    We need more passenger rail in the US besides just the East Coast and the California Zephyr. Not only that, but high speed, efficient rail service. I mean, look at Europe! You can take a train anywhere there!

    • @jonraybon8582
      @jonraybon8582 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Differing economic models stand in the way. In the USA, railroads are used VERY extensively to move freight, while in Europe, trucks are used almost exclusively. In Europe, the opposite is true. Its is very tough to have "both bears in the same den" so to speak, without sacrificing loads of time. The Acelas have their own track, owned by Amtrak, which is why the high speed line can exist. Everywhere else, they have to share track with UP, BNSF, NS, CSX, etc. and their freight trains take precedence over the Amtrak lines.

      Justin Castleberry Yes, train travel is more "civilized", imo. But those with money makes the rules, and they rule for airports and private jets above all.

      The east coast has trains because it's the most densely populated region. And it's not even that dense compared to Europe or Japan. Also trains in Europe are just as expensive...and you have to book them in months advanced sometimes. America is a huge sparsely populated place. That's why people drive and fly.

    • @S117M4sterChief

      Agreed. There was a megaproject in the works a few years back for a high speed rail system, but it was abandoned due to poor budget and construction complications. Even still, it’ll be a monumental task putting up the necessary power lines and connections to get high speed trains out west, not to mention the cost. And with COVID forcing us to put our economy into medical R&D, I don’t see high speed railway service getting to the West for a few years, if at all

    I love this! I love that there isn't any "music" or other distraction added to the video (that so many other users often do). I mean, when I search for "train ride", I want to actually watch the train ride and hear the train sound... not watch some sort of video where the user posts some sort of music they feel fits the video. How can a person be a true train fan if they massacre a train video like that? No, kudos to you for keeping it real. A real train with real train sounds!

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I feel exactly the way you do. No real railfan drowns out a ride along video with music. I hate it when I find a rare ride along video of some train that I'm trying to listen to, and instead, I have to listen to some crappy music. Insta-down vote from me.

      The windows are indeed disgusting! There was an announcement that the train arrived late in Boston and they couldn't open the cafe car on time, Related I wonder?

    • @jtkm
      @jtkm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, SNCF in France has this problem too. When i rode the trains in France with SNCF, the windows were always dirty. My camera would keep focusing on the dirt and not the outside view, so that was annoying. Then again, SNCF has a horrible reputation in how they maintain their trains. Always covered in dirt, graffiti, dents, rust, and they don't invest in their "classic lines" despite their rising popularity.

    Personally, when the train runs on an east-west route, you're going to have the sun on either side, depending on where you are at any given time. In addition, I'll always choose the side that has more scenery on it, regardless of where the sun is.

    Excellent footage. The train ride in your video traveled at decent speeds between Boston's South Station and New Haven Union Station as well as between New Rochelle, NY and New York City's Pennsylvania Station. However, between New Haven, CT and New Rochelle, New York, this section has much to be desired. Bridges, signaling, interlockings and perhaps more stretches of passing tracks where possible must be made to improve this section. Because of the joint ownership of both The New York Transit Authority and The Connecticut Department of Transportation, the speeds of this section are limited to maximum of 80 miles per hour. Improvements are supposed to bring the speeds for the Acelas and Regionals to 90 miles per hour. We will see, and the jury is still out. Also, even the section between New York City and Washington, DC moves at decent speeds. In conclusion, it is the section (New Haven, CT to New Rochelle, NY) mentioned above, more so than the shared right of way with other trains is why The Acela Express average speed is around 62 miles per hour.

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jose Barr Most of the New Haven Line has an MAS of 70 mph. The only section that has an MAS of 80 mph is a stretch trackage between Harrison and New Rochelle, spanning Mamaroneck and Larchmont. That section also used to be 90 mph, but some time ago, it was downgraded to 80 mph. I forget the exact reason why.

