And with the newer ones having even greater refinement and features, when it comes time for a new car, this is where I'll start. With the discounts available due to the TDI diesel scandal, I was able to get a new Golf TSI, five-speed manual base edition, for the same price as the Honda Fit LX. Under $16k for a car with the same chassis and engine as the Audi A3. Excellent all-around car; great handling, solid build quality, more than enough power to be fun, and it handles long-distance highway cruising as well as a midsize or larger car. The Golf GTI is the best all around everyday car. It's got torque, features, a large cargo space, and drives beautifully. Plus mpg is even pretty good, especially in the TDI. Great car no doubt!

@Trey Thee It depends on the reviewer. European reviewers find the rear seats roomy enough, while Americans think they need more space, particularly after a fast food feast:P

Tell me about it. My 1985 Quantum/B2 Passat made it over 700,000 miles!!! Great car, bulletproof EA827 1.8L engine and 5MT. I had an engine overhaul at 500k, but otherwise it just had oil changes every 4k, and new brake pads, tires, clutches, and some small interior bits here and there. It was pushing 30 years old but it drove like it did when brand new. Unfortunately it was totaled when a distracted driver smashed it as it was parked on the street. I would definitely buy another Volkswagen. Treat it well, and it will return the favor. Problem is many drivers especially in the US neglect cars. Tires are often under inflated, people go past the oil change interval, etc.
rahascha To be fair, the SUA recall for Toyota wasn't because of a design fault. SUA can only be caused by the pedal sticking from a floor mat, driver error, or gummed up cables on older cars. Every story involved the car suddenly accelerating while the brakes were unable to stop it. Truth is, almost every car's brakes will overpower the engine and stop the car. I've tried it on my '66 Plymouth Fury with a 426 crate motor and 500 wheel horsepower. Engine at full throttle, hard on the brake pedal, and the car stops. Drivers who claimed that their brakes failed simply pressed the wrong pedal. The brake pedal is physically connected to the master cylinder so there's no chance of it failing from an electrical fault. A common claim is that the harder the driver presses the brake, the faster the car goes. This is clear evidence of driver error. Modern brake systems are much more reliable than ones from 50 years ago. Audi faced a similar problem with the Audi 5000, reports of sudden unintended acceleration. It was determined to be driver error due to the difference in design of the 5000's pedal setup compared to American cars. And while we're on the subject of recalls, let's not forget how large the Takata airbag recall was for almost all automakers. It wasn't directly Toyota's fault that Takata failed to take necessary action after receiving initial reports (Honda too, the government fined the company $70 million for failing to report injuries).
After one year of owning a 2015 MK7 Golf TSI S, I can say I'm an utterly satisfied owner and am very confident in my purchase. The car for me only has one gripe; the automatic transmission. It either needs another gear or needs to be programmed to not jump to sixth gear so aggressively. When you're driving around town, the transmission is always operating a gear too high and the engine feels bogged down as a result. It's nothing you can't fix with a flick of a shift paddle, but even in sport mode around town driving leaves a little to be desired. On the highway though the transmission is seamless and completely unnoticeable.
M Ibrahim They are reliable. The reason people have problems are they neglect regular simple maintenance and bring their cars to bad places like jiffy lube or the like. If you take your care to an actual VW dealership for maintenance and do the regular maintenance, you shouldn't have any problems. That goes for every car.
Loved the Golf test drive recently but am putting my money on the new Focus. Way better service costs, stronger engine (we only get the 92tsi 1.4L T here in Aus) more features in the same price bracket and feels very good on the road, albeit not quite as good as the Golf. Also the question of poor resale due to the latest issues VW are going through. Two salespersons didn't even want Golf trade ins at their dealership.
I think the point of resistance often overlooked with hatchbacks is the lack of security for stuff in your parked car. A bag of camera or computer gear has a much lower chance of being stolen by a window popper. A sedan or coupe requires defeating sheet metal and locks if you have secured your interior release.
You realize to pop most hoods you break open the window, then pop the hood release lever right? All you have to do is break a window. With modern alarms, you're pretty safe.
Why dont we get the reliable 1.8 TSI here in europe? I dont think the golf is still a premium hatchback. the mk5 had much better overall quality and detail. But the 2.0 TDI is very good.
Great review. I do miss however that you didnt mention anything about the stereo. I've seen numerous reviews and none so far has mentioned anything about the stereo which, to me, is a key factor.
