The fact that Titan is "bathed in a thick, orange fog" is the reason that the extra-terrestrials that evolved there invented the foghorn before they invented the wheel.

One thing I've not heard anyone address re: potential life on Titan - fossils. Water freezes so solid on Titan, its strength is comparable to granite. That means that if there is life on Titan, any fossils that may exist there could possibly be contained in ice instead of rock. I think that would be a cool thing to see (pun fully intended).

If we get a drone on Titan and have a clear enough time to get a picture of Saturn floating above it, massive and just hanging there, then sci-fi artwork, video games and movies are no longer gonna suffer from having that kinda thing in the background. It'll finally be grounded in reality for our brains, we will finally see it and accept it. It'll be up there as one of the greatest photos ever taken in space. I can only think of maybe 5 that will be comparable.

Titan is the most intriguing moon in our solar system! Saturn's moon Titan is so Earth like, yet so alien at the same time. Like Earth, Titan's atmosphere primarily consists of nitrogen, and also like Earth, Titan has lakes and rivers, albeit of ammonia and methane rather than water. This particular moon is also a hybrid body, like Ganymede, it's a moon made of both ice and rock on the ground. Living things native to Titan would probably be argon based organisms reliant on methane.

    The Sirens of Titan
I was drawn by the sirens of Titan
    Carried along by their call
Seeking for a way to enlighten
Searching for the sense of it all
Like a kiss on the wind
I was thrown to the stars
Captured and ordered in the army of Mars
Marching to the sound of the drum in my head
    I followed the call
    Only to be Malachi Constant
I thought I came to this Earth
Living in the heart of the moment
With the riches I gained at my birth
But here in the yellow and blue of my days
    Wander the endless Mercurian caves
Watching for the signs the harmoniums make
    The words on the wall
I was drawn by the sirens of Titan
And so I came in the end
    Under the shadow of Saturn
With statues and birds for my friends
Finding a home at the end of my days
Looking around, I've only to say
I was the victim of a series of accidents
    As are we all.
    Al Stewart
from the album Modern Times, 1975
based on the novel The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Perhaps those sand dunes could have an organic component. Imagine a hydrocarbon based spherical lifeform, like living pearls or miniature tarballs of life, exuding water-ice. You wold get piles of tiny 'bearings' mildly repelling each other. It would take very little breeze to create dunes in such material. There are various kid toys of granular 'sand' that if wobbled flows and ripples into various patterns.

  • @Kelnx
    @Kelnx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I really have a hard time believing that life might evolve that far out, and also find it unlikely to be anything other than carbon-based with water as the primary solvent. The problem isn't just chemistry in general, where water seems to be incredibly unique (it has some analogues, but the chemistry for an imagined biology gets weird), but also energy density and the availability of heavier and heavier elements needed for exotic biology.
A place like Titan, for instance, is not only much colder, but it also lacks any appreciable sunlight of any wavelength hitting its surface. So the only energy available for any sort of biology is thermal from what little it can get between what makes it through from the Sun, radioactive decay within the moon, and tidal forces from Saturn, and it's not much. The evolution of life has always seemed to revolve around energy, and even on Earth where there is comparably tons of it provided by the Sun, life still came up with all kinds of incredible ways to conserve it.
It seems to me that for exotic forms of life to exist (and by exotic, I mean based on different chemistry), it would require much more complexity to "make do" with what is available. I think I'd have an easier time believing that exotic biology could evolve in much hotter places than Earth, due to the increased energy available, than out in the colder reaches of a star system.
If I had to guess, the reality will likely be that life can only evolve using Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, Phosphorus, and Sulfur, all but one of which are the top 10 most abundant elements in the universe. That liquid water must be present in sufficient quantities for sufficient periods of time and that it must have cycles. That a planet must be large enough to maintain a certain amount of atmosphere that also allows sufficient spectra of the light of its host star to reach the surface, and small enough that its gravity is not a hindrance to the formation of life, and also have a relatively strong magnetic field. And that the energy density provided by its host star is not only enough to heat its surface to maintain liquid water, but also to provide enough light energy for life itself to take hold by chemical means such as photosynthesis and other chemical reactions on the planet's surface and in its atmosphere.

Research is not work for me, it's fun, so I'm just bringing what I've learned to the content. Then I just assume there are others out there interested too, and deliver it in such a way that is helpful whether it's for people looking to learn, fall asleep or ASMR etc.. Earth oceans change appearance drastically during algae blooms and when larger organisms congregate for mating purposes. Early explorers described the whole ocean changing color as far as the eye could see when such things happened.
Perhaps that is the cause of the changing patches on Titan's lakes?

Back to Titan in 2034. I cannot wait. Cassini-Huygens was the definitive answer to the criticism of "Why waste money on a space program". I recall downloading thousands of raw images sent from Cassini and Huygens. What a magnificent mission. What astonishing data.
In future decades our space probes will become more advanced, more flexible and more autonomous. I would hope more numerous too. I am anxiously awaiting the exploration of the oceans of Europa and Enceladus. Humanity's first interplanetary submarine mission. Wow.
Surely we have both the ability and the imagination to 'ramp up' our exploration of our very near cosmic neighbors? Our universe will always be stranger and more spectacular place than we could ever possibly imagine. You just can't make this stuff up.

Could it be possible for a form of life to develop based upon the energy and chemistry that exist on Titan?
I mean, sure it’s cold to us, but who’s to say life forms couldn’t exist, drinking nice cool glasses of iced ethane tea as they hang out in the warm yellow sky-glow on the shore of their methane lake? (Or I guess it could be some sort of simple, microscopic stuff if you want to be boring)
Of course there’s a point when you’re getting so cold that chemical reactions and such become harder and harder etc, but is Titan in that range?
Is there anything absolutely preventing some utterly distinct life system from forming there?
Edit : oh, he mentioned this at the very end.
I’d be interested in more detail if anyone has it

    • @raidermaxx2324
      @raidermaxx2324 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

its not just the cold, its the problem of liquid methane and ethane, and how it works compared to water, as a necessary medium to stir the chemicals in a "chemical soup" to kickstart life.. because of the less viscous nature of liquid methane compared to water, which works really well, is yet to be determined..

You see John, Titan is home to the Methane Men and the shiny bits that are seen on the surface of the liquid are their ships sailing the methane seas.

I'm curious to see how exactly a drone on Titan would work! Surely they'd have to fine some sort of way for the drone to fly itself autonomously, as the signals from Earth would take hours to get there! Much like how a signal to Mars from Earth takes about 40 minutes at Mars' closest point, and over an hour, from Mars' farthest point.
Either way, I'm excited to see we're hopefully gonna be going back to one of the most spectacular and mysterious moons of our gorgeous Solar System! Brilliant video as always!

You would have to anticipate day lengths and also use maps to anticipate terrain. I don't think there are any high mountains or high winds, but obviously there are liquid features that would have to be avoided.

idea: what if there are two different life forms on Titan, one on the surface, one in the subsurface ocean. They would not know of each other's existence

Well as to the very low erosion rate, it would make sense that a liquid with lower viscosity and density wouldn't be able to erode solids the way water does. Especially if the liquid can coagulate with the solids.

10:47 this looks like a dried up lake bed, smooth rounded stones and long expanse of sand and dust… this picture could have easily been taken of an earth desert. I LOVE when we find similarities to our own planet on alien worlds. There’s a certain beauty in nature’s repetitive well, nature…😉
