Seeing Portnoy in this sort of setting, writing music with Derek and Bumblefoot and showing the process just like in his days with DT makes me happy. Can't wait to hear this record :D
This is freaking killer stuff! Every band should learn form this. It's a lesson on how to work intelligently and efficiently. Notice how lightly Mike is playing and he's using "rods", not sticks. He's just tapping and the rest of the band is playing at a low enough level that they can hear him when he's telling them what part comes next and what exactly to play.
@@carloc8763 You've very welcome. I just wish that in all my many years of playing, we could have worked like this. The drummer always pounded and the rest of the band played loud. Whenever we stopped to discuss a part, the guitarist would noodle aroun on his guitar, same as the bass player usually, the drummer would tap on his drums to tune them and the singer ALWAYS, ALWAYS had to yell into his microphone. Me being the kebourd player, just sat there in amazement wondering why nobody else could figure out why we never really got anything done and the band often sucked.
Indeed, not only his drumming skills, but his whole aproach to songwriting and envision of the final product, aside from the fact that the man is a music enciclopedia.
Absolutely agree. But on the other hand maybe that kind of leadership started bothering the others.. It's the same thing in all kind of business where you have more than one charismatic personality!
I love to watch all the behind the scenes stuff. Thank you guys for filming this stuff--hope it is bundled as a "making of" DVD in a package. Mike's organizational skills are awesome--not many people can pull off 6 bands, but this gives you an inkling into why he can. I cannot wait to get my MMXX in the mail on Jan 17. Woohoooo!
@@WyldestZakk1980 It doesn't have to be a DVD or Blueray -- can be a download or posted through their TH-cam Channel. Most of these extras are included with special bundles (ie. CD+DVD+Blue Ray+print art, etc) so it makes sense to include it as a nice bonus for the hardcore fans. :-)
Thanks for sharing this. Given the conversation I had with Ron at the camp on Athlone its a great insight into your creative process. Mike's an excellent conductor as well as musician 👍🤘🤘🤘👏
Mr. Thal, I've consulted with the magic 8-ball. I hear a slow, rising heavy creeping up from a haunting deep. A sound that is equal to the collision of atoms. The overwhelming gravity of doom.
The first half of the video sounded pretty good actually! And that was because the camera was kept at a distance from the drums. To your point, most camera mics aren't build to gracefully capture something as loud as drums. Not to mention, it has a range of frequencies (from bass to treble) all at the same time.
Its like listening to dream theater all over again but much much much better than the dT we have now... seeing this kind of writing process makes me soooo fucking happy its like we are back int era of TRAIN OF THOUGHT!
Why? He is just saying what is coming next to the song. He is doing the same fills over and over again. He doesnt upgrade anything of his drumming.... I hope he stay and Sons of apollo and never come back to DT
LOL its been almost a decade and these fools still beating a dead horse.. portnoy is never coming back to DT, and they make great music before and after he left regardless. mangini is great, portnoy is great.. no need to just hate everything DT since portnoy left. DT could release a 10/10 masterpiece and these portnoy fans would still say it sucks.
@@asabovesobelow2299 Not really, Portnoy plays some of the most memorable drum parts. No he isn't just saying what's coming next, he is a writer and composer along with Derek and Bumblefoot.
You know.... The whole song is all ready written, he just tell em whats coming next for the camera. You can notice that he look constanly to the camera, like "hey, watch me, Im in charge"
I assume the video was captured at a mature state of writing / arranging. Most probably the person who comes with a song idea will provide already a multitrack. This might be one of the differences to amateurs.
Mike to band: Hey...can you all scoot over a bit more...I need to fit 17 more drums and cymbals in here for rehearsal. Just a bit more...a little more...and perfect...you're all barely in frame.

Yeah, you can really tell how he's holding back to not be earsplittingly loud, makes for a much better writing atmosphere :)
6DOIT kit!! Its a beaut! That album is pure art.
Heck yes love these behind the scenes videos. More please
Love this behind the scenes stuff. A lot can be learned from this stuff. Keep it up.
This is how Mike Portnoy managed Dream Theater to become one of the best bands in the prog industy. He's irreplaceable.

Love seeing this behind the scenes stuff. I have a feeling that this album will be even better than the first.
I hope so. So far I'm not digging these new tunes as much.
It's like they know what they're doing or something. 😁 Cool peek behind scenes!👍👍
Really good stuff. Nice to see how lightly Mike can play with rods And of course Derek with only one keyboard is a nice alternative =)
Very interesting insight in the creation process of the great music of Sons Of Apollo. Looking forward to more stuff like this.
This is so SO joyful to see! Killer clip! So cool to get a sneak peak within the creative process. Thanks Mike for sharing such clips.
Unbelieveable, how quiet and soft Mr. Portnoy is able to play. A true master of his instrument.
I like it anyways. But thanks for your explanation.
I’d love to see more!

Cheers from Brazil! Keep going SOA!
New Sons!!!! Nice. Can’t wait for new album. Love it.
This is great. Portnoy is commanding the whole band like an instrument in itself. Great guys. This must be Portnoys house. Love this.

It left him in the dust
No matter what he found

Nice bass drums!!!
more this!!!! is epic
AMAZING!!! Thanks for releasing this!
Woowee... MP should always play soft like this, so perfect how he keps the energy flowing like this!!
The universe lack of this kind of video

This is incredible. Heavy with groove.
Awesome!!
I'm certain that part of MP inspiration is coming from the SDOIT drums. =)
