far! Also, no white cast on my lips or anything, it's clear.

    The lip 'balm' I use is from the Hempz cbd line, with the blue packaging. It looks more like a lip gloss, but it has spf 15 in it, feels really nice, and there's a lot of product in it. $15 as well, which isn't terrible. Applying it is super easy, and it doesn't feel sticky. It really helps with my dry lips

    I recently got Rohto Mentholatum Melty Cream Lip SPF 25/PA+++. It goes on clear, has no white cast, and doesn’t have any weird taste. Unfortunately it’s not vegan. I’d suggest looking at Japanese lip SPFs for affordable options that really perform.

      @katherinemorelle7115 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either that, or Australian lip SPFs. Anything by Ego is fantastic, but I love their SunSense SPF50+ lip balm. It’s completely tasteless and odourless, very moisturising, has excellent chemical filters, no white cast, and is affordable ($8 a tube).
      I personally don’t bother with anything less than a 50+, because Australian sun. And I find there are quite a few really good 50+ lip balms on the market here.

    Fordyce spots… other than slicing or chemical burns… what can we do?
    Most people get them as we age, which is one of the reasons lipstick was invented: to counteract lips losing vibrancy, going blue, Fordyce profiliration, thinning & deplumping, cracking & flaking…

    Can you do a video on hydrator/moisturizers for peeling lips? My lips aren't burned, it's a condition I've had since i could remember (im in my lower 30s).
    My bottom lip has always peeled. I've tried constant lip balm (any cheap to more expensive brands; blistex, aquapher, carmex, burts bees etc), that never seemed to work or make my lips dryer after it wears off.
    I have a hard time with not picking though i am much better now than before. They would bleed if i peeled too much. Even if they didnt bleed, the new skin would hardened and eventually crack/split and start peeling. If I didnt pick, I'd have dead skin hanging off my lip. People definitely notice it.
    My upper lip is a normal soft lip skin. So i have an idea of what my bottom lip would be like if it was healthy.
    Thank you for your amazing videos and I think I am seeing results in my skin (I have been an acne sufferer for over 20 years, it has controlled my life), I've changed my diet and am using better products, I am now working on my mental self.
    Thankful - Sarah
    Edit: Unfortunately I can't afford to go to a dermatologist atm. When I had good insurance, I went to the dermatologist for years (from like 13 to 26 years old) for my acne, of course nothing ever worked and sometimes made my skin badly irritated, and all the wasted $$$.

    I adoreeeee the Fresh Sugar Balms (both tinted and clear). They're real 4-in-1 formulas that provide your lips with everything they need. They protect my lips in our VERY cold, dry, chapping Canadian winters. Nice, not overpowering scent.
    But it's friggin' $32 CAD!!! For a single tube that does NOT last. And it's only SPF 15, I believe. Cheesus. I need to find a better 4-in-1 - and a 3-in-1 for night usage - that ISN'T outrageously priced. 😣 And by 4-in-1, I mean a formula with occlusives, emollients, humectants (and preferably some water of some kind), AND SPF! I just feel so stupid, paying $32 for a glorified chapstick.
    It's so hard to find good lip products, at all. Never mind ones also including SPF. It's ridic.
