  • In this video I compare my 1970 Bach Stradivarius 37 with my 1953 LA Olds Recording. These are both really great trumpets that have vastly different designs.
I am using a Lotus 3M mouthpiece in nickel.

Fun fact: My favorite jazz trumpeter Booker Little played an Olds Recording and a Mt. Vernon Bach.

I have a 1970 Bach strad too and also have the same black elastics holding the 3rd valve slide in. 😃

I love my Recording but I find that you really do have to use the trigger because the trumpet has some dodgy intonation. The upper register is killer though! While the 37 has great intonation and gets stiff in the upper register.
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

I play a 37, but I miss my Olds recording. I feel like most olds (The Recording, Super and Mendez) have thick core on the ‘softs’.
The 37 does everything but (imho) the Olds has more character.

I think the Bach gets the nod, in my opinion. Some extra frequencies in the sound, maybe?

Prefer the Bach core and resonance. I have a Bach1965 37 bell new old stock lacquer Bb 5:43 cornet sn# 30836 and 1967 lacquer trumpet sn# 39773. You sound great on both horns

There is some tuning issues with the Olds and the Copper bell is not quite as bright as the Strad although the olds was known for its cutting power in its day, I think the Olds is a bit more Mouthpiece sensitive as well but still nice to have in a collection, I did use a 70's Olds Custom which was a good horn except for the plastic valve guides they introduced in around that time, they wear out really quick and change the resonance of the instrument.

For me the Olds trumpet wins in every test. The Bach is an all around good trumpet although nothing all that appealing. The Bach checks all the boxes, but I would never buy another plain old Bach.

I can get the sound I want the easiest on a silverplated ML BACH standard weight with a 72 bell. jw

Olds wins big time. Bach sounds harsh.

Bach much brighter and seems easier for you to push more.
