I think its great how they made Zod, since from his perspective, all hes ever done is to protect his people from extinction. If only he'd used that terraformer unit on Mars though... they all would've survived in peace. That was the only point that didn't make sense.
They talk about habitable planets in the beginning of the movie. Meaning not all planets are habitable. Zod alks about outposts they visited. How all of them died. They needed a healthy planet. Earth was their first possible match, thanks to Clark turning on the beacon they found it.

Now, considering that even we think that humans can live on Mars with a little tweak, its not a strech to think that with that machine they could've turned it into a habitable planet for themselves. I mean just look at that mysteriously broken moon in MoS the fact that steppenwolf knows of kryptonians and quite possibly so did krypton know of apokolips. Even the kryptonian ship had knowledge of 100,000 worlds whose to say some of those worlds aren't the 100,000 worlds turned to dust by Darksied. I just think it be interesting if they had history pre dating superman. Only good DCEU movies in my opinion are Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, Shazam, Aqua Man, and Wonder Woman. BvS and Justice League are so terrible.
