Caroline Myss - The Storyteller and the Gossip (The Power of Archetypes)

  • CORRECTION: In this video I mistakenly referred to Hedy Lamarr as a gossip columnist - when I meant to say Hedda Hopper.
    Hi, Everybody -
It's time for another archetype. This week, I'm combining two that relate to each other. We're going to start with the storyteller and then go to the gossip, which is like the shadow side of the storyteller.
But I want to begin with a fantastic quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, who said, "Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people." And that summarizes the difference between a great storyteller and a gossip and the width of the spectrum between them.
The great power of a storyteller is to take what you've gone through and use it as a launching pad into the theater of life itself. To understand the stories of others is the spiritual purpose of the storyteller.
For the gossip archetype, human information is social currency; It's their key to getting into social circles, being popular, and having something to say.
If you tend to gossip, break that pattern. The choice for all of us, no matter the archetype, is whether we are gracing something or withholding grace.
Okay, so the storyteller and the gossip, what a team.
    Thank you, everybody.
    Love,
    Caroline

I work in an office 95% women. We agreed that anything we say about a coworker, we are willing to say to her. Everything we say about each other is 100% POSITIVE! Hey, Macy! Jess says your project is brilliant! ❤️❤️❤️ We’re all happy and supported.

I was listening to music, thinking about this: we GIVE attention because we WANT attention - we WANT attention because we GIVE attention. Laughing at the obvious! Great writers love great readers. Great readers love great writers. Then this video popped on my feed. The Universe is blowing my mind these days.

I think you meant "Hedda Hopper" who was the gossip columnist. Hedy Lamarr was probably more of a Femme Fatale and Engineer archetype, but I'd be curious to hear your take on that :)

Thank you! I learnt to REALLY honour my life story as I practiced the 12 Steps by Alcoholics Anonymous. In particular, Steps Four and Five. The icing on the cake for me in life is to take other men through the steps and to hear their stories. "Our small stories become a vehicle for the larger stories, the greater truths about why we are here and what is our purpose." Peace be upon you.

Great comparison of storytelling versus gossip, Caroline. I am glad you did it, since nowadays, unfortunately, so much damage is being done to people through mindless, malicious gossip by small minds.

Every archetype has it's positive and negative attributes but...I believe that at the end, what matters is how we choose to use that energy in our lives and others. I simply love your storyteller archetype. Thank you and Blessings 🙌 ❤

I like to do what I call "White Gossip" - I make a point of passing on positive remarks and observations that will lift others up. I refuse to take other people's negative and destructive gossip on board, especially because it is usually unsupported by actual facts.
When I receive information - including eZines, articles, videos like this one, etc - I always pause to think about who else would find the information useful / helpful and pass it on.

Thank you, Caroline..I needed this, now!! I was a professional journalist for decades, & I think it fed into my need to feel "clued in", be listened to and feel important. I felt a great responsibility in transmitting correct and objective information, but I must admit, it made me cynical & judgmental. I was working in Manhattan on 9/11, and continued as a street reporter, for a few more years, then inside as an All-News anchor, during which, I developed the "media mind." Eeek You helped me in Energy Anatomy, Why People Don't Heal, and the list goes on and on..I love the way you weaved these two archetypes together. Stay well 🥰🤗💚

Wisdom and truth is what I hear from everyone of your lessons, Caroline. Thankful that you have been showing up these last few weeks, I've needed your wisdom, not that I don't have wisdom inside of me, but looking at my situation from your paradigm is fuller. I recently named my Spirit, "Pure Worth", because it deserves my respect, my love, and I want to be conscious of my words, actions and attitude. Gratitude takes on a whole new meaning. You've helped me for several years, along with a few others, who teach what I need to hear, not just what I want to hear. To be honest, truly honest with myself (Spirit) is not a cake walk, in fact I have to turn around a lot in order to be worthy of this life, gift I've been given. Again, thank you for making us responsible to tell a story honestly as we can, with love.❤️🙏😺🙏🌹🙏