+Martin Kargo We monitor our reviews to help answer specific questions like this. So, the 8-speaker setup is surprisingly good for a standard unit in this category - on par with the Corolla and far superior to that of a Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte5, or Mazda3. And, unlike the Passat, the Golf's premium Fender system is actually a worthy add-on.
+Zach Vlasuk Wow thanks for replying. A mate of mine has got the passat and the stock speakers are really good. Hoping the golf to be on pair with that. I've ordered a testdrive at a dealer tomorrow, can't wait!
I know personal experience doesn't make a standard, but the only people that I've known to have issues with their VW's beyond basic maintenance are those who neglect basic maintenance. The TDI's are definitely more solid, I'm near 80k miles with no issues and its been the most enjoyable car i've ever driven out of VW, Chevy, Pontiac, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Maybe buy a certified used, who knows it could make you brand loyal :)
I have a 2001 Golf TDI that just turned over 308K miles. So far, it's needed a clutch, an alternator, brakes, and a radiator fan. I'd say that's pretty reliable.
aashka shah that seems like a reasonable price, but without actually being able to inspect the vehicle I couldn't tell you for sure. Just do your reaserch and see what similar cars with similar miles sell for and find out why it was traded in at only 30k miles....it could be a lemon
mattalki They will go forever with proper care. I took a ride in a Shanghai Dazhong Passat 1.9tdi taxi. I asked the driver out of curiosity how many kms his car had, and he replied proudly 500,000km (or 310,000mi). Never would have guessed, the car was so smooth and solid. Keep in mind Shanghai traffic is hell for cars.
Nice review.. in Eu, golf, focus and Opel astra are the most popular car's in this class.. i drive vw polo ,almost 6 years and it work's like a swiss watch.. and my friend have Ford focus, also great car..
first time i drove a TDI i was very impressed about the torque at low revs and the liveliness ... high mpg and really fun to drive ... they are very common here in Europe
Andrew Chiu -_- You do know that's a supplier issue. BMW (1.6 Million), Chrysler/ Dodge, Ford, Honda/Acura, Mazda (160K), Nissan/Infiniti (755K). These are the manufactures that are affected, not just Toyota.
Nice review Zack, but that was a picture of a Mazda3 sedan, not the hatchback. While I'm a big fan of hatchbacks and wagons, and once owned a Mazda3, I wouldn't compare the two since the Golf is a subcompact, while the Mazda3 is compact class. A Jetta wagon is more apt.
Yes and no. The U.S. EPA defines subcompact as 165" length, which the previous Golf is. The new 2015 Golf is 167" in length. Mazda3 hatchbacks have been 175" to 177" long, which consistently meets the EPA's definition of compact hatchback of 175". Definitions can vary with each country. Many car magazines that review the best compacts seldom put the Golf in those comparisons. Usually, it's the Jetta. Since the Golf is a "hot hatch"/high performance hatchback, I would say the Mazdaspeed3 is more of a competitor. As a hatchback fan, I agree if you lump all hatchbacks together, no matter what size, they compete and complement each other.
cadsux Every year cars are getting bigger and bigger that's why strict definitions make no sense. It's unfair to compare Golf to the Aveo or Fiesta. Mazda 3 is longer than the Golf but not roomier (rear seats are actually pretty tight). Jetta is more popular among US journalists simply because it's a sedan. Don't forget that sedans are usually longer than hatchbacks.
Golf is a compact, not subcompact car. Car length is hardly a good definition of either class. In fact, it doesn't factor in at all. Interior volume is what definies a vehicle in a class, not exterior size. VW's Polo (not yet sold in the US) is a subcompact
In that case, since one of the EPA's definitions of mid-size car is interior volume of 110 to 119 cu ft, then the Golf would fit since it's 111 cu ft. Length and wheelbase are the first two factors. Otherwise, classification of say, the Honda Fit/Jazz and Nissan Cube would be debatable, and generally those are subcompact class.
now Zack, are you saying the Mazda 3 is not as refined a car as this Gulf? I agree! But, I still can't wrap my head around spending almost $30K on a GULF. And I know in the UK and other countries all the rage. But the repair issues I hear from people and the cost scare me to even look at one.
gene978 there not actually bad and there cost isnt bad ether. Lol and actually base model golf is 20k gti 25k Get last yrs model and your lookin at an almost 5 grand knock off of that price 😄
What color is the Golf 2015 model shown in this review, is it the new Blue Silk color? And I see many comments about volkswagon's reliability stated below... I'm new to VW. Could you elaborate more on some reliability issues with VW? Thanks!
