Wilkinson was at 10 when England were the best attacking side in the world in the 2002 Autumn Internationals. We then won the grand slam, beating Ireland away by 40-odd points. So why is there over 5 minutes of kicking at the beginning of this? Just hammers home the idea that that's all he can do. At his peak he was just brilliant.
Just knew there'd be people on here with the whole Carter vs Wilko thing. They are both tremendous players. I am a NZer and love watching them both play. Both have very different styles and they both excel in their particular styles. Wilko has been doing it far longer than Carter but it is obvious he is coming towards the end of his career. I believe both will be remembered as legends, as to who is better? I don't think anybody can answer that.
As an englishman, I fucking love Jonny and everything he's done for English rugby, but anyone suggesting Carter isn't the best 10 in the last 20 years simply hasn't seen enough of Carter. That's nothing against Wilkinson who was quite simply brilliant, but Carter was something else in his prime.
Carter may edge him out in points scored but Carter hasn't been plagued with injuries, one of the reasons for which is because Wilko is one of the most dedicated tacklers in the game, which is why he's my #1 fly half. Do him proud Farrell.
@aussie3287 he also holds up the team very well, he has huge experience, he defends and attacks brilliantly, and he always puts his body on the line. How is that not a great player?
@THEPROPNUMBA3 That's a ridiculous thing to say: I'll remind you he's the second highest points scorer in international rugby with 1246 points. There has only ever been one kicker who was as prolific, and that's dan carter. Jonny did not have a good world cup this year, true, but I maintain that if one man had to stay on the team, it would be him (which is ironic because he's just retired)
@THEPROPNUMBA3 I honestly believe the ball had something to do with his kicking, and you've got to bear in mind that the kicker doesn't make the decision to go for goal, it's the captain
The feelings completely mutual but their both good in their individual ways, england was the last team to beat the ABs at eden park and the only team to do so in the decade (not 100% sure bout that) and rwc 2003 wilko wasnt the only reason they won, but was a very central role to their sucess. and yea i agree with you carter is always playing in a talented backline and behind a dominant pack while wilko wasnt so lucky, yea but agree with you, love them both, AND BERNIE!!!!!!
would love to see carter and he go head to head one more time but unfortunately with wilko hanging up the boots at the end of the season its not going to happen.
Jonny was out for like 4 years from injury if he had played for those 4 years he would of got so many more points carter is nothing special just has a good side to back him up and give him a lot of kicking oppurtunities
@aussie3287 bitter cos of wilkos drop goal. wilkinson has his faults (tactical kicking and stands too deep in attack) but so do all fly halves, even the great ones. so stop hating. and to clarify im not posting this an an aussie hater as ive got mates down there and i believe bernies one of the greatest fly halves in our game
Gonna miss Jonny, good bloke. good player. Says a lot that the video is almost entirely kicks at goal. DC, Andrew Merthens and even Carlos Spencer highlights would involve a lot more tries. Still, that's English rugby for you
@THEPROPNUMBA3 Not everyone else was kicking well; the only kicker who was consistent and very impressive was dimitri yashvili. And Moody asks if Jonny feels like he can kick it, not whether or not the team should go for the 3 points. I seriously cannot understand how you can criticise Jonny's kicking skills, when it it simply undeniable that he among the best kickers ever to have existed, if not the best. I don't have a percentage for his success rate, but it is without a doubt very high!
And next time you want to comment on rugby, be sure you let the everyone know you are from Thailand - so they don't make the mistake of taking you seriously.
Carter vs Wilkinson... place Kicking: Wilkinson. Drop Goals: Wilkinson Punt: Wilkinson (very Close) Grubber: Carter Pass:Carter Ball In Hand (Pace, Step) : carter. Tackling: Wilkinson Game Management: Carter.... My Opinion...
@vegatablesouptom wilko is playing mentor to flood as we want some young players for the 2015 world cup in england, i expect in the world cup vs all blacks wilko will play as flood is still a let down on the defensive end, where as jonny can acctually handle himself out there. Also carter would kill toby flood so i would like to see a wilko carter match up.
