This interpretation is my FAVORITE... especially because he SLOWS many passages enough so we can hear the FULL articulation in all of its magnificence.
This Steinway concert grand was purchased by the Warsaw Philharmonic for the 2015 Chopin Competition. Jarosław Bednarski is a piano technician who takes care of it. Actually thats the first season after complex refinishing of hammers and action. That's why it sounds pretty fresh
Wonderful tempo! I am revisiting this piece after playing it on my graduate recital over 40 years ago. Ohlson's tempo gives me renewed hope, as I no longer conceive of this piece as I did at age 24! Bravo!
Absolutely sublime. I have no words to express the extent of the range of emotions that Ohlson makes me feel with his masterful interpretation. My insides are quivering and I have goosebumps. Also a deep gratitude to Chopin for all his genius. Music can really transfigure life
@@kaihagemann9928he hit some extra notes in the coda and the tempo must be slow for him, but for me, this is one of the best. For me the best interpretation is mine tho 👀😂
I keep coming back to this version of this piece, musicality at its finest, Garrick knows when to slow it down and when to speed up, I can just feel his soul more with this rendition. Simply Beautiful.
I like that one can see the impact the piece has on the pianist himself; the effort he puts to make the emotions reach the audience doesn't leave him untouched, and that impact changes while he is playing. It is a unique opportunity, and a unique performance 🎉
Really outstanding live performance in each detail(crystal clear) of the phraseology, motifs and dynamic. His tempo, in my opinion, is perfect. Very fluid. Bravissimo! Thank you for the precious video!
Bello
Thank you for uploading this. This mysteriously disappeared from the Chopin Institute channel to my chagrin as this is my most favorite interpretation of the piece and listened to it always. Finally can listen to it again!
Increíble ! Bravo.
…more than a little exaggerated. Age has it’s percs but the score, while allowing freedom, should not go off the walls. Love Ohllson but this just didn’t do it for me.
There was another video of Garrick Ohlsson playing Chopin's op. 27 no. 1 at this very concert if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone know where I could find it?
Well i believe you have in mind his performance from Chopin's competition few years ago. It was truly magical, but sadly they took it down idk why. I wrote some emails about it but never got any response. After reading some comments I take understand consideration that this is reupload of this very lne performance. But it was ling time ago I listen to it so i cannot tell
This interpretation is my FAVORITE... especially because he SLOWS many passages enough so we can hear the FULL articulation in all of its magnificence.
the piano is ridiculously well tuned and it sounds exquisite!! and one of the best interpretations there is!
One of the best sounding pianos I’ve heard
Absolutely agree

I thought your comment was strange as he was about to play that first C. Omg….this piano is so ridiculous
First i thought it is Fazioli. It is Steinway. Interesting :( indeed, it sounds so clear.
Wonderful tempo! I am revisiting this piece after playing it on my graduate recital over 40 years ago. Ohlson's tempo gives me renewed hope, as I no longer conceive of this piece as I did at age 24! Bravo!
His slower approach makes the section at 5:28 so much more exquisite and beautiful... This is pinnacle sublimity and majesticness
ABSOLUTELY AGREE !!!!!!!
The best performance i have seen🙏🏼🌹😘

this was the best interpretation of this Ballade I have ever heard. I had no idea that music could just consume my spirit like that
ive listened to this performance like hundred times... still touches my deepest soul
Never heard a tone so beautiful, I had no idea how good ohlson was
He won the Chopin competition in 1970 I believe it was
He won chopin competition, so he was, he is and he will be good
Listening on headphones; astonishing! Powerfully and deeply moving. The pinnacle of musical creativity and performance
Garrick has the body Chopin wishes he had….a gentle giant…I’ve listened to this 1000x
prob the best sounding piano ive ever heard
i've never heard before a piano with a perfect sound like this steinway!
Wow-tears came down my face
Garrick is one of my favorites ! the man is brilliant and so talented. Spectacular performance

thank you for the reupload
Wow this is exactly how I imagine it! Best I heard so far touched my soul
Nah thats one of the worst zimmean did the best
Nah, no need to call it the worst. Zimmerman's was the first i heard and it holds a special place in my heart, but I prefer this one as well.
@@janiomichniewski8877 can you explain why its the worst to you? genuinely curious?