This is just my opinion. I do believe that whatever story that one is telling, is really a story to oneself. And how the story is articulated depends on the lens (perspective) of the story teller (or gossiper). It’s like building on fire metaphor Caroline shared before. Someone on the left and another one the right of the building, both tells a different story based on what they each see. The truth is that the building is on fire. Whether it’s a good thing, a dramatic scene, a bad thing…like the guru story, nobody knows why the building is on fire. Therefore the guy on the left or right are both just telling “their truths” not necessary “the truth” as the truth is unknown to the seer.
When an event occur, by nature our mind goes into action for purpose of comprehension. One tells him/herself stories. Through this process, one gets to see his/her own lens ie perspective (whether +ve or -ve). Every story told is an opportunity to know oneself better. Like Charles Dickens’ story described in this video, is about his views which are influenced by his own experience. Readers only relates and we either like or do not like the stories told. I believe, when looking at the tabloids and gossips, it’s good to see our receptions to those stories. If we like all the malicious stories, we enjoy seeing others humiliated, criticized or punished in our relation to those kind of stories, it shows that we perhaps harvest some kind of anger or vengeance towards certain portfolio of people such as the rich or successful because we feel that there is injustice in our own lives. And the best story in this context is to see if we can change the stories within, to break the relation to those malicious or negative stories. If successful, we can become compassionate to the tabloid victims and gradually will no longer be addicted to negative and harming stories people sell us as their social currency. This is how the storyteller can use his/her gift to learn and grow. Those who look outside dreams. Those who look inside awakens. ✌️

Fantastic information that helps me further understand the weapon of gossip. It’s interesting that many years ago, I dreamt of Jesus talking to me. It is the only dream, in my recollection in which a Jesus figure has appeared or spoken. The only clear message I remember was regarding gossip, or speaking about others when they were not present. The lesson was clear. Do not do it. It’s incredibly harmful to every party, mostly and including myself. There was a tremendous amount of gossip going on at my place of work at the time. I learned how to quickly and easily walk away and keep my mouth shut. Don’t give that crap any energy.

a wise person once said helping a person, perceived as deserving, may interrupt their karma. choose wisely. the karmic narrative is key and only accessible by way of trust
in the larger cosmic reality of that person, and necessitates detachment of one's bias
in perception and understanding derived from that filter. the gossip(ers) has/have
followed me from a very, very young age. if history is any teacher much of the motive
is based in envy and jealousy. they find pleasure in my challenges instead of focusing

Carolyn Myss I love your work so much one time I listen to a tape of yours “Anatomy of the Spirit “ at least 100 times. However, I’d encourage you to reconsider only sharing the idea that Hedy Lamarr may have introduced gossip by listening to her story. I believe she was a misunderstood woman, and today she would’ve been far different I think gossip was used by her to protect herself when she came to Hollywood, perhaps that got out of hand she did invent a technology that might be behind all of our cell phones, and helped Howard Hughes to design a faster airplane. I don’t think many people care about that, but being a wannabe geek, she’s been one of my Heroes. I’m sorry that she may have disappointed the world in someway. th-cam.com/video/3QB_P8gvZ-c/w-d-xo.html

I'm sorry but the story of the murderer that was not saved from drawning to me makes not sense, how do you NOT know that if you would have save that person that was almost to loose their life., they might have almost experience the "horror" or death on himself in a a way that is not "natural" death but is caused by something exterior, altho obviously you bring it on yourself, might have not changed his mind or heart....?! to say, do not help anyone because they might be people that cause harm, dose not seam like a grate teaching at all. It is like an eye for an eye and this is not the teaching or CHRIST at all, dose not mean that we should be foolish and support peoples hurtful behavior but I once had that, a man with his head bent over a bench in the train, I could have signalized that to the train driver, they could have called an ambulance and seen if the man was doing good, might have been a druken person, might have been someone on drugs ecc. but the point was, I could have done something and still have decided not too, because in my head I also thought, someone else will, which probabbly did but why did I not do it? to be it was to not "bother" other people on the train, I was more afraid of people negative reaction because they had to get to work and stopping in the middle of the rail road would have blocked or delayed the trains and this is why but the shame that I felt for not having done it KNOWING I could have, man that was something I sometimes think about this day, I don't beat myself up for that but there is not excuse to what people might have done in the past that should stop anyone from caring and act nice or do whatever is needed, what if in that moment it was God acting throw me giving me guidance and I just decided to bypass it, what if that guy that toll the men in the story was also not his consciousness speaking to him, I fully understand not getting overly aggressive or desperate if not able to have help more in certain situations but it is NOT an excuse.

one more thing, in Austria that is even called "unterlassene Hilfeleistung", which means that if you had the mean and capacity to do something but you just watched and avoided it and you get called in as a witness and they find out that you did nothing, you actually can get a jail sentence for it

the snoop gets offended and feels she has found something out about you if you don't want to tell her all, and she snoops more.
YES, SHE! SHE concentrates on all statistics which have to do with your private area. That is why vulgar men call it a money maker. SHE is just as vulgar though it is long, and played out and covert.

Perhaps inappropriate and machiavellian, I will find the gossip and feed them misinformation. It is a credibility thing.

Then what is Christ about? We turn the other cheek, we forgive, we feel compassion and empathy?
