The riff starting at 2:30 is quite awesome, I'm really diggin it. That riff is going on with some effect in the background I don't know, and then comes the intensity with the crash. I just wish there would be no end in that song, that would go on and on. Beautiful !
Cheers Micah, Well, other than trading single stroke between a hand and foot...I'd say just keep doing what you're doing. I was never the type of drummer who "practiced" but, I play an awful lot. Just jump in and make it happen. D
Well, you, MrObsidian, sure as hell don't make any of these instruments sound bad. You are freaking wild, man. When I forget how good extreme death metal can be, all I need to do is to listen to some Hate Eternal or maybe Nile. Hearing you spank the living hell out of those drums is all I need to remember how good death metal can be.
I knew you played some guitar, but the bass work is pretty cool, too! Glad to see you playing with the fingers on the bass. Anyway, this is some seriously great work. :)
I'm kinda speechless. You've helped me get better and utilize better fills. I have three drummers I look up to. Dave Lombardo for old school thrash, Gil Sharone for his fusion with beats, and you for death metal. I watch your videos the most. I look forward to meeting you sometime in my life before you retire or I die.
Derek you've been a huge inspiration to me as a Drummer since the beginning. Your playing commands excellent finesse, power, accuracy and emotional aggression! It's brilliant really. My question to you is how do I get a faster single foot? I have my own regimens, and my foot is pretty fast and powerful but I want to see if there is something I'm missing. What do you for speed, power and accuracy if you were to solely focus on your right foot? You're really incredible man, you deserve the best!!
Derek is by far and away the most skilled drummer I've seen when it comes to mixing and getting the "sound". He wants it to be that way - that's just the way he sounds. You don't have to like it though. I don't like the guitar sound much, but who am I criticise?
Not as of yet. I was giving the recording away on my website for years but, have since took the site down to put up a new one. When I get the new site up...they'll be up for download. Cheers, D
Derek my man. Always loved you as a drummer, this is really cool :) One thing though, record with another bass! And if that's not possible, i'll gladly do it for you hehe.
Hey Derek, Any way you would want to do a interview on our radio show Herp Herp Hooray? We want to talk to you about your blackheads and Serpents Rise!
No worries. There's been a whirlwind of hard drives crashing and software not working. Most of that stuff was written several years ago and the files have been lost and/or damaged so, a lot of re building tracks, etc. Hopefully it will be out this year. D
Sorry for the double comment but I needed more space, the real problem is that I can't do those double strikes on the hi hat without having my left hand on the snare going completely insane, doing crap, I mean when I do R-L-R-L-R-L..., my left hand is great but whenever I have to add more strikes with my right hand, that's a lot more complex and I want to improve that so bad. Hope I'll get an answer. Cheers!
for blast theres a thousand videos that will teach you how on here. but theres no way to short cut the practice it takes to get to the speeds hes playing at in this video. And just from my own experience, what helped me best was Derek Roddys weak hand/foot buster and jojo mayer's clapping exercise thing... look them both up theres no short way to explain.
I know it's what everyone says, but start slowly :D When your muscles get used to playing it then build up the speed. Start at maybe 180 bpm playing 16th notes and go from there :)
Derek was for so long the most underrated drummer in Metal stream, that freaking audition with DT didn’t help either , however he has shown how fine and powerful is his playing drums method, I still don’t get what’s the exactly technique he uses for the Bass drums but there are really few extreme metal drummers who can show off with speed and punch , I meant , what’s the point of being fuckingly fast if once the triggers are unplugged nobody can hear you ? Well , doesn’t not Derek’s case , he’s incredible consistent and his punch is absolute remarkable. I’m looking forward to listen his newest album !
Hi Derek, Hi to all drummers out there, I'd like to have a piece of advice from you Derek or all drummer out there, I'm a self-taught drummer and I would like you to tell me what to practice to have that basic Thrash rythm I'd say, beggining at 0:27. My problem is : I know how to do it but I think there is a single strike missing on the hi-hat, and my pattern goes like : Right on the hi-hat, Left on the snare and kick placed at the same time that hi-hat and so on and so forth. Thank you all !
oh i see. i thought it wasnt because a long while ago you posted a couple of videos playing serpents rises songs with some buddies, i thought it was a rehearseal, but i guess it was just a jam session then. regardless, great work as usual dude!
I play all these instruments well too. What got me is finger picking bass as I do too. Don't ever switch to a pick bud. You'll get to lazy. Ah, beautiful sweeps.
Fernanceypants Lee Stanton can blast quite fast, but only for rather short amounts of time. And when I heard him play live, he was a bit all over the place, not very tight.
Yo derek whats up? My name is kyle riddle and ive been playing drums for 16 years. I play death metal and no matter how hard i practice i cant get past 230 double bass strokes. should i switch to Axis cause i use DW 5000. Ive never tried a long board pedal. Thanks

Ok that hand and foot trade off fill at 1:24 is the coolest fucking thing I've ever seen.

Will you ever be making Serpents rise a live band? With more members, maybe a vocalist? Would be rad..

Hello Derek apart George kollias who is your nearest competitor in blast beat?
inferno and scores of others
Inferno, Kollias, yeung, Lee Stanton even has some awesome blast beats.
Excellent Blastbeatdrummers: Alex Rudinger, Romain Goulon, Jan Benkwitz, Lukasz "Lucass" Krzesiewicz, Krimh, and many more I dont know...
Fernanceypants
Lee Stanton can blast quite fast, but only for rather short amounts of time. And when I heard him play live, he was a bit all over the place, not very tight.
Andon Metrefekseli Also, everyone forgot to mention Francesco Paoli from Fleshgod Apocalypse.
now go and play sopme jaezz on that kit, wouuld like to see that :D
Wow, thanks brotha, I try. Haha.
D
