    So nice to have obd2 and viewable data on scanners. You could isolate to a rich condition both banks in minutes if that was obd2.

    Hi Brian , I had all those symptoms ten years after retirement this morning till I had my coffee , felt just like the truck, leaks no compression sticking valves and rusted out , but after watching your vid feel much better thanks AL.

      I loved mine! We purchased it dirt cheap due to bad heads. Fixed it up and had oversized (very wide) tires/rims. Thing ran amazing until the engine finally gave up about 80k later...

    fuel reg. toast, yup good old ethanol in fuels with incompatible rubber. tell me that wasn't a planned obsolescence move ;)

    with obd1 there can be 1000 things wrong under the hood and never a check engine light

      OBDII isn't much better and never has been, I hate to tell you! it cries wolf often still too late and never guides anyone to the real underlying issues(right to current day late November 2020 garbage).

    I wouldn't have wasted my time with switching the fuel regulator i would just coyote swapped it called it good been quicker easier safer cooler

      Quicker, easier? Have you even done a swap. It is neither quicker or easier. The motor is worth more then the car.

    Bfate is gorgeous mbbam.. All of this also aplies to 5.0 Lincoln Mark 11Vs of that era as I went through this same thing with mine circa 1992 when I got home and it was doing all of the above before I threw enough new parts at it to rectify the problems.... OBD1..me no speakie caveman no more..

    I have a 87 Chevy celebrity 2.8 multi-port fuel injection basically the same engine that came in a Chevy Cavaliers too with obd1.
    My question is how do I adjust or know if i have my throttle position sensor set right on the throttle body ??
    It's a pain without taken my obd2 an using that to dial one in butt i can't do that on this old stuff.
    The old sensor went out completely an wouldn't start or run the car anymore so i replaced it but now that it runs I have this cut up problem at full throttle an then sometimes this high 1500 rpm that will start by it's self an I have to turn car off put it in clear flood mode an start it an then let off pedal an it will run an idle back down to 900rpm like it should do .
    So I know I have this thing out of adjustment or something but I don't know how to fix that or how to test

      If you can borrow a Snap On MT-2500 , " Red Brick " scan tool , the TPS voltage will be displayed . I believe the setting is .055 volts . However , that tool only shows .054 or .056 . Either is acceptable . You can also make a jumper to go between the harness and TPS or buy a replacement or used TPS connector and strip the wires back to connect a DVOM and read the voltage . The wires go into the harness plug . You can also take the reading off the plug on back of the computer . I think it's easier to find the MT-2500 . I just did my 1987 Celebrity 2.8L . I also have an Action CP-9690 scan tool that displays TPS volts in data when running. But it won't show it when you adjust it with the key on , engine off . KOEO . Also , most of those TPS can be put in without removing the throttle body . I have had some that were " wider " that would not squeeze in .

    Are you just that tough or do you have a secret for pulling those wires off without getting shocked? I remember my dad using a screwdriver to try to find a defective cable on a 70's model car and got a series of jolts because his finger was accidentally on the shaft of the screwdriver. That made me paranoid and I have always turned the engine off and pulled wires off individually to inspect for damage.

      Kinda both and neither. I wasn't being shocked, but I've had it enough times from 220V living in India, putting up old school Christmas lights, livestock fences (don't pee anywhere near one in the dark) and of course from ignition wires that I'm not afraid of it, but experienced enough to know how to avoid it too. I gave the arc a path to the exhaust stud. If I held it up for the camera- I would have been the path. Lousy shot, but comfortable tendons and fingers.

    Hello Brian... new sub here, I am currently in the process of pulling the motor of my boy’s WRX STI, and was stuck when I got to those two pesky studs that go through the bellhousing into the block. Per your old video, that explained a lot, thank you! Question: have you ever tried to remove those studs so you can simply lift the motor straight up? Thanks very much in advance. Scotty

      Thanks Scott! You're welcome, I haven't tried to remove them. They're stuck in there good. The radiator and fan assembly is easy to remove and is faster if you take the time to lift the engine/trans about 3" and support it to clear the motor mount studs to go forward.

    I had a 1987 Bronco II XLT from new, I traded it in after 4 years because it was rusting out like crazy and scary to drive in evasive manouvers! Mine was a 5 speed manual also, very scary to put this thing up on 2 wheels at 120km/h near Toronto Airport, gladly it came down okay, but with the rust and the instability I had enough.

    Brian what is your opinion on the value of a tech being ASE certified? Is it worth the time?

      Hey Steven, in my experience it's great for working at a dealership or big shop etc. if you're independent it likely won't do you much good. I got a job at a dealership and that was basically the whole interview for me. Most of my other jobs didn't care as long as I turned out good work and didn't have come backs.

    If you own one of these and love it and plan to keep it. Buy a Holley Terminator X for it. It upgrades the computer and diagnostics. It will run 10X better and way more power and fuel economy.

    I have a 1990 bii and its leaking fuel from the connection on the pressure regulator, its different then the previous year models but do you know where i could get a new line? if they even sell one? cant find anything on the fuel line, its braided

    when opening things like that use tin snips or diagonal cutters and cut the top end of roll pinched section every 3/8" inch or so, then screwdriver/pliers to fold it open, no heat no damage to diaphragm and better diagnosis :)

    I was driving my 1987 Celebrity 2.8L when it died with no warning . I pulled over . On a crank , I smelled gas ( NOT from White Castle ) . I found gas running out of the throttle body . I suspected the fuel pressure regulator . I traced the vacuum hose . The FPR is under the intake plenum on that 2.8L . I put a vacuum pump on the line and as soon as I pumped , it drew in gas . The diaphragm was ripped . I have an inline , clear gas filter on the vacuum pump to keep foreign ( or American ) crud from going in there . The injector rails have to be spread to replace that FPR on that 2.8L .

      Yeah, GM made some tricky hard ones. The spider injector models of the late 90's were hidden inside the intake manifold with no vacuum hose at all.

    What brand of rubber gloves do you use? I use 'Goof Off' for a variety of projects around the house, and it dissolves the cheap, black nitrile gloves I use in no time flat (WalMart Specials).

    Brian . 2001 grand cherokee has no power sometimes parking on hill. Must hold the break same time so keep won't roll whole in reverse. A sometimes shuts off. Any ideas?

      Those have an idle learn procedure that if you don't nurse it right and let it idle learn for a few minutes after a battery change or leaving your lights on, they'll do that intermittently and more so when humidity, or temp changes or you have an elevation change. I see that the most. The other thing I see or saw on those is a dirty throttle body and or idle air control valve or an EGR valve pintle that was too carboned up to close all the way.
