The thing about The Exorcist that makes it so powerful is that it's not only scary; it's disturbing. It doesn't just "scare" you; it OFFENDS you. It's almost emotionally unsettling to a degree. Yeah, the film has some of the most shocking scenes ever put on screen, but its underlying, documentary-style message of faith, guilt and good-vs- evil just pulls you in and doesn't quickly let go. When you combine that with the superb writing/acting/cinematography/sound/effects, there's no horror film like it. You can quickly get over a jump scare, but The Exorcist does more than that; It stays with you (whether you like it or not Lol)

The scene where she is flopping from sitting to lying was so intensive that halfway through the shot the girl's back broke, the screams of "Please! It hurts! Make it stop!" are absolutely 100% genuine.
I saw this movie when I was 6 (I still hate my older brother for showing me this movie at that age) and now, nearly 23 years later I still find myself wary and scared when it comes to this movie
The scariest scene to me has always been probably its most subtle horror moment: when Father Karras walks back into the bedroom and sees his mother sitting on Regan's bed just staring at him silently. Freaking terrifying shot if you ask me
Subtle horror for me , always trumps jump scares . Seeing something in the background like hereditary or some Korean horror movie always gets me .The dream sequence from prince of darkness or the disturbing dream from whistle and I'll come .
@Billy Batts Karras' dream is chilling. The lack of music and the only sounds used make it feel like a real nightmare.

Have you seen "Legion"?
The acting, the camera shots, the lighting, the framing, the story telling, the makeup and practical effects were way ahead of their time, this movie is a true masterpiece.
Fun fact: Max Von Sydow who plays Father Mirren was actually in his early 40s but had makeup done to make him look much older
It's crazy that when you look him up now that he's old, he looks so close to how he looked with old man makeup in the movie!

There's a movie, 'The Keep' with a 40-something Ian McKellen who has age make-up on. Same thing. The make up was so good he looked similar to how he actually looks now.
All this to say, Back to the Future was just mean. LOL.
There is only one movie I have ever seen where Max Von Sydow was young: The Seventh Seal.
So I can confirm that he wasn't born old.

"You're gonna die up there" was a *really* unnerving line, as she said it to the ASTRONAUT.
The Ninth Configuration shows (unofficially) what happened to that astronaut later. It was the writer’s intention that it was the same character.

VERY broadly, Pazuzu is the demon-god of the sky, flying things and deadly winds, so Pazuzu would certainly be in a position to decide if an astronaut were to die.

Fun fact: the reason why Linda Blair's screams seemed so realistic when she was thrashing in the bed was because the device she was rigged to had a mechanical failure and she sustained fractures in her back that later turned into scoliosis. The shot you see in the movie is her actually fracturing her back which is why she keeps saying "make it stop, make it stop"

I absolutely love the dialogue in the scene above. Very nicely put foreshadowing that demonstrates just how powerful the demon truly was. The playfulness and outright evil it exuded, doing exactly what Merrin said it would do. Mix truth with the lies. Chilling!
Disturbing lines dude ... So the demon always knew Karras will die and most important... Did Karras's soul get salvation ? I don't know men ... Awesome masterpiece about faith !
The dialogue is top quality, its one of the things that separates The Exorcist from all other supernatural horror movies ... and praise to Linda Blair, her acting practically brought the devil to life in this wonderful dialogue with Karras ... no other child actors can play scary children remotely as well as Blair, they can look eerie but once they are require to interact with another person they lose all their horror effects to cuteness, Linda Blair is probably the one child actor who excelled beyond just looking eerie and scary ... she became the devil in her laughing, amused smirks etc ....

