Great video Nick, your production is really coming together in this series! Excellent points on isolating and chunking and good habits to form early on. I fell into a bit of a trap at first when I learned a certain riff or part of a song that I could play reasonably well, so I would only practice those sections. To an extent, I still do that when I'm warming up because it feels good to have a couple of go-to riffs or melodies that I know I can play though. But, I force myself in my drills to focus on chord changes that are giving me trouble - there are plenty to choose from!! I might also look for a song that will introduce new chord changes for me so it forces me to practice them. Breaking a song down into components, intro, verse, bridge, chorus etc and then connecting them is a great method to learn and how I usually approach a new song.
Thanks for the feedback James! This topic is one I struggle with a lot. It's hard to find balance here. It goes both ways. Only playing the things you're already good at halts progress but on the other hand all work and no play just gets boring! Gotta work on new things but also enjoy the journey!