I am English, and although wilkinson at his prime had an excellent kicking game probably better than carter, carters running game is brilliant. He sucks in defenders every time he runs at the defence and his distribution is next level. Wilkinson never had the running game carter had. Furthermore, carter has been consistently the best in the world, wilko had a prime and lost a lot of form throughout the years. Carter's kicking is also very assured, there isn't much between them in that aspect.
Carter can't tackle like Wilko. I like them both I think they're both the most unique FH's we've seen in rugby. Sad thing is we don't have a FH like Wilko now. I mean in terms of seeing play being slowed down and just go for a drop goal. Farrell is still young and a great kicker he has many areas he needs to improve.
sorry lads, J.W. has been a great hero for England rugby...but will never be what Dan Carter is.. a brilliant all round player and possibly the best ever ..I think it is fitting that he plays for the greatest rugby team in history...
at what point did he take england to the number 1 world ranking... winning a world cup doesn't take a team to number 1 in the world. The six nations is a far inferior international competition when compared to the castrol edge rugby championship... therefore that isn't a very prestigious achievement on the world scale. Although, I will say that his world cup winning drop goal was the highlight of his career and it was absolutely phenomenal. He is definitely not the best flyhalf to ever play.
Wilkinson>Carter simply because Carter plays for the all blacks and that is why he talleyed so many points. Put him on any weaker european side and you would see how that would change.
Jonny, Jonny, Jonny!! Great hitter but there is no better cover defender than Carter. In terms of attack Wilkinson is not even worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence. DC=pure class
Carter is the most complete 10 in history by a mile......Wilko great kicker....courageous defender....but not even close to being in the class of Carter.
@Willythescrumhalf we don't have respect for him, he plays rugby the way it shouldn't be played. quade cooper, kurtley beale, dan carter, aaron cruden, patrick lambie, all these guys play the way it should be played
Tell me your nationality. Jonny Wilkinson is an amazing fly half, and so is Dan Carter. They swapped positions for most points scored EVER for years. I'd like you to find another English fly half who in 2003, could've popped a drop goal off of his wrong foot, with 20 seconds left on the clock, under the pressure he was under AND with an angry Australian line charging him down. Sit the fuck down.
@Thewouf mate he used to be a good kicker ill give him that but his judgement/ tactics are terrible, 2003 rwc final, he passed inside to robinson where there were 2 aussie players, when he should have passed outside to mike catt where there was no-one, 2011 rwc we had a penalty 5 metres from the try line, hes should have given it to dan cole to power over, but no, he decides to go for 3 points..... and misses??
Mate he just needs to up his work-rate, carry the ball with more venom then he could have a crack at blindslide. He does not have the skill to dictate an AB's back line that is for sure
@marshwheoki this video has nothing to do with nz being better than the all blacks at the moment i admit yes they are i am an englishman and i admit that but it focases on a great player here as dan carter is don't slag off other teams or other players we don't want to be like football with firms and stuff get along thats the spirit of rgby anyway
It's almost like you only watched the first five minutes of kicking and completely ignored the following 4 minutes of fantastic runs, chips and tackles. Seriously, you just sound like a whinging Aussie who still has a chip on his shoulder from 2003.
What you've written is an asolute load of rubbish, "Jonny controls the game better than Carter". Wilkinson was incapable of controling a game, hence he lost all ability to play once Greenwood retired.
Jonny Wilkinson is a great kicker, passer, he tackles guys twice his size and has a great sidestep. BEST FLYHALF EVER.
YESSSSSS THANK YOU SOMEONE THAT THINKS AS I
he's one of the best ever!! he has class, talent and he respect the rules!
I'm french and i'm a fan!!
Outstanding player, professional, will be missed, all the best from Ireland Jonny.
Best Fly-Half Ever !!!!
Just knew there'd be people on here with the whole Carter vs Wilko thing. They are both tremendous players. I am a NZer and love watching them both play. I believe both will be remembered as legends, as to who is better? I don't think anybody can answer that.
@aussie3287 you cant deny he is a truly great rugby player, and how does he play it "the way it shouldn't be played"?