Exorcist 3 is a really corny horror movie full of bad acting and cheesy movie tropes ... it feels more like a parody of horror movies than a horror movie itself...
When she says, "You're going to die up there." she's talking to the astronaut. And you mentioned a few times about being glad she was tied down, but don't you remember when the detective looks up from his car at night at her window and sees a shape move behind the curtains? She had been "tied down" then too.
Yeah it was all a game to the demon.
I wouldn’t say it’s the “scariest” but I think it’s the best. Not just because it’s scary or spooky, but because the narrative is so perfect and all the characters development it’s so well done. The movie grounds the “demon” in such a realistic way that’s is mentally exhausting watch the entire process.
And I think Linda Blair is more than fantastic, she created a new standard in movies, everything related to “possession” is based on her performance. All the three actors were nominated for the Oscar
especially since the practical effects don't hold up everytime I watch it I always end up laughing at the effects, and since I am an occultist how they portray demons lmao

A lot of the Effects, Camera-Work & Acting in this movie is better than any other movie before the time. By the time this movie came to my Country it was nearly a decade later & it's Effects were still considered spectacular, as far as I'm concerned anyway
Btw, An "Occultist" is a lost, invalidated, unhappy, lonely, bored, wounded little boy/girl who wasn't allowed to cry or else!!

Fun fact: Ellen Burstyn, the mother in this movie, also appears years 27 later in Requiem for a Dream for arguably her other best role (which I know has been requested already and this is a not so subtle plug) ;)
Requim is one of those rare movies that is too good and too well done that I don't want to watch it again because it weighs so heavily on your very soul.
Gardens of the Night is another.

This movie was absolutely terrifying when it came out. My dad told me that he snuck into a drive-in theater when he was 15 to watch this movie, and it scared the bejesus out of him. When he went back home at night, he was the only one in the house. He turned on the TV in the living room, and a commercial for this movie came on. When the theme started playing, he nearly shit himself out of fear. He spent the rest of the night with the family dog leashed to the couch and a kitchen knife next to him.

Saw this when I was twelve and didn't sleep barely for 3 days. A horrifying film, fittingly
i can relate. i saw it when i was 8 (big mistake) at a friends house. after the movie was done my friend and his parents left so i had to walk back to my empty home (my parents went out to the supermarket) and i remember staring at my front door for 5 straight minutes, considering my options. stay outside while it got dark, or go inside and wait alone for my parents to come back.
i remember i ran upstairs as fast as i could, grabbed the first vhs i could find (turned out to be 4 episodes or jim hensons " dinosaurs") and staring at the tv, not wanting to close my eyes because each time i would see that god damn devil guy.
still gives me chills how frikin scared i was XD
The thing with The Exorcist is that it’s not just a fantastic horror film, it’s a great movie period.

So true-- everything is brilliant, every aspect of the production was done with care. From the photography and sound design to the fascinating character dynamics/relationships ... it's simply top notch cinema that happens to be one of the most chilling movies ever put on celluloid.
@@eduardo_corrochio there’s something great about 70s movies they just feel like documentaries honestly they are slower paced I noticed but once you get to the 3rd act of a 70s film that’s when everything happens and shit explodes
@@user-ev3lh1uy1m Yes. The 70s seemed like an exceptional era of movie-making. There was a lot going on, and many different kinds of wonderful films being created. Actually I have to include the late 60s in there because we had stuff like Midnight Cowboy, Planet of the Apes, and Rosemary's Baby ... so good.

"What we do in the shadows" by Taika Waititi is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the dead. a must watch

After all these years, this is still the only movie that actually scared me.

This is ultimately the story of Father Karras' redemption.
A man suffering a crisis of faith, who is a priest?!?!?!?!?!!!?
He regains absolute faith at the moment he tells Regan's mom, "No", when she asked him if he thought her daughter would die.
He follows through with his sacrifice, which not only saves the child's life,
but also his soul.
Heartbreaking, and beautiful.

Here's another fun fact about the sound effects of The Exorcist ... The film's director, William Friedkin, was unhappy with the work the regular Foley artists were doing. He then found Gonzalo Gavira (the Mexican sound effects magician) after seeing El Topo (a cult film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky). He did all the foley sound effects forThe Exorcist in a couple of days simply by using mundane items that he brought in a garbage bag and using whatever he had on hand. The Film won an Oscar for best sound that year.
Including the horrific sound of Reagan's neck turning: fingers on a leather wallet.
The most tense moments having no score at all adds to the realism of those scenes

Speaking of sound, the voice of the demon was done by Mercedes McCambridge, whom Orson Welles once called "the world's greatest living radio actress." She had already won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress opposite Best Actor winner Broderick Crawford in "All the King's Men" (1949), which also won Best Picture. She was also nominated but did not win for "Giant" (1956), one of James Dean's great films.

