And Pizza (Greek Pitza pie) is old as Grecia (Greek). Its just a wheat pie with cheese and oil on top. That is Not Italian either. @@feetgoaroundfullflapsC actually no. yes, tomato comes from america but it wasn't the tomato we know now. it was a yellow berry. that's why in italy tomatoes are called "pomodoro" wich means gold apple. The tomato we know now was crossed with other plants in the region of campania (in the agro nocerino) and only then it was a red berry with sweet falvor. Then the napolitan created the first pizza by using the pitsa (a baked bread that was etruscan), mozzarella (the tipical italian cheese) and the tomato sauce.

      By the way i'm not saying that spanish didn't discovered tomatoes. that was a really great spanish discovery brought to europe by cortez and italy would not be the same without it. I'm just saying that italians modified it a little so that the fruit can have that bright red color. And they didn't even do that because they wanted to eat it. until 1280 everyone in italy tought that tomatoes where toxic and the plants where used only for aesthetics. Tomatoes where ornamental plant. italians made them red only because they wanted them to be cuter.

      I mean, technically Columbus did find the small parts of South America without ever realizing or caring that he found a new land, which led to other voyagers coming to America and actually realizing they found a new land. That was the only good thing to come out of this. Columbus was no hero. He was just the start of a chain reaction. Really, we should've made a Holiday about Amerigo Vespucci, the voyager who played such a major role in the Age of Discovery, America was literally named after him!

    Actually, Adam, there might be one fact in which you overlooked when it came to Columbus' occupation of Hispaniola: that diseases in which Columbus and his men brought exterminated the majority of the Taíno. Even with mass slaughter campaigns executed by swords, armor, and guns, it would be impossible for a smaller group of men to exterminate thousands of indigenous people with that alone. More indirect yet equally lethal factors, especially disease-inflicting pathogens, would have contributed more to the Taínos' extinction than sheer violence alone. Simply put, the Taíno lived in a rather isolated society when livestock bore negligible presence. Animals can carry diseases that evolve to infect humans as well, but through exposure to such diseases, humans can develop immunity. The Taíno were never exposed to such prerequisite conditions nor diseases and thus did not evolve to acquire such immunity against diseases from Columbus' homeland. Columbus lived in an area that traditionally cultivated livestock as a food and fiber source. His people bore the uses as well as the diseases from those animals. Several diseases ravaged those people, yet some managed to survive and develop biological resistance. Compared to the Taíno, Columbus' party had a pathological advantage. When a people not previously exposed to a certain disease for a long enough period of time to acquire immunity becomes afflicted with it, they die. It is noted that 90% of the Taíno died from smallpox by 1548, although killings, enslavement, and rape did constitute another 10% of the brutality. Professor Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" can indubitably confirm this.

    • @Sarah-yd9gt
      @Sarah-yd9gt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Columbus was not in charge for very long on the ground in Hispaniola. Excluding the Spanish themselves, Columbus was responsible for the deaths of a few thousand natives and mostly through trying to enslave them but having them die of diseases on the way back to Europe. The Spanish crews and settlers hated the Italian Columbus. They tried to mutiny on the first voyage and gave him continuous problems until they drove him away.
      First voyage, Columbus was only in the Carribean from late October 1492 until mid January 1493. The men Columbus left behind after his first voyage died and their settlement burnt to the ground.
      The only time Columbus was in charge on the ground in Hispaniola was during his second visit. Columbus returned to the Americas from November 3, 1493 until March 10, 1496. By the end of 1494, two-thirds of the Spanish settlers were dead and the settlement was in chaos. In late 1494, the Spanish monarchs were told there was no gold. Most of the rest of the time Columbus was sick.
      Columbus was not in charge in Hispaniola during his third or fourth trips. On August 19, 1498 (third voyage), Columbus arrived back in Hispaniola only to find the remaining settlers were in rebellion. He was taken back to Spain in chains. The chains were at his request. He was put on trial, his governorship was revoked, and he was thrown in jail. He made sure to wear clothing to show off the scars made by the chains.
      He went on a fourth voyage. The king and queen had forbidden him from even visiting Hispaniola, but Columbus went there anyway because he had been stuck in Jamaica for a year. The current governor of the Spanish colony tried unsuccessfully to get the natives to kill Columbus and then fought Columbus himself.
      The brutalities of the Spanish colonies in the Americas were due to subsequent lesser-known governors. Columbus, a guy in charge for a bit and then thrown in jail, wasn't representative. A proper analysis would take a sampling of the later governors and discuss how they behaved towards the natives.

