Allotment Gardening | UK | HUGE Cauliflowers!
มุมมอง 1.2K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
What a fantastic morning at the allotment! It's hard not to feel incredibly proud of what the garden has given us. We've got some beautiful, large cauliflower heads, yellow Soleil courgettes, and a huge pile of runner beans and peas! I also found a couple of plums and some rainbow chard with stunning rainbow stalks-just gorgeous. A few beetroots were also ready, perfect for roasting or pickling...

Harvesting Onions | Do Sets = Bigger Harvests?

Maybe! Harvesting in the UK is in full swing at the allotment, and the onion crop is ready to come out, be taken home dried and prepared for storing. This year's onion harvest is from sets sown in cells in the spring and planted out in the allotment garden. Thanks. Just ordered a couple of packets of your very reasonably priced variety packs. One little observation....if you are able to differentiate a bit more between the varieties that grow ok outdoors (as well as inside) that would be helpful for those of us without a polytunnel/greenhouse.

    I love your tomato tasting videos. I’ve been growing tomatoes successfully for many years but only tinkering on the edges with varieties. This year and probably going forward I’m diving in head first, who knew there were so many varieties!! Some of my selection are in your top 10 , like Alice’s dream and Cuban salami. I also have Rebel Kayleigh Ann, I think a relatively new one in the Star Wars series and Sophia’s Sweet Caramel to name a couple on my list to grow next year. Can’t wait to see what your choices to grow next year are. Love your seed packs btw.

    A great tomato review Chris! Everyone has been raving about Alice's Dream, so definitely on my list for next year. I also want to grow Mountain magic again and give it another go. I think the person who i bought the seeds from, didn't harvest them correctly so i had a cross pollinated one of something else. Yes definitely will be growing honeycomb again next year but not so many! We love our fav go to's of Money Maker and beefsteak marmande and also the one's my late step father in law managed to turn into an heirloom, i think for his paper. I also want to grow some determinates like Roma's in containers for a bit more of variety. Looking forward to seeing what you are going to be growing next year!

    I grew many of your top tomatoes and agree with Alice's Dream, Lucid Gem, really liked Captain Lucky too. Loved Ananas Noir, that's a keeper for me. Grew the Pink, Red, and Green Berkeley tie dye. I preferred the red and pink to the green and agree, I think the pink just pips the red. You have given me some ideas for next year, thanks. Please try Thorburns Terra-Cotta next year, what a find. Beautiful burnished copper colour, smokey, tangy flavour, lots of sizes and very prolific for me. I have saved so many seeds to give to friends 😊.

    Excellent! Always enjoy hearing your thoughts and opinions. Start Roloise was also a disappointment for me, but I will give it another go and putting it down to the poor weather this season, with lack of heat and sunshine. My surprise was Brads Atomic Grape and Rebel Starfighter, and loved them. Lucid Gem was consistently excellent, but my Alice’s Dream didn’t grow well. However, will defo grow next year. Your video has inspired me to try Cuban Salami, but was sold on trying the Amish Sherbet and therefore purchased the pack on your site. So thank you!

    This year I out of the lot I grew, 'Heaven's Joy' was absolutely delicious grilled with cheese on toast - described as having a juicy and sweet “full” tomato flavor. Cherry toms I loved were 'Consuelo (F1)' and 'Rapunzel (F1)'. 'Sweet Casaday' was quite a nice, sweet, elongated small tomato and very pretty too. I also really like the smokey flavour of 'Indigo Rose'. One I definitely wouldn't grow again was 'Ivory Tears', which was a freebie sent with a seed order I did, but it literally tasted so, so bland and quite grassy, even when fully ripe and over-ripe.

  • @Bexyboo88
    @Bexyboo88 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Aww that's such a cool idea to save the seeds to sell etc... I just wondered how you know if you'll get the same from the saved seed or is there a chance it could be a cross? I'd quite like to make up those little bags with saved seeds and the picture/info put in for my own collection (so it's neat) but also perhaps to have some to give away to friends / family.

    • @tahliel
      @tahliel 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Tomatoes generally self pollinate, and unless they have a protruding another, they tend to self pollinate before bugs come along and cross between plants. They can cross though, so putting a little exclusion bag over the flowers before they open can eliminate any chance of that happening.

      I don’t grow many plum tomatoes so I’m not sure I’m the person to ask. Although not plum tomatoes, the indigo cherry drops I grew this year have good flavour, are a small round tomato and quite prolific. I grew Brad’s Atomic Grape for a few years and it’s delicious when ripe but takes ages to get there in my climate. • @AlisonQuinsey
      @AlisonQuinsey 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@veggieplot Sorry not to reply sooner. Not used to commenting! Green grape has the best flavour of all the varieties that we grow which is about 24 different varieties. It originally came from the HDRA heritage seed library over 20 years ago and I save seed every year. This stated that it was best grown in a pot to prevent excess foliage and produce more fruit. I don't think that it is the most productive but the flavour bursts in the mouth. I am not an expert like you who can distinguish different flavours but my husband rates this as his favourite. We also grow Texas Wild and Estonian Yellow Mini Cherry which are prolific fruiters of small and very small tomatoes but tons of them. I have grown plants for local people who all like them. Not sure if this helps.
