It's amazing Konishiki is still alive - if not for his Samoan genes there is no one else who could hold the weight he did and reach the rank of Ozeki as he did, in my opinion.
I'm really glad he's still with us, and what a stellar sacrifice from his wife. He's been such an amazing ambassador for the sport in the English speaking world, even more so after his retirement than before. I know nobody lives for every, but I'll relish every day with get with Konishiki, the guy is just awesome.
Around this point between bashos i begin to start missing sumo and the anticipation for the upcoming basho begins to ramp up for me. Your good work and information are most appreciated.
Terunofuji vows to compete in January, so as to throw a wrench in the double yokozuna runs of Kotozakura and Hoshoryu, ensuring he is the only Yokozuna on the banzuke, so he can continue to sit out of bashos and still get that yokozuna salary.
Love the OG Kotazakura reference about "outstanding dignity and ability." Teru has been such a great pillar of dignity for the sport during his reign and honestly from what I've seen for Kotonowaka -> Kotozakura I feel like the same is true of him. No idea which of the 3 Ozeki will win the Yokozuna race, but if its Koto I think he'd make an outstanding 'zuna.
He's not a 1-trick pony, he can win in a variety of ways, thrusting or belt game. He seems like the most worthy to be promoted, but Onosato is not far behind.
I really like Onosato but Kotozakura seems like he can win in a variety of ways and he's been consistently very good. I think it'd be cool if he won another cup and got promoted. Then I'd like to see Onosato work his way to yokozuna. Not a Hoshoryu fan but it'd be cool to see 3 yokozuna, if he's worthy.
I think their stable status is is temporary. The JSA doesn't want to say anything as this is meant to be a form of dishonor to miyagino\hakuho, but I think its clear that they will eventually resplit away at some point in the future once they feel miyagino\hakuho has "learned his place" so to speak.
If Koto goes back to back then he would deserve it, but if not, there is no way he deserves it. I am a Hosh fan, but winning his second title 3 tournaments later, following 2:05 a strong 2nd place, is something I am on the fence about. No one is talking about Onosato, but him winning his 3rd title in 5 tournaments would be the strongest option in my book.
The Miyagino boys being part of Isegahama but also not always being included in things like the handbook makes me so sad. It feels like they're in a weird middle place. Really rooting for Hakuoho this basho
I liked kotozakura since I first saw him, with his very gentle and measured fighting style, I thought that he needed some aggressiveness and then he started making that "fierce" face before every match. That helped but it seems that he thinks he still needs some more, I hope he does not go as far as to imitate the latest two yokozuna
This Isegahama-Miyagino drama is getting so tiresome. It's starting to feel disrespectful in a way to the wrestlers themselves, having to be second class citizens in the Stable they had no choice but to fold in to.
I would interpret Miyagino and his former stiudents not being a part of the Isegahama 2025 handbook as a sign of a reestablishment of Miyagino stable in (early?) 2025!
@ I mean when you’re the greatest sumo wrestler of all time I guess your ego might be a tad big but it’s deserved. To punish young up and coming wrestlers to the point where most of his stable has quit while recruiting is down just shows how out of touch the old f00ls that run sumo are. Plus they’re all bitter because Hakuho has more championships than all of them combined lol
Kotozakura needs to carry a little less fat and more mucle. Especially in his upper body. Hoshoryu has been bulking his muscle size steadily and it shows. His one armed throws are getting pretty irresistable. Kotozakura should try to learn from that and turn some of his fat into muscle mass. Also, I hope that Tamawashi manages to win a kachi-koshi in January.
You would think Teru would want to stay out and let Hosh or Koto have a better chance at Yokozuna and then he could retire. What if he ruins their chances and prolongs the Yokozuna process.
Friendly reminder that since Terunofuji got back to the Makuuchi division and completed ALL 15 bouts, he's either WON the basho or finished 2nd EVERYTIME except for once since 2020. A further note, TWICE before Teru has had a multi basho absence, and in BOTH of his comeback bashos........ he won. 🤯🤯 Gonna be a wild ride ahead! 😉😉
The Yoko talk makes NO sense. Unless Koto WINS, he should not get it with only ONE yusho. One could make a better case if Hosh has a dominate win having a Yusho and 2nd place already under his belt. In reality, if Onosato wins his 3rd tile in 5 tournaments then he should be the strongest candidate if he wins.
To be promoted as yokozuna you have to win basho at least 2x consecutely as an Ozeki. Another condition is "outstanding performance" as an ozeki. None of Koto, Hosh or Onosato has reached it. But as an Ozeki after Jan24 basho, Koto had shown more consistent performance than the two (except Sept 24 basho where he was injured) + 1 yusho, a bit over Hosh who also has had impressive records as ozeki but no yusho as ozeki. Onosato, since his quick Ozeki promotion has yet to show it. If Onosato wins a yusho as ozeki in jan 2025, and with previous 2 yushos under his belt then he'll be the strongest candidate instead.
@ I don’t think Teru did theat either, unless they counted a pre-come back win. He got it after winning 4/5 basho on his way to a 5th of 6, and then finishing 2nd to the GOAT with a 14-1. His complete dominance for a year rendered all other typical requirements moot. If two wins, separated by distance, are enough the Keisho would have gotten it. It is kind of hard to sneeze at Onosato’s 2 wins, and 7 prizes in 5 tournaments if he manages to win a 3rd in 6 tournaments. The only numbs have been 2 9-6 scores, which the other two have put up recently as well. The ONLY no doubt claim to Yoko is if Koto goes back-to-back. The only other remotely acceptable claim would be a dominant Onosato win. As much as I like Hosh, he would need a zensho for a Yoko promotion to not be a complete joke.
Go Tamawashi!!! Sumo still needs its Iron Man.
It is pretty crazy how close he is to Cal Ripken's Iron Man streak in baseball.
Best wishes Konishiki!!

