How to raise or lower your Alfa 75, Milano or Alfetta.

  • Hello guys! While the second season of this 75 is not available, let me share some videos about all things.
In this video i discovered that i have a lot of play on the left tortion bar. 1cm to be exact. it is really a lot.
And that's why the measurements whore always changing.
So, in the future i have to see if the play is in the bars or the spline holes. And with that decide on new bars or a adjustable kit.

It is in fact a awesome car. Very comfortable and the quality of build is very good.
But I had bad luck with mine.
After repairing the engine head I now know it burns oil by the piston rings.

The way I have always done it is to remove the torsion bar from the rear using the Alfa removal tool. Once the bar is withdrawn, clean the splines thoroughly with a wire brush and smear copper grease onto them, in case they have to come out again. Then, with the bar removed, set the lower wishbone (A-Arm) to the required height and then re-insert the bar from the rear until it slides in with a small amount of resistance. There are a different number of splines at either end of the bar, by the way.

You made a lot of work for yourself here as it is not necessary to remove the lower arm from the chassis. All that is required is to disconnect the front ARB, lower damper mount and lower joint from the upright. This unloads the torsion bar which is then dissengaged from both splines by sliding it REARWARDS about 50mm. There is a plastic bung at the rear of the xmember, which, once prised out, gives access to the rear end of the torsion bar. It will be noticed that there is a tapped hole (M10x1.25) in the end bar which can be used as a simple puller. Move the arm up or down (still fixed to the chassis) to the desired height, then, by trial and error offer the torsion bar into place. It may not go first time so rotate it one spline at a time. It will be possible to re engage it whatever angle the lower arm is set at. No need for paint marks and NEVER 'centre pop' a spring, it will eventually snap! I hope this helps.

Hello. Thank you for your tips.. this video was may first attempt on this car, after the torsion bar broke I was able to do it almost the way you said it. Off camera I tried to tune the bar In do many possible positions but always ended up too low or normal. Some say only the 1.8 bars are strong enough to lower it properly. I'm not worried about that now, I have the engine to fix and it will be quite expensive

Interesting Alfa 75 videos, also good information for alfetta Gt/GTV....I would sugest that before you remove the tortion bar you first mark some how (punch, paint?) the splines of the bar to the fitting so that you can see how many splines you have moved and which direction...much more difficult if you add in 20 years worth of rust!

Hello. Thank you very much. And thank you for watching my videos. Yes it is much easier with a mark. Aldo it has a mark not very visible on camera. However of camera I did fiddle with it a lot but with no result. I have play on the body splines, so.. not very good.

Just came across this video of adjusting height on Alfa 75.
You can not adjust height of suspension by only adjusting one end of the torsion bar.
Because there are a different number of splines at each end, you have to mark a spline at each end as a reference and then move both ends the same number
of times. one spline adjusts height by 1.5mm, so if you want to lower car 5mm you'd have to move 3 splines at both ends, in the same direction to get a height
    drop of 4.5mm.
You might know this already since this was done last year.
    Just thought i'd mention it.
    Anyway, Good work.

Hello. Yes, during and after this video I did experiment a lot with that before doing the videos. I have the experience in other cars that use this technology. But this one, no matter the combination it's always the same drop on hight... Even with the new torsion bars, I really took my time and I did try everything. On this bars, for the 1.6 ie works just like this... I can understand what you are saying and it makes perfect sense but in every combination is hider too hi or too low with no small difference on measurement. But now I am used to it and will not mess with it for now.. bigger problems ahead...
Thank you very much for watching!

Hi, I know you are in no hurry to do suspension in near future with all the other work you have on.
I was looking through my notes on adjusting suspension.
So, if you fit torsion bars as you did and take measurement from suspension arm to wheel arch, so that both sides are the same.
You then put car on the floor, making sure both tyres have the same pressure. Then you take a measurement from the floor to the wheel arch. Then if you want to raise or lower car 25mm you have to then move both ends of torsion bar 16 splines (clockwise or anti clockwise depending up or down) This will give you a different measurement, when you measure from suspension arm to wheel arch.
it's a shame they didn't put a mark on the end for the bars, where the first splines front and back are in line with each other. This would have been a good reference to start with. It would tell you that you have the maximum adjustment from that point.
Anyway good luck with all your work.

Interesting video but why did you wish to lower the front of the car on the Alfa 75? The Alfetta/75 front suspension is setup correctly for height at the factory. As has been discussed by Alfisti many times, lowering the front suspension using the torsion bars without first raising the length of the front uprights (by buying and using extended upper link pins or modified lenghthened uprights) then the roll centre of the front of the car will go below ground level which is not good and you will also get more negative camber on the wheels.
