I remember him talking about this performance in lessons. He was very proud of having the opportunity. Amazing to finally see and hear what he was talking about those many years ago! Bravo Mr. Ashby!
@@wtxia dear Mr.Wu, the concerto was on Christmas Day Dec. 1989. “Ode to Freedom”. we have play Mahler 3 together. Bravo fur your Playing! Greeting from trossingen.
Jerome was one of a kind.I was fortunate to call him one of my really good friends from days in Mexico.Winning his position at age 23 was not a fluke . While in Mexico he would arrive eveyday at 6:30 AM for every 8;30 rehearsal. After he won the position he loved to come back to Mexico and hang out with his old friends. Never any airs,:Always the same warm wonderful person.Everyone who knew him misses him. Thanks for the download and celebrating an extraordinary player and human being.
Thank you for the extended footage too after the solo. Many Jerome Ashby stories and I too was fortunate to have met him. He was a very kindly person. Quite beautifully done. RIP
Playing that solo at so slow a tempo--LB's in the heavy profundity of his final years-- is a truly amazing feat. And the balances certainly didn't do him any favors either.
Without Beethoven and his great performer and splendid conductor , the classical music world will be like a vapid beer and would have been very lonely and insipid

True
R.I.P Mr Ashby. Got to say I feel immensely fortunate to have had the pleasure of meeting such a wonderful horn player and human being.

What an amazing tone!
Träumen Sie?
what a legend!
Nice job.....great to hear this played by a fourth horn. Kudos to Jerome and Lenny!!!
I love Bernstein so much!
sounds more like a bloody clarinet solo... poor Jerome, but he did a stunning job!
Sie sind offenbar den Wiener Klang gewöhnt zu hören. An der Phrasierung hätte ich einiges auszusetzen.

Yeah, holy schnikies that tempo sucks balls…
Maravilloso!!! Bravo Maestro 👏👏👏
An incredible video of Jerome Ashby. Hard to find any videos of his playing. This is very special. Where do you find all of these!??
TH-cam
did he play the 4th horn? Or did he play the 4th part only in the 9th symphony?

Fantastico!!👍😃😃😃
Sublime music.
RIP Mr. Ashby. I'm sure you now play in God's own quartet.
The most beautiful from 2:04 to 4:03

it is a lovely sound, but unfortunately the sound engineer was having a bad day, clarinet sounds like its 4m long.
Is he still playing 2/3 embouchure, it seems different from other players?
It's 1/2 or 50/50.
I rarely see a black male playing French horn
Jeff Scott
I am one ✌🏽
Is it V8D or hoyer 6802 or else?
At least it cannot be V8D as the model was released after 2000s.
I can't say for sure, but this horn is most likely an Elkhart era 8d
Los vientos demasiados brillantes y vacíos, los pizz muy desmedidos, para ser, Bern lo veo demasiado extraño.
Al solo, normalito.
Wow they’re drowning him out so much it’s awful.
that is an old recording...
