- March is an exciting time in the gardening calendar, especially if you're keen on growing your own vegetables in the UK. However, if you delay much longer, you might find it challenging to achieve a bountiful harvest from certain plants this year. In this video, I'll guide you through the essential steps for sowing and planting three easy to grow seeds right now to ensure bumper crops.

@@veggieplot I've drawn up my plots in the growing space pages but not sure I've done it right, but there's probably not a wrong way to do it.
And I caught the sun yesterday! It's been a perfect bank holiday weekend, getting mucky in soil and talking to worms 😂

I've not sown any of my free seedsyet- waiting for the 15th but I was really amazed at how lovely your book and seeds were. The idea of just planting the little card looks great fun and I cant wait to try out all the different varieties. I sowed mine 15 days ago with a heat mat, there up and later this week I'm going to pot them up cause they are in tiny cells, I sowed your top 4 from last year + 3 more New ones and UP to now my all time favorite Tomande. Thanks for the video

I grown cherry falls before only stopped because it's F1, it was a heavy cropper but also found that once finished you can cut it back and get a second flush not as many but still more.
Cheers Ady, and thanks for the tip about Cherry Falls, I would never have thought to try that. I know what you mean about F1. I bought the seeds on a whim thinking my mum could cope with them in pots by the back door. I imagine they’re quite manageable.
@@veggieplot They are, I made the mistake of burying it deep when potting on into final pot which caused a lot of splitting on the branches so from now on I plant tumblers at the same level.

I haven't sown any of my tomatoes yet, we get frost until May and I'm away for a week in April so don't want to leave big plants. I've taken them on holiday with me before now as we usually rent a cottage.😊
I would start soon as I made the mistake last year of sowing last week in March because of going away first week in April! Never again! ☹️ nothing ripe until mid august with all the grey days we had in the wmids! 😞 best of luck!
Ah, the gardener's eternal problem, what to do with seedlings and plants when they go away. Very impressed with you taking them with you though, I'm not sure I'd get away with it 😂. How many did you take and is there a limit? Just thinking how many I can squeeze in the car 😂
@veggieplot I took about a dozen mixed peppers and tomatoes, luckily we rented a cottage so there was a large windowsill although the owner thought I was mad.
My last frost date is 1st to 10 th May, so will do my tomatoes soon

I'm doing 11 varieties this year, and the only cross over with your choices is Lucid Gem....which I purchased after your review last year.
Tim's Taste of Paradise replaced Sungold for me last year... great taste and no splitting. I would like to try the Honeycomb next year.
Lucid Gem is wonderful and I hope you like it as much as I do. I'll have to check out TTofP but Honeycomb is still the one to beat for me. If you can get seeds, it's definitely worth a try.
I’m doing 27 😂 but like you some are gifted to family. Mine are just a dream at the moment but I’m sure they will pop up soon enough. Here’s to a fabulous 2024 tomato 🍅 season. Yes I found sticks the size of my finger in an “expensive brand” compost. Demand is driving less quality because the suppliers can’t wait as long for it all to break down. @@veggieplot almost all outside and knock on my wooden head 😜 we have not had blight here at all and normally it’s too,hot for it in summer 🙏🙏🙏

Hi, I sowed my tomato seeds in January in a heated greenhouse. Now ready for planting out. 18 varieties in total, which includes those free from you. I got about 75% germination rate on those.
Hi Stewart, 75% 😕 which seeds didn't germinate? Your plants must be a good size by now. Mine have just started germinating.
@@veggieplot Hi, I got at least one of each, so will be able to try them out. I started mine in a heated propagator, then transferred to a grow tent. they are quite sturdy plants and between 7 & 9 inches tall. The greenhouse they will be planted out in to my other greenhouse as soon as i get a minimum heat sorted.

Did you mean summer of love rather than Alice’s? As captain lucky are quite different in appearance to Alice’s? CL are not antho (Internally certainly colourful!)
I saw a post on IG today of a Captain Lucky and it does look amazing. The flavour sounds exceptional too, so I'm really looking forward to it now.
Wow Chris I don't think I have heard of any of those tomato varieties! They do look interesting though. Since you grow so many plants What do you do with them at harvest?
I only grow about 5 or 6 plants and apart from eating them fresh and making chutneys at the end of season, I tend to mostly make homemade pasta sauce with the gluts as it freezes well. I guess as there is only me 5/6 plants is ample. I imagine you harvest on an industrial scale? 😉
I hadn’t until a few years ago, but it’s quite extraordinary how many weird and wonderful varieties there are. I think 5-6 is perfect for one person but I’m still feeding a grown up family of four, plus as you say, they freeze well and can be made into all manner of delicious sauces and meals. Are you tempted to try growing some of these?
@veggieplot Certainly the Ananas Noir... but I'm not sure if I have room for another plant. But I might have to rethink my plans! 😉

@@veggieplot Hi. I am growing the same tomatoes as last year because I like the varieties I have . I am trying tuberous parsley, just to see … kohlrabi too which I ‘ve never eaten before . Lots and lots of beetroots as they are good for blood pressure… can’t wait for better weather. ☺️

I sowed seeds in sifted miracle grow and it nearly killed them.👍
Sounds like a disaster Nick, did you figure out the reason why?
@@veggieplot it was the fertilizer in the compost, too much for seedlings, they germinated fine they started dropping, It was 2 years ago. Using homemade this year and everything is doing well.💪👌👍
