I grew up with this as a child of the 70`s it was magic (never did me any harm) , my children grew up with the telly tubbies (if that's the correct spelling) who couldn't even speak English, so in fairness, we have not progressed....long live Brian Cant, a top bloke.....

Love this. I have such fond memories of Brian Cant, but it’s also fascinating to see a young Tony Robinson at work. And it boggles the mind how they got through that song! Not only do you have to remember the words, it takes brilliant timing. I feel like I’ve just had a workout just by listening to it!

You know, looking at these clips from those dark and distant days of the '70s makes me very emotional. I was a kid when I was watching this. Many of my family were still alive. Now? Time can be cruel. if I had the power, I wish I could turn back time, and never leave it. I hate this society we live in now, seriously. I must stop watching these clips from my past, just makes me feel even more depressed. Yet I can't help myself. Lol.

to learn about our world today
    Hamble and Dapple the horse
who no one remembers of course,
    but I do,
and I will always remember you
so now you have passed on....
    Did your family know
    that the amazing stuff
    you did
    is all wrapped up
    within this little kid,
from play school and play away
I lived with you from day to day
you taught me right from wrong
and also how to sing along....
I heard the news today OH BOY!
How I cried, They told me that Brian Cant had died.

Now great TV for bored adults. I was a boy/teenager when this was first dropped onto BBC2 and immediately "got it". The whole thing's a send up - these actors are all about larging it up, with the bloody cheek of being paid licence fees to do it. How sweet it was.
Brian Cant was hysterical - should have been Tom Baker's successor as Dr Who. Bite on the quality of his Trumpton narrations, pick a ripe snippette of Dappledown Farm, luxuriate in Play Away's masterclass of whimsy.
    Enjoy.

He had already been in Doctor Who twice. Once in the William Hartnell story The Daleks Master Plan(one of the surviving episodes still exists)and in the Patrick Troughton story The Dominators which exists in its entirety although sadly Brian is killed off rather quickly but you can still tell from the scenes that are left he was a fine actor. Yeah I can see he would have been a good Doctor Who.

This is so good on such a number of levels. I still come back if I need cheering up. I love how Tony's laugh causes Toni to almost break down. Also, the fact that these guys had probably one rehearsal before recording, just shows what professionals they are 🙂

Yeah, this is presumably recorded multicamera as live. It's an incredible performance, really.