      Actually he believed he was in India, the "real discoverer" was Amerigo Vespucci, that discovered Columbus reached two new continents. So they named the contintents Americas after him. Yeah the vikings reached them first but they didn't stay there for long and didn't say to the world that they discovered new lands, probably they didn't even know where they were. Sincerely I don't understand why people don't praise Amerigo Vespucci (italian too) instead of Columbus. But probably cartographers are less cool than explorers. Anyway Columbus behaved like a man of his time, and at least catholics tried to convert slaves and native americans instead of just killing them because believed they were evil like calvinists did....

    While most of what he said is right, "never stepped foot in America" depends on what you consider America. In many countries, "America" means all of the New World. Also, the country obviously didn't exist at the time, but if he means that he never stepped foot on what would later be America, I'm pretty certain we owned Cuba at one point.

      At least when I was in school, it sort of goes in tiers. When you're tiny, Columbus was a great hero who discovered America while trying to find India! By the time you hit 5th grade (about 10-11 years old) the "Well, actually" begins. Well, actually, the Vikings made it to Vinland about 500 years earlier. Well, actually, Columbus wasn't trying to prove the Earth was round so much as prove he could get to India cheaper and faster. We didn't find out about the raping and pillaging of natives until High School and even then, it's only the Honors and AP classes. I can only assume that it's because before then, they don't think students are mature enough to handle the truth and nuance. Or something.
      There's a similar cycle with our stories about the first Thanksgiving and our founding fathers. It's all folk stories during your formative years, and then they slowly break out the Well, Actually.
      If you're lucky.
      I should point out that I'm in my mid-30's, so I hope it's different now, but when I was in school in the 80's and 90's, that's absolutely how it went. I can imagine some older teachers still sticking to the sanitized version.

      The Belgians were the only ones who had a norm of cutting off hands, while on the other hand any other settling power, including Spain, banned that and created laws against slave abuse.

    • @kenabbott8585
      @kenabbott8585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He didn't get to that part because it wasn't true.
      Columbus set that rule for the SPANISH. Spanish nobles used connections and bribes to get appointed to head Economendiendas--basically, plantation towns, to grow tobacco or sugar. Columbus was the governor, and these guys would make a fortune and then skip out on the taxes that it was his job to collect. So he started up that little system as a reminder.
      Keep in mind these guys made a fortune by exploiting the shit out of the natives, and Columbus was only upset because he didn't get his cut--but nonetheless, he wasn't doing the old King-of-Belgium thing.

  • @ignaciogamboa3302

    To be fair, to people outside the U.S.A., Columbus did discover America, as for many people America refers to the American Continent not the US. Also, Columbus thought the Earth was smaller due to an existing map from an Italian cartographer, Tuscanelli or something of the sort, which showed the Earth as 8 thousand kilometres smaller at the equator.

  • @matthewwestra6079
    @matthewwestra6079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Except Columbus was popular even before Irving. Hence the reason we named our capital the District of Columbia already in 1790. The Italians encouraged it but Columbus was always a hero until we started caring more about the Indigenous Peoples in the last half century.

      You do know that Puerto Rico is part of the US, right? Also, there are other U.S. islands in the Caribbean which Columbus visited. You reversed it, tho. The U.S.A. a.k.a. U.S. or America where what the world refers to as Americans come from is perfectly described by either name. When you "travel to America" everyone knows where you are going. What Columbus could never claim is that he discovered it when people were already living there and Europeans had visited hundreds of years earlier. He rediscovered it at a time when more Europeans had better ships and were able to map it.