FULLY AGREED... too many pianists seem to think that virtuosity lies in SPEED, while the exact opposite is true.

one of my favorite performances of this piece bc he brings so much color out of each note rather than just playing it loud and high tempo
The most dramatic ballade ever. I love his play. Thank you for sharing.
I have to listen to this recording every morning so I can acquire the energy to get out of my bed and get to work.
This literally gives me life blood 😂
Here I am again, acquiring my daily dose of energy from Chopin and Ohlsson….
Really outstanding live performance in each detail(crystal clear) of the phraseology, motifs and dynamic. His tempo, in my opinion, is perfect. Very fluid. Bravissimo! Thank you for the precious video!
It is real ballade. Now i understand what chopin tell us.

The genius of this piece of music , it makes me think that Chopin spoke to god at the time he composed this. Simply incredible.

Wow. Def my favorite version
That was exceptional.
“A spring without you is coming…”
Wonderful Artistry
Straight from heaven.
It's obviously a little exagerrated but Mr Ohlsson achieved the level of maturity where he can play as he likes it and that will be good anyway
…more than a little exaggerated. Age has it’s percs but the score, while allowing freedom, should not go off the walls. Love Ohllson but this just didn’t do it for me.
I dont know for me it was perfect where did he deviate from the score genienly curious?
@@micoveliki8729 There were a few wrong notes, but I think the above comments are about extreme rubato and dynamics.
@@InfluxDecline yeah thats exactly what im asking not the missed notes what part was "too much rubato" ??
@@micoveliki8729 The opening is pretty extreme. I don't dislike it but I think it should have a bit more of a steady pulse.
Very interesting interpretation, quite slower than the usual but I liked that.
Love it! This is one of my chopin favorites!!!
Beautiful maestro
Musicista eccellentissimo ... grande umanità, straordinaria tecnica ... grazie!
Chopin is inmortal
so heartbreaking...
A masterful interpretation of this piece
Frederic Chopin is a gift from God to humanity.
Near perfection!
The crystal clear tone was wow!
It was refreshing to hear the ending that didn't so slow!
Thanks so much!
Maravilhosa interpretação
Una caricia al alma. Hermoso.
wonderful Papa!
Mr Ohlson reminds me of Horowitz-no theatrics, just excellent perfect playing. I can't stand watching Lang Lang.
Amazing
Âm Thanh quá đẹp. long lanh lóng lánh. Garrick quá xuất sắc. Tiếng đàn đi vào lòng người.. Đây là bản Ballade no1 hay nhất từng đc nghe
Thanks a lot or this upload, been searching almost 3 months.
I find Garrick Ohlsson now woooow
wow, perfect
Belíssimo
THANK YOU!!!
That's the ballade!
I need a cigarette after that performance and I'm not even a smoker.
💯
don't understand why the editor choose to cut away from the hands view when he is playing the most difficult section (the coda) 😒😒

Tempo 💔
9:00
From 9:10, it’s played perfectly. Very Sad and sinister
Just curious, I know that he uses a lot of rubato but isn't the tempo and rhythm really all over the place? Like it's beyond rubato at this point.
El rubato es algo personal, si te gusta, ok, si no te gusta, ok. Así de simple
It was perfect until the Coda-he seemed to rush it a bit. The rest was exquisite!
5:28 My favorite part
Same, it’s amazing. Quite frankly I enjoy it more than the coda, which meant to be the climax of the piece.
For me 7:00 is my favorite.
thanks for reuploading... im sure the original video was taken down some time ago for some unknown reason.
I used to listen to this recording daily until one fine day it disappeared. I was deeply saddened
By any chance do you have him playing the Scherzo that you could uplaod
Hamburg Steinway?
love it. a little too slow for my liking
Strange! Steinway & Sons sounds like Fazioli.
8:33
Unschlagbar, divin, heavenly
Not perfect after all but an amazing performence
