It's like we're passing by and seeing not a woman mourning her husband found dead but some lady getting worked up over some stray that drowned in the drainage. It very much says more with so little. She can claim it's her husband lest she had a way of proving wolfmen real. She can't even claim its her dog lest she explains the lack of tags or why she never had it in her house before as far as neighbors know.
This scene right here is probably why Hana wanted her kids to choose between living as people or as wolves. The Wolfman straddled the line between both worlds, but hunting within the confines of the city is what lead to his death. Still kinda sad that Ame and Yuki don't seem to have that balance.
After Ame falls into the water, almost drowns, and is rescued by Yuki, he asks his mom "why are you crying?" while she was almost certainly reliving this moment.
TLDR: The lack of music in this scene really highlights how alone and sad Hana is. What always kills me is that, unlike any other movie or anime, there's no MUSIC in this scene. Usually, an important or very impactful death is accompanied by some form of incidental music that makes the viewers feel even more sad or nostalgic or SOMETHING. But the wolfman's death is mysterious and we don't really know what happened. The view of his dead wolf body made her, and us, deaf to even the rain. There's no music to bring tears. There's only shock and the inability to comprehend the death of her husband. To be fair, I don't even know what kind of music would accompany his death, because, like I said, the music makes you feel even more of something. We don't even know his name. But I'm sure Hana did. SHE knew way more about him than we do. And I don't know about you guys, but I didn't really cry at this scene until I really started thinking about their relationship and the fact that no one can really know about it. When I thought about it more, the reason why we probably didn't get any music to make us cry is because, just like in this scene, HANA is feeling way more grief and sadness than ANYONE that witnessed his body be dragged and hurled into the dump truck. And, this statement is bold and hurts even me when I say it, she is actually the only one here with the right to cry over this.
To make matters worse, she can't even tell people the truth. She can't tell anyone that this wolf is her husband, and father to her kids... she's completely.... alone.
0:37 That's gotta be called a reverse jump-scare or something. The sudden silence was just as effective as a sudden loud sound. The first time I watched this I didn't jump but I tensed up with my heart in my throat...
The whole sound of just rain is perfect. It's symbolizing a impacted memory. You see the other people's faces are blank because that isn't something she cares about in that moment, all she cares about is her husband/lover. So going forward when Ame tells his mother he wants to go live in the forest because the fox is dying. She almost tells him he is not a wolf but stops herself. And the rain fall gets louder for that moment while they are silent. Because she suddenly remembers this day. She was afraid Ame would end up the same way.
She not only saw her husband dead lying in a ditch, she also watched his body get thrown into and crushed by the garbage truck. She wasn't able to explain to anyone the situation and so was forced to live in silence and mourn.
You know, when I saw this scene, this is the most realistic death I ever seen. You know why, because his eyes are opened and dilated. When you’re dead your eyes are opened and dilated. I seen so many anime with there eyes closed or they are just open but they are blank.
I watched this with my son expecting to watch a cartoon and it broke me. My husband was an addict and it was like watching my life of raising my 4 wild boys by myself.
This opening to this movie I equate a lot to another film - Up. You see a couple fall in love and build a life together in such a short space of time and it is so deep and impacting as a result. When they are eventually are torn apart, you feel their loss and suffering.
I don't know why but the wolfman's death really hit me hard. You know he has been living his life like wolf and moves to the city alone by himself to get a job. When he had a job, he never thought he would have his own family because he scared that he might make others scared of his wolf form. Then he met Hana, who loves him sincerely. They had a happy life with two children. But it's such a pity that he only get to experience that beautiful and happy moments only for a short time. I just want him to have a happy moments in his life with people he loves. 😭😭😭😭

I couldn't do it. I cried my eyes out, knowing if I were in her shoes, this kind of traumatic pain it would be almost literally impossible. Ookami was such a loving husband and father too, this hurts. She lost so much that day but she stood strong so she could raise their babies and make him proud. She's so selfless. Literally a model mother.

This makes me think of a story on FanFiction that's being written called "Hana & Ookami: Roles Switched." It tells the movie, but switches Hana and Ookami's roles ... so, it would be Hana who died and Ookami who was left to raise Yuki and Ame on his own. Thinking of that story and watching this scene again ... it just makes the whole thought of their roles being switched even MORE emotional.

There's actually a story on FanFiction called "Hana & Ookami: Roles Switched." It's still in the process of being written, but it tells the whole movie with Hana being the one who dies and Ookami being the one who raises Yuki and Ame. It shows the how different Ame and Yuki would grow to be if they had been raised by their father instead of their mother. I highly recommend it!
No music in this scene amplifies it even more. There's shows/movies that use utter silence to convey something sad, or something frightening or messed up. Not a lot of said shows/movies do this, but still. And the fact that we didn't get to know a lot about Hana's husband, at first makes this scene only shocking, and we're sad for Hana, but she, his wife, knew more about him through the montage of them being together and then having their kids, it makes you tear up more if you think deep about it.
It looked like they were sleeping all while Hana was searching. Which honestly makes it worse since they were peacefully slumbering with no clue that they just lost their father.

This can be confirmed by the part of the movie where Yuki, as a child, becomes a wolf in front of some of Hana's neighbors as they come to visit. They tell Hana that they didn't know that she had a dog, right before Mrs. Nagasaki (the female neighbor) said that it looked similar to a wolf. Then, her husband tells her, "There's no way that's a wolf! They're extinct in Japan. That's a German Shepard mixed with another breed!" So, by having Ookami seen, he was probably assumed to be a large husky or also a German Shepard that's mixed with another breed.

They stemmed from wolves and some dogs still look A LOT like wolves. Huskies, German Shepards, Dingos ... and these are just a few of the breeds that look awfully similar to wolves.
I watched this movie around 2 years ago. I didn’t remember this scene, of course I knew he died but not like this. I can’t quite remember if I was sad or not. So my father passed away a week ago and watching this again, my heart feels so heavy. I planned to watch this with my sister, but I don’t know if I could bring her through that pain.

He didn’t kill himself he was trying to get more food for his family but he accidentally lost his grip by accident caused him to fail he was trying to get more meat for her to make dinner so when she saw the bags did she put the pieces together that he was trying to hunt for more meat to provide his family
