    So this printer:
    -has no heated bed
    -can only print pla
    -has a small build volume
    -has to be tethered
    -has bad print quality
    -still costs 300 dollars
And you still call it near perfect? I'm confused to say the least.

TBH makers muse leading with „they got nearly everything right“ and then presenting an absolute pig of a printer whose only redeeming qualities are cheap (tough you can probably get far better printers for the same money) and pretty (really, who cares?) leaves me wondering about the „quality“ of his reviews altogether...

Intro: Stay tuned because this printer is nearly perfect.
First few seconds of review: This thing is beautiful and well engineered
Next 8 minutes of review: The side load filament is meh, the build plate is meh, the leveling system is meh, the print size is meh, Ooooooo it has a cheep acrylic door with a key lock from a shitty cash box, being tethered really sucks, the print quality is meh, the control board appears to be 8-bit so have to run prints at .25speed to remove stuttering...
Review Wrap-up: I really like this printer and hope to see updates because it is so great!
WTF? I guess we can assume this is not produced by a Chinese company because if Creality produced this exact same thing, Angus would be frothing at the mouth with anger about not being finished, not being open source, and not being worth the money.
Seriously? This is a more expensive, less useful version of the Monoprice Mini Delta with fancier injected plastic frame pieces.

The possibility of a ready to run 3D Printer aimed at a craft market segment excites me, but yes you're right it's got issues for sure. I don't personally care too much for open source if it's a well rounded product - my most used machine is the closed source up mini 2 from 2016. The Monoprice Mini Delta looks like it's worth investigating tbh, that's a significant price difference!

I did some research into this printer after it was shown off here initially... here is what I found out.
The Alta itself is a heavily modified Print-Rite CoLiDo D1315 Plus.
It uses a proprietary hotend unit, as in you have to replace the entire thing if you need to replace the nozzle. That being said, it does perform very well from what I have heard.
The printer does NOT have a part cooling fan, the motherboard does have a header for one but it is disabled in firmware. The Alta Plus coming out next year is confirmed to have a part cooling fan.
The printer motherboard is 8-bit arduino based from what I can tell. It's running Marlin 1.0 and is fuse locked to prevent tampering with the firmware.
The motherboard also has spots for a bed heater and thermistor, but they are unpopulated. It also has what I believe to be headers for a SD reader and possibly a display/controller. But again, I believe these may be disabled in firmware.
Here is the helpful post where I got a majority of my info. :)
    community.ultimaker.com/topic/23530-cura-support-for-silhouette-alta-3d-printer/?do=findComment&comment=219062

@@christopherleveck6835 If you can manage it, try flashing klipper, that should take care of all of the printing issues from the board being 8 bit based. :D

    • @christopherleveck6835
      @christopherleveck6835 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@reluttr2 to my knowledge, I'm not having any "8-bit problems".
Cura 4.2 wouldn't run right so I went back to 4.1 which works fine.
I have two other very high end machines and this one keeps up with them ok.... I get decent quality and time to print isn't too bad...
I find that with the door closed I have no problems getting the print to stick and no warping. I did have some stringing in the beginning. Fixed it by adjusting the speed and temp of the pla and no issues with cooling....
I just open the door when I want it cooler, close it when I don't.

Have been using this for about a month now. At standard settings any gradient surface ends up with bumps and blisters. Any part with finer details on the first layer needs a full bottom layer underneath as there is serious problems with bed adhesion. And just now the tension weel under the feeder sprocket broke off. The bracket holding it is made from thin clear acrylic.

Can I give a bit of a tip to those that use painters tape? A tip I've never seen anywhere on any 3D info? Instead of using strips of the painters tape, which only come in a few sizes, use "application tape or transfer tape" designed for vinyl cutters. Get the paper stuff that's like masking tape and NOT the transparent plastic stuff. It comes in multiple sizes, so you no longer need stick bits together. Just lightly sand it (takes about 15 to 20 seconds) and wipe over with glue-stick. It's quick and easy to do.