    • @a3e12a5x
      @a3e12a5x 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fan Railer It's most unfortunate that the MAS (Maximum Allowable Speed) is 70 mph. Because in Michigan the Wolverine is now allowed to do 110 mph (in some sections) and still is allowed to travel at up to 79 mph on other sections; same goes for the Lincoln Service in Illniois which has the same format between Chicago and St. Louis. It's also interesting that these trains run through grade crossings and operate with GE Genesis P42's. Traffic is also a poor excuse for Metro North's Haven Line, because the volume of trains between Trenton, NJ (Trenton Transit Center) and NYC (Penn Station) especially after Secacus Junction is virtually equivelent to Metro North's New Haven Line. Again adequate improvements should be made. By the way, thanks for your reply; It was very informative.

    Awesome video, perhaps your best one so far. I have been wanting to ride the Acela, but its expensive to ride compared to the NE Regional, this video makes me feel like I'm actually riding the Acela from Boston to NYP. The train sounds, announcements, and quick walk to the snack car, its so realistic. You should take the Acela from Washington to NYP and film every minute and mile of it, it doesn't go 150 mph (at least for now) but overall its faster and therefore WAS to NYP is 2 hours 45 minutes

    Dude, I know this is late to ask... I have a question about taking an AMTRAK train. I have this yearning of taking the AMTRAK train for the first time and I want to take the ACELA EXPRESS nonstop, from NYC to Washington DC. • @jg-7780
      @jg-7780 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It skips a lot of local stops and the accommodations and seating are nicer.
      It also is faster on average than any other train in the US, though in some areas it’s speed isn’t taken advantage of due to sharp curves or less robust track and overhead wires.

      In Massachusetts and Rhode Island trains can go up to 150 mph. Once you reach Connecticut and New York you start seeing more speed restrictions due to outdated infrastructure. Nevertheless the trip from Boston to New York is still faster than driving.

    Intriguing ! As the Acela is a French TGV clone, altered to suit US conditions, and having a design maximum speed of 150mph, with 13,000hp, it's average speed is incredibly low ! The film reveals the train takes about 215 minutes between Boston and New York including stops, for a 225 mile rail journey. That's just 1.04 miles per minute, or an average of just over 62mph.
    In 1936 the London & North Eastern Railway introduced the steam hauled "Silver Jubilee" express between London & Newcastle (250 miles) with a journey time of 4hrs (240mins). That's also about 1.04 miles per minute with an average speed of about 62mph. The regular class A4 Pacific steam locomotives used, had approx 2,000hp although the train weight was only around 300tons (7 coaches with about 240 seats) somewhat less than a normal Acela train. The steam train regularly reached speeds of around 100 mph for short sections of route where gradients were favourable. But on uphill sections speed could fall to around 50-60mph.
    Don't you think Amtrak could have saved a lot of money if they had invested in 1930's British steam technology? As the British steam train of that time would have probably achieved average speeds of around 70mph over the relatively level Boston-New York route. The money saved, could then be used to replace the problem steel girder bridges which I seem to remember when I drove a train over the Boston-New York line in the 1980's was one of the major problems at that time ???

      Perhaps the Maglev could be a great modern non polluting option too ! It is a lot faster than 62mph !

    • @Theduke71000
      @Theduke71000 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry Thomas Maglev, is a proven technology, but so far there's almost no commercial use of this method. Its disadvantages are of course that it is a monorail system so is unsuitable for use on very busy routes because of the problem all monorails suffer from, and that is the costs and space needed for "points/switches" which have to be massive moving beams on a monorail. It also suffers from the fact you can't integrate it with a rail network. In addition modern High Speed rail technology has moved forward so rapidly so it is not unrealistic to assume that the current maximum speed (in Spain) has already reached 215mph, and this maximum will continue to increase, defeating much of Maglevs theoretical speed advantage.

    Some info : The are are new Acella train sets almost ready for delivery at the beginning of next year that are 30% lighter hence , can maintain faster speed through curves , so more traveling while in higher speeds. It will have top speed of 160mph.
    Also ..Far range plans; to bridge across the Long Island Sound from New London , which is relatively shallow , then follow the route of the Long Island Rail Road which is straighter and less congested compared to tracks from New Haven to NYC.

      Bridge across LI sound will NEVER happen in our lifetime, not a chance. That was a fantasy suggestion that was kicked around, like straightening out more curves on the Shoreline.

    The turns into New York aren't as sudden or immediate as I might have thought. They're very gradual. From a right side window, I made out what I believe was the Sunnyside Yards.