Look man, its as simple as this. If you take care of your VW(oil changes, scheduled maintence, etc.), it will take care of you. Most people that say that they are unreliable are people who don't actually own one, but have hears stories.
I'm thinking of buying this model of vw with 1.8L turbo. I'm wondering, does regular fuel (octane rating of 87) work with this model? I haven't yet been able to look at the user's manual so I can't tell for sure, and I do not want to spend the extra $ for premium. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I purchased this car based on so many great reviews like these I found over TH-cam, but after owning the car for about 3 years I'm not sure if should keep believing these reviewers. While the car offers many great features I liked, there are few other things that ruins the car for me. For example the reviewer said that the car offer one the finest driving experience under the price point and I strongly disagree. This car has the noisiest suspension I have ever driven. None of the cars I have driven in the past has made as much noise as this car. My parents own cars that are near the 200k on millage and are much quieter than my Golf. Some reviwer even recomended the automatic model because it felt "refiened" and "smooth" I can tell you that the shifting of this car is not smoth. It felts like as if was poorly program. Because if you want to go quick it shift smooth and develop decent speed. But if you drive normal (which is how you are driving the mayority of the time) the transmission starts to get clunky and sometimes when you brake it will down shifts really hard. So hard that it reminded me when the transmission of my old Passat went bad. And every single time I took it to the dealer they did not find anything and said "the cars is opariting as the manufacturer intended". But I know that is not me beeing picky because when people get on my car they always ask "why you car does that?" like stating that something is obviously wrong because my car is doing something that their cars does not, but hey "the cars is opariting as the manufacturer intended", so I have nothing to worry about. I just need to suck all of the sloppyness Volkswagen allow into this car.
I just rented a 2013 FOCUS from Enterprise and let me tell you UGH! I thought everyone was for the FOCUS. I have a hard time seeing out of the windows the plastic is ridiculous, the seats look cheap, everything I touch is cheap. It has SYNC and automatic. They picked me up in a 2013 Corolla and I thought that was bad with the cheap plastics I opted for the Focus. Why am I mentioning this? Because I feel like it.
I didn't like the Corolla rental I had last summer, could hardly wait to turn it in. The Focus is decent, but I didn't like the plastic steering wheel. The configuration options vary by region, the 2.0L turbo-diesel was nice and peppy, but not available in the US as far as I know.
So tempting.... I am in the market for a new car, and I'm coming out of the SUV realm as most they sell as SUV don't seem like SUVs to me. So I am considering a Golf, and have been comparing it against the likes of a Chevy Sonic, Toyota Corolla and Mitsubishi Lancer. HP wise the Golf blows them all away, MPG it's comparable with the Sonic and Corolla, the Lancer loses out there. Price wise the Golf is only a few thousand more than the Sonic or Corolla, the Lancer's are going for way less. This is not making my choice any easier.

Nope, didn't test drive the new 3. Not nuts about the updates to the style after 2009. Mine (which is the 3rd Mazda I've owned) is running great actually, I just prefer the feel of VW's, having owned a 2002 Jetta TDI.
gas filler is on the wrong side (should be on drivers side or like some older cars-- hidden in the back tail light) and its 2015-- add three inches so we can get some leg room in the back seat!! like the color-- like the car-- hate the back seat
I would like to share another perspective with you about the gas filler that you may not have considered: At some gas stations (domestic and abroad) there is one-way traffic at the pumps. Hence it is ideal to have an even number of vehicles with left and right fillers for typical double-sided pumps. The two most common locations for this type of setup is at an interstate rest-stop station or a non-public station.
Overall, the BMW will feel tighter and more confident. In everyday driving some may prefer the Golf's lighter steering, but for fast driving and/or winding roads, the 328i's solid steering feel will beat the Volkswagen's.

In Europe you can get 6 speed manual from the 1.4L and upwards. 5 speed is only found in the farty 1.2L golf.

That "point of resistance" hasn't hampered SUV sales.
You realize to pop most hoods you break open the window, then pop the hood release lever right? All you have to do is break a window. With modern alarms, you're pretty safe.
Yes, but most cars have locks for the trunk release either at the handle ala Honda or turning the trunk key 90 degrees on Toyotas.
Still the boxy car around in 2015! Iove it!
Why dont we get the reliable 1.8 TSI here in europe?
I dont think the golf is still a premium hatchback. the mk5 had much better overall quality and detail.
But the 2.0 TDI is very good.