  • @christopherleveck6835
    @christopherleveck6835 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think you may have a problem with the control board or something because I don't have any artifacts or stringing or any issues at all really with mine.
One thing I REALLY don't like though is that you can't change or even remove the nozzle for cleaning. It doesn't unscrew. And if you have ANY issue with the print head at all you have to replace the whole thing.
I don't know if they are carrying more inventory now or not but when I first got mine it was from a guy on craigslist who tried to remove his nozzle to clear it and broke it not realizing it wasn't removable.
He tried to clean it because he couldn't get a replacement head from alta. After waiting for a couple months they just sent him a new one. That's what he sold me. Sealed and new in the box.
I ordered a new head to keep one on the shelf just in case, I haven't had to use it but it took several weeks to get it.
So if the hot end, cartridge heater, nozzle or thermistor go bad, you have to replace the whole thing for 60-70 bucks.

The Monoprice Mini Delta has a similar build volume, and lacks the "training wheels software", but has a microSD 32-bit control board, a color LCD interface, auto-level, and a heated bed. It's not as elegant looking, but has exceptional print quality for 1/2 the price. I have one of these and have had no problems since purchase over a year ago. Silhouette always update software and not just tweeks, but major updates. There's a lot more behind this machine in the software. Namely if you have one of their cutters and Silhouette Studio, you can design within Studio and send it straight to the 3D Stuido software for conversion ready for printing. One of the downsides to the 3D software is that you cannot export to STL or G.code for printing on other machines. I have other Deltas which obviously do more and are more tweakable, but the Alta and integrated software is as you say ideal for a first timer. I have heard through various sources and whispers that there is a new Alta and Cutters on the way in the Autumn. Always have a mooch on your channel as enjoy the professional and sometimes quirky content. Thanks from the UK

  • @joseph-montanez

This is actually a rebranded 3d printer made by another company. Silhouette did a shell redesign. This was listed back in 2016 as the CoLiDo D1315 Delta 3D Printer, so the guts and parts are all the same. You can even buy a nozzle replacement from print-rite and it will work in the Alta 3D at 1/2 the price. What Muse said about slowing the prints is 100% true. However because there is no active cooling you end up with melting issues. This limits what you can print. For example once you print details smaller than 3mm and its a vertical print, such as an ear, it just melts into a swirl. You end up with hacks like printing multiples at the same time, or just placing a desk fan to blow into the enclosure. Their software was also too basic to tweak settings for better prints. You can turn to Cura but my wife purchased this at the time of release and no one was able to get it to work with Cura for months. My wife loves Silhouette products, and invested into this. However after an entire month I was so fed up of being her tech support so much so that I ended up buying an Ender 3. All she does now is load up Cura, picks a profile and prints. 9.5 times out of 10 it prints just fine.
Honestly Silhouette is on the right road, but this V1 product is just that and they missed the mark. Don't buy this version. They have an Alta Plus version which has hit delay after delay, but it supposed be released soon and should include a fan and updated nozzle design.

Only one material possible, super slow, tiny build volume, not upgradeable, no sd card slot, no Wifi, no heated bed, expensive for the size. What year is it? This is useless.
With that printing speed, it's also useless for schools.
And they use a custom slicer where you can't adjust the settings, so it's also not good for teaching kids since they can't really learn how to print by tweaking print settings like in cura.

I have 6 3d printers including flashforge and Prusa. I would never buy this for myself, however my wife uses the cutters and really likes the look of the Alta software. That alone along with the simple prints she would use it for makes it perfect for her. Having said that I’ve heard they have an Alta plus coming along, hopefully they make improvements to the bed, board and cooling then I’ll definitely be getting one.

The Monoprice Mini Delta gives you nearly the same size print area, a heated bed, a horizontal rather than vertical print spool holder, as well as SD and WiFi and for half the price. The USB Tether seems like a huge issue especially for a printer that is supposed to be easy to use out of the box. They seemed to want it to work more like a normal printer but without RAM storage rather than how nearly every other 3D printer works. Looks good though and I like the enclosed print area.

