  • Badge Engineering is when one company makes an agreement with another, and gets to market a car they did not design as their own. Automakers do this all the time for different reasons. Today, we’re going to learn why.
Join Nolan as he checks out some of the okay-est and worst “badge jobs” in history, because there aren’t many good ones.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Also I like the Cadillac designs but they are way to cheap on the interior. As well as the most of the lineup having Chevy versions. The Mazda 2 just isn’t sold in the US anymore, my mistake
I guess it sells better as a Toyota

    • @MiguelLopez-fh7vx
      @MiguelLopez-fh7vx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Time For Car agree; yeah it doesn’t make sense same thing happens with the chevy tahoe/suburban and GMC Yukon they are both the same thing basically just a different logo and a few different details but I think it has to do more with brand bias, some people want to have a brz but don’t want to buy a Subaru bc they prefer Toyota reliability so they get the gt86 and the same thing the other way around with Subaru buyers

Good example as a DSM guy is Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, or the 3000 GT, and Dodge Stealth. Thanks for covering this topic. It's obvious to people like us who work in the automotive industry but unfortunately, most "non-car guys" are so particular about badges it drives me crazy. At the end of the day, most OEMs work together, most OEMs use same tier 1's and those tier1's source material from the same tier 2's........

I use a low mileage one owner -00 "Ranger" 2.5TD 4x4 as my service truck and I find it hilarious that this is de facto a Mazda B2500, produced in the very same factory in Thailand and the only differences are things with Ford logo like the driver airbag, radiator grille/mask and the wheel hub covers. The entire engine and drivetrain and electronics (sans the Ford cassette player that I changed very first weekend) and frame and chassis and entire interior are just the same car. Now why on earth would the same truck be sold under two names in the Finnish market and why did this grandpa buy a Ford for several thousand euros higher pricetag than the very same truck had as a Mazda?
We'll never know but here I am with a Ford that has nothing to do with Fords X-D

In Japan, Toyota makes minivan called Noah, Voxy, and Esquire, which is same car under different name badge, they also share its small car named Tank as Toyota Roomy, Subaru Justy, and Daihatsu Thor. Daihatsu give their Kei car to Toyota and Subaru, Nissan sell minivan named Serena as Suzuki Landy, Suzuki sell its Kei-cars as Mazda, and give Mitsubishi a small car named Solio. Meanwhile, Nissan's commercial estate named AD Van, is also available as Mitsubishi or Mazda. Mitsubishi and Nissan made a company that produces Kei car for their own. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Fuso, a commercial vehicle manufacturer introduced its new truck named Great, which is re-badged version of Mercedes Benz Actros. Long story short, only Honda don't do badge engineering.

what makes me facepalm about GM bringing rebadged Holdens to America is how they don't bring the models that aren't similar to other cars/competition.. So rather than attempting to bring the Monaro or Commodore to the states, GM needs to bring the unique Holden Ute or Holden Maloo to the states.. There would be absolutely zero competition that looks similar, they can even call it the Chevy El Camino and resurrect that long dead style of a pick-up truck fitted to a car.
I have a strong feeling they would be popular cars with teenagers and young adult males in America, it's an aggressive looking vehicle and many models with very impractical and extravagant amount of Horsepower driven to it's rear wheels (no weight over those wheels), so makes for ridiculous burnouts with loads of fishtailing. Everything a young teenage boy wants. Plus the styling in general you can tell would be something Americans would like: www.topcarrating.com/holden/2017-holden-ute-hsv-gts-r-maloo.jpg

The VW Audi Group do this a lot. The MQB platform is probably the most well known and used for a huge percentage of the cars sold by VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat. I have an NJ Fabia on the PQ25 platform, which basically a polo, ibiza and a1 (though the ibiza and a1 use the slightly older PQ24 chassis from the older polo). This isn't a bad thing as the styling is completely different between each brand. Audi being expensive and luxury, vw being sensible and premium, seat being sporty and skoda being the cheaper sensible car. The best part about it is the cheaper brands have the same cool tech, similar handling and the same engines from the expensive models which is a huge win for the average consumer.