I think the scariest thing was the issues they had filming this movie. The actors were genuinely scared because of the accidents, deaths and issues revolving around filming. The little girl was shielded from a lot of the makeup and wasn’t allowed to watch it to protect her. They also filmed her going down the stairs and was on wires and on the re-cut version of this film they included that when they had the technology to remove the lines. So good. This film knew how to build tension, the abrupt cuts, minimal music and just the sound design was really brilliant.
That clown you see occasionally behind you is creepier than any horror movie I have ever seen!

So Chris (mom) sets the crucifix on the table downstairs when the detective shows up. Chris walks the detective out and you can see that the crucifix is gone. Next time you watch this scene, imagine Regan walking quietly downstairs and grabbing the crucifix while they're talking in the kitchen. It always creeps me out. I love this movie! Awesome reaction, thanks!
YES! I love how throughout the movie there are somethings happening offscreen that make everything even scarier. Like the scene with the church statue (I can't remember if it's only in the director's cut). Since we know Regan is an artist (she makes a clay bird and the detective notices some of her art by the window), we know she was the one going to the church and desecrating the statue (imagine that happening, how creepy!). But it's all in the details, which makes it all more frightening.

The male nurse who takes care of Regan is a real life serial killer. The director of this film, William Friedkin, interviewed him years later and it inspired him for his film Cruising with Al Pacino.

The man Regan says is "gonna die up there" is an astronaut who has an upcoming launch. This is much clearer in the book, and in author William Peter Blatty's subsequent novel The Ninth Configuration, he actually suffers a mental breakdown during the launch and aborts.
Yeah I have watched 5 reaction videos and no one seemed to catch that. I think it is just a line of dialogue that gives away the accident happening.

I had just entered Marine boot camp, when this was released. Cut off from the outside world for 3 months....I missed out on all of the hype. Never even knew of the film's existence until later in the summer of 1974, when a buddy insisted I see it. He said something about it being a 'scary' movie....but no further details. Going into the theater completely blind.....WOW! 46 years later....& I still WON'T sleep at night, unless the TV is on ( for some light ). I certainly got my money's worth...& probably traumatized for life.
Not just one of the best horror films, but a great film period. The character development and acting are unequaled.
The best acting is with the child and the mother. The priest not so much to me.
@@starry2006 I agree. I've always considered The Exorcist to be Ellen Burstyn's movie first and foremost. Jason Miller gives a solid performance but it's largely one-note and holds virtually none of the tender aspects of Karras's personality that William Peter Blatty conveyed of the character in his novel.

The Exorcist is the definition of the slow burn. If you have the patience and attention span, you get a lot more out of the experience of watching it. Those are the best types of horror flicks, as far as I'm concern. There's just far more depth and meaning to it. It's the only horror that is high quality enough to actually win Oscars.
A lot of youtube reviewers watch it with a bunch of giggling friends ... thats cheating....
To get the scariest effect, watch it alone in a quiet room either in the late afternoon when the lights are dull or at night ...
The film even drew controversy after it's release where audience members started to vomit in the theater and most walked out without ever finishing it.
There's footage of people fainting after the screenings & theater employees carrying people to benches. It's insane how much of an impact this film had.