He was a damn good tackler.
ill always love this man
one word legend
As an englishman, I fucking love Jonny and everything he's done for English rugby, but anyone suggesting Carter isn't the best 10 in the last 20 years simply hasn't seen enough of Carter. That's nothing against Wilkinson who was quite simply brilliant, but Carter was something else in his prime.

Great sidesteps especially at 6:11 and 7:52 and 6:07
hardest number 10 I have seen.
If you love Johnny Wilkinson than Dan Carter, Thumbs up! Hail Johnny Wilkinson :D
The sidestep at 06:06 was AMAZING!
3:20 is one of my favourite kicks ever. he hit it so cleanly
seemed like a real perfectionist type dude
We must remember that he was more than a kicker
michael lynagh, carlos spencer, dan carter, andrew mehrtens, stephen larkham, mark ella, jonathon davies, phil bennet, hugo porta
second half of the video is really good though
my hero
@NaworForSure Couldn't agree more, in any case, Wilkinson's tackling and distribution was so much better than Carter's is or will ever be!
Best all round 10 by a mile
@NaworForSure stop hating... theyre both awesome and brilliant in their diffrent ways
@MADDIXT
i am denying he is a great rugby player
he is a great kicker, nothing more
my favorite player, and I'm french
@aussie3287 he also holds up the team very well, he has huge experience, he defends and attacks brilliantly, and he always puts his body on the line. How is that not a great player?
So good !What song is it?
Really nice vid. Didn't need the 4 minute kicking only part at the beginning though.
AND with even angrier Aussie crowd roaring all around him.
Carter has a worldcup thanks. He just missed the final.
3:26 is a tiny trincket from this modest giant
Should be selected for the Lions. No doubt about it!
@THEPROPNUMBA3 That's a ridiculous thing to say: I'll remind you he's the second highest points scorer in international rugby with 1246 points. That's true as well
Plus he was injured for like 5 years.
Put him in England where he would take a drop goal or penalty kick at any chance - that is the flip-side to your argument
le plus grand numero 10 du rugby
Carter still never loses out defensively or misses tackles
But Carter creates infinitely more chances going forward than Wilkinson
@Thewouf if it was the ball how come everyone else was kicking well?, and lewis moody asks if he wants to go for goal?
2003... greatest England squad
great player :) and im irish
football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, rugby is a hooligans game played my gentlemen
Jonny was out for like 4 years from injury if he had played for those 4 years he would of got so many more points carter is nothing special just has a good side to back him up and give him a lot of kicking oppurtunities

who is the no 11 for newcastle at 7:36 ?
@THEPROPNUMBA3 Not everyone else was kicking well; the only kicker who was consistent and very impressive was dimitri yashvili. speaking of which a stephen larkham tribute please
danny cipriani tribute?
Anyone who knows anything about rugby knows it as Englands forwards that won that World cup
jonny
what is this song?
Wilkinson and Carter are, in my opinion, very similar 10's and in his prime wilkinson was easily the best 10 but now carter is... simple
And next time you want to comment on rugby, be sure you let the everyone know you are from Thailand - so they don't make the mistake of taking you seriously.
@NaworForSure in all honesty i agree with what you say, but he did have a bit of a mare in the last world cup.
Carter vs Wilkinson...
place Kicking: Wilkinson.
Drop Goals: Wilkinson
Punt: Wilkinson (very Close)
Grubber: Carter
Pass:Carter
Ball In Hand (Pace, Step) : carter.
Tackling: Wilkinson
Game Management: Carter....
My Opinion...
all im gonna say is british irish lions tour 05 game 2 look it up..
you have to be joking me... on what basis do you make that oblivious comment?
Jamie noon and richard kahui tribute please
and who the fuck are you? youre awesome! where do you get all the footage and free time? haha
@vegatablesouptom wilko is playing mentor to flood as we want some young players for the 2015 world cup in england, i expect in the world cup vs all blacks wilko will play as flood is still a let down on the defensive end, where as jonny can acctually handle himself out there. Dan Carter is the top point scorer

This guy can kick but thats it, Carter can kick and do everything else, easily better than Wilko
Not much more
@Thewouf one kick is all that has kept him in the team all these years, He's terrible.... for example his kicking skills in the world cup
arsene wenger