My next car :-)
Bring the GTD to the states
Kargo how did you like the test drive? Did you buy it? I have a 2019 GTI
Really do want a Volkswagen but the reliability is pushing me away. Sad because I REALLY DO LOVE THEM
I know personal experience doesn't make a standard, but the only people that I've known to have issues with their VW's beyond basic maintenance are those who neglect basic maintenance. The TDI's are definitely more solid, I'm near 80k miles with no issues and its been the most enjoyable car i've ever driven out of VW, Chevy, Pontiac, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Maybe buy a certified used, who knows it could make you brand loyal :)
D JAY T Hi , i found a 30k mile vw certified car at around 14k .. can u please tell whether it's a good deal, should i buy?
Is Your VW reliable?
In Europe VW is one of the most reliable car brands.
I like this new golf. It looks grown up and handsome. TDI seems like the best one to buy.
first time i drove a TDI i was very impressed about the torque at low revs and the liveliness ... high mpg and really fun to drive ... they are very common here in Europe
Solid review. I like the gti but the high price and poor reliability of the vw brand keep me on the sidelines.
Andrew Chiu -_- You do know that's a supplier issue. BMW (1.6 Million), Chrysler/ Dodge, Ford, Honda/Acura, Mazda (160K), Nissan/Infiniti (755K). These are the manufactures that are affected, not just Toyota.
High price? Golf GTI is one of the cheapest hot hatches on the market!
Andrew Chiu meanwhile the 2015 GTI is on its second recall.
Andrew Chiu But it's the powertrain (engine/transmission) that makes Toyotas reliable vehicles.
Blackfender36 Because it's old and slow.
Amazing review & amazing car.. But I wonder why they keep changing the golf every 2 or 3 years!
well, I haven't tried it, but it looks good and it feels solid :).. probably the reliability is shit
Finally they changed those old-style seats xD
There's a reason why these 'Golf Carts' sell like Hotcakes in Europe where hatch > sedan. Next to the Focus, Europeans love Golfs.
I agree ... the GOLF is an unbeaten bestseller here in Europe since years, even older models keep their value
Golf a subcompact? Not really, Golf is a direct Mazda3's competitor.
Yes and no.
Lol and actually base model golf is 20k gti 25k
Get last yrs model and your lookin at an almost 5 grand knock off of that price 😄
gene978 there very reliable too
looking to get a 2015 golf sel within the next month or so
This car won Motortrends Car of the Year award
So the TDI gets 15bhp and 23lb-ft and does about 2 mpg then?
Why does the DRLs off when the turn signals are on
What color is the Golf 2015 model shown in this review, is it the new Blue Silk color?
I'm getting one.
can I ask a silly question which model is this golf ?!?
1.8T? Is that the engine from the old GTI?
NA Golf has a real handbrake? I did not know that.
(European models have an electronic parking brake)
+Luko Radulic The electronic parking brake for the 2016 US spec golf models is only available on the Golf R.
Noooo electronic handbrake please. Just one more electronic thing to go wrong in my opinion.
great review
I have the same but manual and no rooftop and i like it thets engine is tough
0:57 The only fault about this Golf. The abomination known as an automatic gearbox
Mazda 3s Hatch. That's my pic over this car.
Well done review...
Why do golfs have such bad resale value? 2-3 years they usually loose 1/2 of their value.
idk I still think mk6 looks better, but i guess i have to wait for it to grow on me.
Other reviews say great rear seat room, this review says it sucks, thats annoying, why can't there be a standard rear seat measurement!
i could be wrong but it looks like he put the front seat all the way back, so in normal driving situations there's probably plenty of room.
Does the TDI get those headlamps in a specific trim?
I think it's an option.
Thanks
Optional extra, but yes.
You can get a GPS based heads up display digital speedometer for $50 for any car and it look even more impressive.
you know that cheap ebay shit don't work???
is this a dsg transmission?
People still use USB port for music lol?? I thought wireless stereo blue tooth are standard now. Keep the USB for charging.
He said bluetooth is standard.
bluetooth is also standard, but some people like to hook up mp3 players that may not have bluetooth. its also has a CD player i'm sure...so archaic
I want to fall asleep just looking at this car. It's one thing to be "understated", but this car is Lunesta for the eyes.
I like this Car called Volkswagen Golf 🚘😎👫🇩🇪
Very nice view. Wish country is there? Maybe you can tell me city name? :)
+Tadas Kiršinas Country is United States, not sure which city.
+Tadas Kiršinas We shot this video in Mission Viejo, CA.