This movie is almost 50 years old and it’s still one of the greatest horror films ever made. You’re my favorite reactor Brandon, keep up the grind! 🙏🏻
The Exorcist is truly a slow burner of the best kind.
Imagine all the movies it has inspired, like The Changeling, the Conjuring and Hereditary.
Jason Miller as Father Karras is close to being the main character for me.
Imagine sacrificing your life spreading the Word for a god who's not there when you need him.
Like his friend is telling him: "If you wasn't a priest you'd be a famous psychiatrist in Park Avenue. Your Mother should live in a penthouse instead of the..."
Imagine your Mother is sent to an asylum because you cannot pay for a proper hospital and the last words you hear from her are:
"Why did you do this to me?".
The falling necklace, the Mother coming up from the Underground. And then descending down again.
Then the chilling scene where she's appearing on Regan's bed...
I don't even watch this as a horror film, but simply as a drama about trying to save a young girl from evil. Once you let go of what mental image you hold of what a "horror" or "scary" film should be, the Exorcist is a surprisingly effective story with some pretty outstanding performances, particularly by Jason Miller.
And Miller wasn’t even an actor. He was a playwright. (That Championship Season)
I saw the extended version but Miller wasn't really the strong point in the acting for me, it was really the child and the mother.
To me this movie is about questioning your faith in times of darkness. Even the director has said in a past interview that this movie will leave you with one of two conclusions either it will confirm your belief in the power of good to overcome the power of evil or it will convince you that the world is an evil and corrupt place.
It actually convinced me of nothing. It’s a movie. If priests actually had powers they would help dying children in hospitals. Faith just means you will practically believe in anything on no evidence at all.
Or both.
@@matthewsullivan6652 That’s the whole point of faith. Having hope as small as a pebble in times of adversity. Faith is lost when you accept that you are weak when you are more capable. Also death is part of reality, you can’t save anyone but yourself , having faith is accepting that.
Or simply a film on a supernatural subject. I think most people de facto think the world is bad, that's why religions like to talk of afterlives or escaping re-incarnation.

One of my favorite scenes in movie history is when Father Karras turns to her and says "No", when the mother asks him if her daughter is going to die. Then he marches upstairs to do a job he was first hesitant to do and that he knows could kill him. There are so many lessons and parallels here for us all. This movie is way more than a simple horror movie. So much is beneath the surface. Most importantly, for me, is it gets me to root for the good guys.
This is literally the only horror movie that, no matter how many times I watch it, it's always like the first time, however, because clearly I'm a masochist, I'm always willing to watch it again, even if my brain likes to replay certain scenes, and the freaking demon's face, when I close my eyes when I go to sleep
We're clearly twins because I do this too 💀💀 this is the only horror film that has ever SCARED me. It was also the 1st one I'd ever watched. I believe I was 9 years old. Traumatized.
I don't know that I would call it the scariest movie ever made but I would call it the scariest high qualiry movie ever made. Everything about it is top notch. The acting, directing, sound, music, effects, visuals...it matches up with any all time great movie. But it does in the horror genre, which I think is why it's never been equaled.
People’s definition of scary has dramatically changed since then. Scary now is *BOOM* SCARY MONSTER WAAAAGGHH DISCORDANT STRING MUSIC COLLEGE TEEN GETTING DISEMBOWELED!!!1!!!
Scary back then was “I’m sorry, there’s something terribly wrong with your child and there’s no amount of money or technology that can help her” , feeling guilty about putting your sick mother in a home and her dying without getting a chance to reconcile, or something as simple as looking at an ancient statue and getting the feeling that somehow it looks back at you.

I wouldnt say that. There's been some brilliant quality horror films made over the years. But there has been a ton of rubbish ones too! The Exorcist is definitely top ten though. I recommend The Exorcist III also, good sequel.

That questionable. The Shining for instance arguably has better script, camerawork, and probably more good acting.
If you like this based on the makeup and effects, you might like "The Thing" :) One of the best examples of practical effects in cinema :)

It's quick and you'll miss it moment but I really liked the sudden shift of the demon face to normal face on Father Karras just before he killed himself. I thought it was seamless practical effect.

Mike I think it was a extremely well done match cut. I you look closely you can see that the shots don’t match up completely but still very convincing.

I forgot to mention it was the first Horror film to win the Golden Globe award for Best Picture in the drama category.
Shaine White it won for best sound mixing and best adapted screenplay not best picture.

Nevertheless "The Sting" was the movie that won the Oscar for best picture that year. "The Exorcist" was nominated for 10 Academmy Awards, but only won the Oscars that you mentioned.

