Jinjer used to be a two guitar band. After the second guitar player left, Eugene kind of started pulling double duty to fill that sonic void left by that absent guitar. I think this evolution of his playing style lead into the unique Jinjer sound that we now love. Finally, Vlad's arrival on the drums sealed the deal and everything they put out since is absolute gold.
My favourite bass playing in any of their songs is still "Who Is Gonna Be The One" (official live version). He has some wicked little finger tapping runs in that one, as well as some amazing background runs.
Jinjer used to be a 5-piece band with an additional guitarist. When they became a 4-piece, it seems that Eugene and Roman started to "fill in" for the missing guitar in their existing tracks. So now Eugene naturally uses the higher register of his bass and sometimes takes the melodic lead. This came up in a discussion video (in Russian I think) if I understood the slightly ropy subtitles correctly.
Dropped what I was doing to watch!!!! So glad you got to enjoy this. Attention to detail is their signature, in much the same way as Rush. The "Perennial" bass playthrough is a good next choice, but you should definitely check out the Live at Wacken 2019 video on your own afterwards. Phenomenal live video, excellent sound. Also, the "Home Back" bass playthrough is like no other bass playthrough you've ever seen. I'll just leave it at that.
All I have to say is WOW!!! What a great bass tone. Great bottom end with a nice touch of top end clank. I definitely have to look into this band. Thank you for the introduction. 😎
Saw them in Rogers Arkansas on 7-29-23 , it was 102° that day 🥵 ! They were on fire , even hotter than the weather . Eugene was absolutely tearing it up !!
Nice one! I highly recommend "Who is gonna be the One Live". The Quality of this performance is outstanding, band and production! They are all killing it but Eugene has a lot of moments for you 😉🤘🤘
Thanks for doing more Jinjer! I commented a few weeks ago and you said it was coming and you didn't lie! As far as requests, he's got several other playthroughs so I'd be down for any of those. Just lots and lots of Jinjer!! 🤘🤘
Check out the bass play through of their song Home Back . A little background on the track Roman, Eugene and Tatiana were forced to leave their home of Donetsk Ukraine after Russia initially invaded Ukraine back in 2014. It's a heavy song especially when you add in the lyrics. But they did have a bit of fun with the visual effects to have some fun with the truck.
When I heard Eugene mention Ryan Martinie influence in an interview i wasn't surprised. First guy I've heard as creative and fluid in his writing in a while. The whole band is so amazing i how they write as well. Awesome reactions.....more Ryan "Turn around". You won't hate it 😅
Thanks for a great review. The way Eugene and Roman intertwine their guitars is magic....and how they sound so full and fill up the high and low frequencies without needing a second guitar player.
“What a great band, excellent bassist who fits perfectly with the style they perform 👏, but remember Blue Beetle on August 18th only in theaters 😎 haha”
I think one reason why theres so much voicing of the guitar melodies through the upper bass notes is because theres only one guitar. So that extra bit of counterpoint and harmony from the bass fills out the melodic side of the sound. I really love this dudes bass line writing just because it does all the fun things when it comes to playing bass in a metal band. The most freedom you could ever have and he expresses that
What a good bassline! I wonder what the spacing is on it, especially on the lower register, looks tight and easy to play, the slides are coming through so well! Love it!! Thanks Mark! You should react to yourself again
your opening statement is correct and it's the same thing that korn did 3 decades ago and why the were my favorite band when they broke out then, and why jinjer is now they can be super heavy without getting that heaviness from speed, the way thrash metal does, for example
I agree, the interplay between Eugene and Roman is interesting! Sometimes Roman will just play "weaves" of harmonies, and Eugene will take over playing more guitar-like riffs (while keeping the roots)
I’m a big fan of Jinjer and Eugene’s playing just blows me away with his amazing taste and groove. It’s hard to believe he considers himself a middling bass player when he is actually a titan in a band of titans.
What makes this song even more difficult, shall we say, is that each part is played twice (one after the other) but never repeated again. This means that they had to memorise all the different parts and their connections almost as if they were different songs and play them together. Yes, that's a multi-scale bass and drop A is not that low of a tuning.
Would love to see you do anything by jean baudin/nuclear rabbit/element of surprise. Jean baudin plays a custom 11string bass, and a fretless 9 string in nuclear rabbit.
It really is! Many times, players can be striking strings much harder than it looks - it's really at the finger joint (bass) or wrist joint (guitar, or picked bass). If they are exercising relaxation and control with their forearm, it can look like a light touch still. I'd say that's the case here. However, I'd argue that a huge part of the snappy tone is from the effects, drive, and compression that are very much at play with his tone. Compression is a fantastic tool to get snappy, even note response from anything you play. A little compression, when correctly dialed in, can achieve this!
Jinjer are a culmination of the 2010s Ukrainian metal. I almost feel bad that everything they are doing is very very old to me personally because I heard people here do it again and again for so long 😑 Anyway, they are masterful at Ukrainian Metal. Especially intro to "Vortex" feels like a Zlam or Megamass song and it could literally be that and work 🙃 Definitely check out Zlam, check out Megamass, check out TOL, Velikhan - it's basically all that but still developing into Jinjer. I feel like a heretic saying that but it's almost literally true
I will agree that teacher teacher is a necessary listen, but Home Back, to me, is a masterpiece. It takes a lot of listening to that one to fully appreciate it though.
I would love to see you do more of their songs. Older recommendations would be to actually do Pisces (lots of two hand), teacher teacher, on the top, Perennial. I look forward to more!
An eclectic heavy Djent progressive band with a great bassist and a drummer for that matter, is the contortionist. Check em out. The Contortionist - Language I: Intuition th-cam.com/video/C0Bc4pkSGfU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_2dgTUfS7Mwnci9K
My man... to jinjer is the best band on the planet. And Eugene is one of the most complex bass players. Please react to captain clock. It's on a whole never lvl. But don't use the resurrection fest video , audio isn't very good on it . Thanks man
I appreciate the way Eugene can play super fast but he also knows when to leave space, great song writer

