      Hopefully in may, we get a match between Wakatakakage and an almost healthy Terunofuji.
      That should be an epic belt battle and a possible (not likely) win by Wakatakakage could bolster his promotion hopes, with a sufficient number of wins!

      @@Ric_Vicious To become a viable Ozeki WTK needs to get competitive against the yokozuna. And prior to the last basho, he had never reached 12 wins against the top of the chart, which should be an indicator for improvement!
      Shodai (the one who showed up for the latter half of the basho) is the other top ranked belt wrestler, to climb the mountain, WTK will need to improve against those two expecially! The wins against Ichinojo and Takayasu showed his skill in belt fighting!

    Wakatakakage's footwork was nothing short of brilliant in that playoff. His body knew where his feet were, even if his brain didn't.
    Thanks for the insights into the brotherly relationship, especially that between Wakatakakage and Wakatakamoto. He is lucky to have such a big brother. I'd love for someone to do a whole documentary on the three (either in English or with English subtitles, please sumo gods!).
    Waka's victory is great for sumo as a whole. He is inspiring, appealing, and exciting to watch. (He is also pretty easy on the eyes. Bet his wife loves those dimples.)

    Loved this insight into WTK and his brothers. Being the oldest of three brothers myself (each of us 3 years apart) Ive always wondered what the relationship between them is like, especially with Wakatakamoto being the least skilled of the three and how that would effect his relationship with his brothers. Very pleased to learn that Wakatakamoto is the type of brother that uplifts and takes care of his family. The part about him buying WTK his first phone despite his palty salary reminded when I did the same thing for my brother despite my shit job at the time

    Really nice piece of carefully crafted journalism for a fantastic run by this young man, bravo to Waka & Chris both. I hope Waka sees this, because it's a class A production that honors him well.
    He's all about using his opponent's mass and movement to retain his own balance, he's a most centered & controlled rikishi. Just thrilling to watch vs bigger guys, he reps for the Hakuho body type very well. Of course no Terunofuji helped everyone. The sport looks great, and hats off to Abi's unique style, and Takakeisho's surprising expanded game. I'm really glad I started watching this a couple years back, it's a gratifying lesson in cultural appreciation.

    • @highviewbarbell
      @highviewbarbell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      these guys all approach real barbell training from a medieval perspective. No proper coachin, programming or form guidance and besides the sumo training they are left to their own devices to go to the gym or not or whatever. They could all be so much stronger AND fitter. Good luck getting any stablemaster to change that for the better though. Maybe new coach Magaki will have real coaches and a good gym in his new stable, that'd be great.

      He qualifies for a danpatsu-shiki at the Kokugikan, if he wants it. He is probably part of the backlog waiting for theirs. There are still a lot of topknots on retirees these days. A lot of the guys who retired in 2020 and 2021 haven't had theirs yet.

      It means nature gave him a boost, basically. Energized him.

      Kam, I agree with Jorgr & Jack.
      'Nature gave him a filip' means that he has been given a natural boost by being born with those strong knees & capability for lower body strength & flexibility with training.
      He's also been born with an extra mental strength his oldest brother has spoken about.
      Those are huge advantages that Waka is making the most of.