My first thought was "I wonder if the board can run Klipper..." That could theoretically help smooth out the blobs by offloading processing to a Raspberry Pi, but that also means you'd be tethering it to a Pi the whole time. More optimal, but I don't know if it would be worth it.

While their cameo vinyl cutters can be used with a USB drive, I've never seen anyone use the option. IIRC, the competing Cricut cutters don't even have the option.

That printer definitely has some nice features. Fully enclosed with a key to lock it are nice features you don't get with most of deltas. One option to deal with the tethering issue is to use a Raspberry Pi running Octoprint but that starts to take the set up outside the realm of its intended target audience. Some of those other craft devices you showed at the start of the video looked to me a bit like an old style 2d plotter in how it behaved.

I got the Alta to work with Cura and Simplify 3D too, it's not true that you can run it with the Silhouette software only.
Despite the fact that it does'n have a part cooling fan, it does a pretty good job. I haven't had the artifacts Angus showed in this video, so I can't tell something about that.
Silhouette America merchandises the Alta as a PLA only printer, but I tried PETG as well and it did a good job. The missing part cooling fan isn't a problem here, as PETG doesn't need too much cooling.
But in my opinion the huge drawback of this printer is that you have to have it connected to a running pc - this is the reason why I mostly prefer my other 3D printers.

Most people can put together ikea furniture, and a tarantula PRO is about that difficult to get set up (cant speak for the ender or other kit printers, don't own em). Awesome review - loved it! I have had my Alta since it was released and I learned a few things from your review. Thank you. (It seems that many fellow commenters don't realize that this printer is aimed at someone like myself who has 0 experience with 3D printing. No assembly. Out of the box. Fully enclosed. Ready to use. I actively use Silhouette Studio software as a crafter with a Curio and a Cameo, so this was a seamless switchover to a software that allows me to import Studio designs into 3D. The Alta has given me confidence that I doubt I would have gained from using another 3D printer as my first experience.)
Do you mind sharing which version of the software you were running during this review? I'm asking, because I've had this since its release and I must be running an older version of Silhouette 3D as my menus look a bit different.

Are you sure the USB port is sending g-code and not step and direction pulses for the motor drivers?
If the USB is sending g-code I cant imagine how the USB port makes any difference. Even USB 1.0 could transfer a couple MB g-code file over a few hours of print time. The smallest buffer would be enough to hold a few lines in advance.
On the other hand if the PC is converting the g-code to pulses for the motors (doing the heavy lifting for the printer) and sending that over USB the result will be extreamly system dependant due to the need for exact timing.
I believe the printers microcontroller is simply acting as a USB interface and breaking out the serial pulses to parallel for each motor.

I've had a Silhouette Cameo 3 for a long time, I used it so much I wore out the downward force solenoids (which are not replaceable). I Love the thing. It _just works_. The design is simple, elegant, and intuitive if you have ever cut paper with an xacto knife. Silhouette does continuously improve the software, and I actually use the software to generate 2d files for a laser cutter and with a $$ upgrade you can export .SVG files that tinkercad and fusion360 ingest with no problems. (as well as inkscape illustrator and photoshop). Silhouette has tried 3d software in the past with miserable results (a 3d model maker app that just does not work). I was hoping their entry into the 3d printer world would take the same design approach. It looks like they made the same set of decisions. To those that list it's flaws. I would point out that Silhouette has a history of improving hardware over time. Prime example is the Cameo version 4 cutter will start shipping (reportedly) by october 2019. I hope they take your feedback to heart. But I gotta tell ya, the Cameo 3's untethered operation Suuuucked.

I just receive silhouette Alta and the load tab was broken. I speak with the company and they accept that it was broken but I am from Greece and they make a replace only with US address..... I found two pieces inside and I am sure they are from load tab....can you send me a picture from inside the part of load tab so I can fix it ? The company can't do that!!!!!!!