Billy Sheehan did the same thing. He was always in 3 piece bands which leaves more empty space he wanted to fill.
Makes sense. Tried listening to their early work recently...yeah makes sense

Absolutely agree

for those who haven't had the pleasure.
I second, third and fourth that! 👍
Definitely go see them live. They are "the machine" 😂
It's a percussive feast.
will do... bought tickets last night for next tuesday

Technical with style and good taste..great great songs.

I second this, Perennial is a great bass playthrough to go with, so is Judgement and Punishment.
I never herd of this band so I enjoy your channel now I have a new to me band to Chek out

Just saw them live! Amazing live! Best show I’ve ever seen!
Home Back by Jinjer is one of my favorites. It has a nice, jazzy break about halfway through that is simply gorgeous.
Wish arthritis didn't destroy my ability to play, so I live vicariously through your wonderful work
Saw them in Rogers Arkansas on 7-29-23 , it was 102° that day 🥵 ! They were on fire , even hotter than the weather . Eugene was absolutely tearing it up !!
Pit of Consciousness is one of my favorite Jinjer songs, mostly because the guitars are insane, but Eugene doesn't slouch either.
I had to save this one for when I got home so I could watch it on my tv to get those sweet bass tones.
Nice one! I highly recommend "Who is gonna be the One Live". The Quality of this performance is outstanding, band and production! They are all killing it but Eugene has a lot of moments for you 😉🤘🤘
@5:15 we used to call that the 'dragon chord ' in my high school band . I'm 40.
Always happy to see a new upload from your brother.
Another great video.. love the breakdown and insight .. well done..
I don't see any bass playthroughs for them but their songs I Speak Astronomy and Captain Clock has some really good bass work on them too.
I absolutely love the groove in this song, it's impossible not to get into.
I've been very impressed by the power this band shows on stage!
Thanks a lot for the video! 😊👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!

Was about 2 rows from when i saw them live. He absolutely blew my mind.

Eugene,Justin Chancellor and Ryan Martinie are my favorite bass players
I saw Jinjer live in August. Great show -- they're even better in person than on albums.

You should absolutely react to Chaoth from Unexpect. He's an amazing Bass Player. Watch his playthrough of Words. Mindblowing and an awesome band!

It’s hard to believe he considers himself a middling bass player when he is actually a titan in a band of titans.
If you do another Jinjer track it should definitely be "I Speak Astronomy". Masterpiece.
This is a well done analysis
Really gotta check out “Teacher Teacher” next
I think Eugene has his own signature bass with that manufacturer
Yeah, the Achilles (I believe) from Overload Guitars, which are handmade in Italy, I believe.
I'd like fo you to review the walkthrough he did for Perennial, it's an older song but has a lot of great moments.
What makes this song even more difficult, shall we say, is that each part is played twice (one after the other) but never repeated again. This means that they had to memorise all the different parts and their connections almost as if they were different songs and play them together.

His control is amazing, so fluid, how does he get that snappy tone? Is it just force or what?

Not sure if anyone has already answered this.
But yes, it is fan fretted. 🙂
Lol yeah he's kinda glue guy in vortex but he takes the lead lines and roman or Vlad become the glue guy in other songs, it just varies 😂😂
You should checkout the Copycat bass play though.
I would love to see you do more of their songs. Older recommendations would be to actually do Pisces (lots of two hand), teacher teacher, on the top, Perennial. I look forward to more!
Have you reviewed omific 2 basses and a drummer?

How about beggers dance. By jinjer
Expecting Dimmu Borgir's old bassist "Vortex" 😂
Check out his right hand technique,
Hello 🤘 Does anyone know how to achieve this incredible tone Eugene uses?
Ne Obliviscaris please?? :)
Don't know if there's a guitarist/bassist combo more in sync than Roman and Eugene are at the moment. Like they were meant to play together.
Instant like on this one
Gotta check out his copycat playthrough
“Can’t play a G chord”- *plays Schism* lol
OMG I thought this as well 🤣🤣🤣, total accident. Great catch - this made my day.
was thinking it sounded like that 😄
Not into the vocals but the musicians in this band are great
