It is with great appreciation that I watched your Chalanaatta video. It is a super raga which has in it more famous raga like Nattai, Jog and Thilang. At least for me raga Savithri is not that popular. Chalanatta is not generally as popular as its Janya ragas . I remember having heard in my childhood days that the Geetam “amaree kabaree bhaara” can be sung in Chalanatta. But some documents say that it is a short geetam in Nattai.
The Chalanaatta raga should contain all such ragas which are mentioned above but should be very different too from them. You have brought in the parent raga standing entirely on its own without depending much on its more popular offspring ragas.
Kamboji and Bilahari seem to be more popular than Harikamboji. Am I correct?
The melakartharaga gamanashrama is the parent raga of Porvikalyani and Hamsanandi. No? They are believed to be more popular than their parent raga. Am I right?
If we replace Panchamam in Chalanatta with prathimadhyamam it will be very boring because of the Vivadi nature again, No? Is there a raga called chalanatta sree as per the scheme of Thanjavur S Kalianaraman?
Thank you for closely following this series. Savithra is not a very popular raga but since it has properties of Jog and Thilang, you might find it very familiar. The Geetham Amaree Kabaree is in Naatta, as far as I know. And you are right on the point on that Chalanaatta even though is a mix of Jog and thilang, it should sound different. About the Janya raga popularity, yes Kamboji is ore popular than Harikamboji. Poorvikalyani and hamsanandi are definitely more famous than Gamanashrama.
Chalanaatta itself is a vivaadi raga. Talking about M2 in Chalanaatta, i.e. Rasikapriya - it is also a beautiful raga (its all subjective, isn't it) to many but I like Chalanatta more than Rasikapriya may be due to M2 and not due to it being a Vivaadi. In TSK's 108 Mela scheme, the 108'th raga is called "Chalasree" .