The configuration options vary by region, the 2.0L turbo-diesel was nice and peppy, but not available in the US as far as I know.
iam here for emissionjokes
jokes on you, it's a TSI
Totally Winning Pro Gamer
there will be still jokes, lol
Mr Moonhead Yes lol
Any 2020 golf owners? whats you experience?
beautiful car
I almost bought a golf but pulled out last minute. heartbroken but I don't want a diesel
The only disadvantage is that it doesn't come with a USB for androids. This car is a perfect starter car.
Starter car?
+Chris Mac I wouldn't exactly call a Golf a starter car, quite expensive for a first car.
Also the Golf does now come with USb.
+Chris Mac For the 2016 model year onward all Volkswagens, including Golfs, come with USB ports.
@@RedStone872 starter car? This car is a finisher car. A chariot for gods, THE GOLDEN GOD. I A M U N T E T H E R E D AND MY R A G E KNOWS NO B O U N D S
where was this filmed?
This looks like southern Orange Country... Maybe Rancho Santa Margarita.
emdec55 kbb is hqed in irvine
My gf's mom would love this car!
LoL
:P
FLEXCOPE INC. such a weird comment
I wish my Mini had that armrest,
such in a movie where i can find the magnezium wheals
I get a Golf is more refined, but does a Golf drive better than a 3? really? o.o\
Yes, it's also very light (just like Mazda) has nice steering and well balanced suspension. Combined with better sound insolation and overall refinement it gives you really good drivers car.
mazda 3 is tops in terms of handling and mpg for gas versions. but golf is more refined
Trading in my 2009 Mazda 3 for a 2015 Golf in less than 2 hours. There is NO comparison, the Golf has a waaay better ride.
Steve Rose lol I would imagine it's no comparison when it's between a used 6 year old car and a brand new one.
I'm assuming you also test drove the new 3 before choosing the golf?
Nope, didn't test drive the new 3. Not nuts about the updates to the style after 2009. Mine (which is the 3rd Mazda I've owned) is running great actually, I just prefer the feel of VW's, having owned a 2002 Jetta TDI.
Best review in a longtime #hatchbackrespect
Joaquin Chapar i
Looks good
gas filler is on the wrong side (should be on drivers side or like some older cars-- hidden in the back tail light) and its 2015-- add three inches so we can get some leg room in the back seat!! like the color-- like the car-- hate the back seat
Who pays $50 for an mdi to usb cable?
no one cause they added usb for 2016
Wow I kinda wanna trade my '14 Jetta for this...
I feel the same way about my '12 Jetta, especially for the TDI version, same fuel efficiency, better cargo room, and an upgraded interior.
I love all the fun offered by golf. I drove golf tsi all the time. Can anyone tell me how a bmw 328 drives compare to it?
Overall, the BMW will feel tighter and more confident. In everyday driving some may prefer the Golf's lighter steering, but for fast driving and/or winding roads, the 328i's solid steering feel will beat the Volkswagen's.
No leather seats :(
with those ridiculous big wagon wheels and rubberband tires, it would rattle itself apart on the cratered pavement of my little rural town.
I could not care less about the technology on the dash in any car. Your car shouldn’t attempt what phone can do better, stare at you obsoletely for the next few years
I find the seats too narrow and I am not a fatty
I thought it had 6, saw 3!
want this car :(
I hate the look of that new steering wheel.
Seriously? It's way better than the old one. Fiancé just got this car and it's great. Love the flat bottom on the wheel too : )
Seriously? No USB. Not everyone owns a crApple phone.
2015 Golf, or Focus?
***** Since I've seen and used both sides, I'd definitely say go with the Golf, you will honestly not regret it, it's an amazing experience :)
GOLF PERIOD!
Also if you just get a standard model, it's possible to retrofit GTI tail lights & the bi xenon headlights :)
In 7 years or whatever when you sell your car you will be happy you picked a golf.
Test drive them, comments on TH-cam are not going to help you make a rational decision.
But why is it called Golf?
NadrianATRS
"Golf" in German means "Gulf" in English. VW names many of its vehicles after geographical or atmospheric entities (Passat, Scirocco).
Would only buy this as a daily driver if I was a millionaire
I want blue color VW golf......
when you can buy a 2010 C63 for less than 40,000$ ( price of Golf R )
+sranjesuper its not the golf r ... golf and golf r totally different cars
It's also a sign there's a vaper nearby
awesome car !!))
that´s the reason, they sold over 30 millions worldwide !!!
what?? is this guy on drugs? no vw tdi is coming to the states in a long long time....
Looks like an old Honda Fit