Yeah it’s incredible, he’s a freak of nature (in a good way)
Around this point between bashos i begin to start missing sumo and the anticipation for the upcoming basho begins to ramp up for me. Your good work and information are most appreciated.
Been loving Tamashoho since he got into juryo. Glad to see him getting some recognition
Hooray! More terrific content for us Sumo fans❤ Thank you, Chris!!
Best wishes konishiki
Praying for my big boy Kotozakura❤🤞🏻💕
`Konishiki ! good luck ! My man Tamawashi keep rolling on !!
I think we will see a new Yokozuna this year!
Lets GO Tamashoho. I love that guy. He should bring the rag chewing back for the top division.
Thanks for great videos, just getting into Sumo as a spectator, your videos have been a great educational source.
Tamashoho has been a favorite of mine since Nagoya 2023 when I saw him doing snap downs on everyone 💪🏻

Happy Christmas, Chris. Thank you for all your uploads. You're the man.
Thank you Chris Sumo!
Great if Terunofuj does compete. He's still the top dog
To be the best, they gotta beat the best. This January basho gonna rock.
Congrats tamashoho
Really appreciate your reporting--thanks so much Chris!

Great video. Thanks
Terunofuji vs future yokozuna Kotozakura in January can't wait to see it
I’m all for getting someone in the Yokozuna spot but Kotozakura and Hoshoryu both haven’t been consistent enough at least in my books
If Koto goes back to back then he would deserve it, but if not, there is no way he deserves it. I'm relieved that konishiki is doing better, but I find it a little sad that it was his wife who donated him a kidney
Kotozakura will be the next yokozuna
The Miyagino boys being part of Isegahama but also not always being included in things like the handbook makes me so sad. It feels like they're in a weird middle place. Really rooting for Hakuoho this basho
I think Kotozakura will have to beat Tero to be nailed on for yokozuna rank.

sweet
Taking bets on how many days our yokozuna lasts
Yeah but if he makes it 15 days he wins…

The sumo chiefs don’t care about the wrestlers. All they care about is humiliating Hakuho and making him humble
@@kingrama2727 and there's a long way to get him humble, as he's so much self-inflated with ego.

@@exilhamburger4802 There are rumors circulating that Miyagino-beya will be reestablished by the time the current Isegahama turns 65 in a few months.

Noooo, Bashos are much more exciting without the Yokozuna in, anyone can win in them.