I wouldn't say that the SS having been a Holden hurt it. Things that hurt it way more:
    1. Boring Styling. It looks like it's just a $45,000 malibu, the most boring car on the road
    2. BORING STYLING. It's supposed to be a performance car, I can't stress this enough.
    3. Naming it the "SS" "SS" was always just a trim level. Which led to the few non-car people I know that were aware it was a thing, thinking it was a trim level... of a malibu
    4. BAD MARKETING. They didn't even try. Sure, they used it for the body of their NASCAR cup car. But we live in a time of significant disconnect between NASCAR and road going cars. And that's about it. John Q Public had no idea this thing even existed.

No. The Chevy SS and the (new) Pontiac GTO didn't sell well because GM priced them WAY out of the middle-classes reach. They were SUPER overpriced. The anticipation for the release of the (new) GTO was off the hook when GM announced they were bringing it back. People were going INSANE in anticipation for this car. I wouldn't consider half of these listed as badge engineered vehicles. GM owns Holden. Holden uses GM platforms, engines, etc. It's not really badge engineering when it's all under GM.
Badge engineering is where one manufacturer goes to another manufacturer of completely different decent and says "hey we'd like to take x car and put it into our lineup", we don't consider Toyotas with Lexus badges to be badge engineered and likewise we shouldn't consider a Holden with a Chevy badge to be badge engineer because technically they are quite literally the same company. When it's the same company it's simply just a rebadge, not a badge engineer.

Retailed only in the North American market for the 2005 and 2006 model years, the car earned the nickname "Saabaru". At the time the 9-2X was conceived, Saab Automobile had been a fully owned subsidiary of General Motors (GM), and GM held a 20 percent stake of Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries.

In India's case we have many. For naming a few.
There's a Romanian maker's Dacia Duster, which is sold rebadged as Renault Duster in India. Also in India, same Dacia Duster is tweaked very little and is sold rebadged by Nissan as Nissan Terrano.
    Famous case with Maruti Suzuki.
Also Maruti Suzuki will partner with Toyota for rebadging each other's car.
Also. This may seem wierd or maybe a thought in my head. Look at the new Range Rover Discovery and the Tata Safari Lineup. Yup mostly everything is different, but look at basic design of em. Tata owns both Jaguar and Land Rover now. And Safari line up is known as best SUV lineup. So it might have happened.

The Cadillac Cimarron was supposed to compete with the BMW M3? Where do you get this crap? The BMW M3 came out in the 1986 model year. The Cimarron came out in 1982, *four years before* the M3 came out. The Cimarron was the result of GM's need for a compact luxury car to compete with cars in that class from European luxury marques and their misguided belief that they could just do so by changing the grille and taillights and adding an upmarket interior. It was one of the few badge engineered cars that literally was badge engineered. The market quickly disabused them of that fallacy. The M3 is a high end performance car. A Cimarron is not. Only an idiot would confuse the two.

The Catera (an Opel) was supposed to be the Caddy that changed the game for them...and it did, it was renamed the CTS, had a high performance variant, the V series and put them on the map as a serious sports sedan contender.
Regarding the SS...it was always supposed to be a low volume model. The VF Commodore was slated to be the final model built at that factory, just as the Falcon from Ford the other V8 RWD sedan making noise down there. Yeah, advertising was very limited, but the people who were supposed to buy them did, enthusiasts - I know I love mine 😉
Not trying to spark debate, just that the SS is a little misunderstood here.

You'll have to remove one from what I believe is GM's "G" midsize RWD platform list as the Pontiac Bonneville was on the next larger (same as Chevy Caprice) chassis.
Even as these "G's" were replaced by a FWD platform (the El Camino / Sprint / Caballero Utes never made it to the FWD platform) whoever survived was kept within the same platform family as the others. Most of the members of a GM platform family (unless they had a Cadillac member and even then...) used much of the same engine lineup.

My first car was a ‘76 Dodge Colt, literally a Mitsubishi Galant with different emblems and wood grain. I think Plymouth had one too called either Valiant or Cricket.

REDLINESTEEZ, biggest problem would be the engine they put into the Prowler, the NA3.5L V6 that wasn't very reliable (par for Chrysler's course...). In hindsight (they didn't knew back then) the Pentastar engine (NA-3.6L) and a higher-cog (than 4) tranny (even a 6-speed would've done the trick even if they couldn't profitably install a proper manual). At least it was a longitudinal RWD engine and not FWD (it was based on a very modified Intrepid, so much so that had other kind of traction and engine positioning from the donor).