In my opinion, the scariest parts of this movie are the old school medical procedures!

The medical procedures is not the only scene that causes fainting and running out of the theatre ... people are leaving the movie at different points in the movie ... just watch the video of the reactions, different people are talking about different parts of the movie when interviewed...
The gentleman performing the procedure was a real tech and was commended for his bedside manner then not long after it was found out he was a serial killer. I forget his name though.
I’ve always find the dream of Father Karras terrifying. As someone who lost a parent when was young, is heartbreaking when you never apologized for your mistakes. I had really bad nightmares when my father was sick and after he passed away.

That's by far the best part of his, otherwise I wasn't too engrossed with his story. The child's story really was this film.
Also, there is no sound, no music, nothing. It's so unsettling, you can feel the dread.
Two underrated scenes: the long zoom out when the mother and detective sit at the table silent, feeling alone and lost; and when the priests sit on the steps and talk about what it means - shows that the movie is highly psychological, not just scary. An older friend of mine saw this as a teenager in the theaters when it came out, and they dropped acid beforehand - but there had never been a movie like this and they had quite an experience!
Even if one doesn't find this movie scary, I personally think it's the scariest movie of all time, it is one of the greatest movies of all time. The acting, screenplay, direction, cinematography, score, makeup and sound design are all excellent. It has aged incredibly well. I've always found the scariest part to be imagining that this is your daughter, you have all the means in the world and you still can't figure out what is wrong with her. That is terrifying. It's also terrifying to think that for those sleeping in the house, knowing what is in that bedroom, and the possibility of Regan appearing.
i love that ending, killing himself which is like the greatest sin and will force him to hell forever, yet he does it as its the right thing to do. crazy good ending.
Ugh. I just hate everything about that sentence. It just makes me question what kind of moral God people believe in that would condemn somebody to eternal suffering for doing the moral thing. The Christian God is truly a monster of the same caliber as displayed in poor Reagan here. Good thing neither exist!

@@Freshwater121 That is an opinion and is dependent on whom you ask. Hardcore Christians will tell you suicide is suicide. The intent doesn't matter. You follow the text or you create your own interpretations around what isn't said. One is reflective of The Bible, the other is reflective of the self.
Also, Jesus death wasn't a sacrifice. You can't sacrifice yourself and become God. The point of a sacrifice is that you die and whatever value you had is extinguished in deference to something more important. Since Jesus upon "death" becomes God, that's something different than sacrifice. I dare to call it manipulation.
@@Cthulhu013 I believe he would not be condemned to hell, he wasn't committing suicide, he was sacrificing himself for, as you said, moral reasons, so even though I'm not exactly religious, I do not and will not believe that if God exists, that he would condemn an individual for actions of this nature.
@@Cthulhu013 it wouldn't matter - the significance of his priest friend talking to him at the bottom of the stairs is to offer him absolution for his sons, which Karass expresses by squeezing his hand. Meaning that even if it were considered a suicide attempt, he also was then forgiven by God before death.

I recommend “Exorcist III: Legion”. I DO NOT recommend “Exorcist II: The Heretic” which William Blatty had nothing to do with. Blatty wrote the novel The Exorcist, and wrote and directed the film Exorcist III: Legion (based on his book). Studio interference diluted the film, it is still very good but could have been really great. Blatty has said in interviews that he considers “The Ninth Configuration” which Blatty also wrote and directed, the real follow up to The Exorcist (although there is no connection at all). Another film I highly recommend.
100% this. The Exorcist 3 is def the right sequel to this first one. The Heretic is a terrible follow up despite Linda Blairs "Regan" being the focus of it again as a young adult.

I still very disappointed with Exorcist 3 ... its feels pretentious, some of the effects feels cheap (the granny crawling upside down on the ceiling looks really silly, a person cloaked in a blanket rushing into the hall is just wtf instead of scary) ... nothing in the movie feels truely disturbing like the first movie ... and to tie the devil with serial murders is a little too down to earth kind of ... it just feels like downgrading the devil to the level of criminal serial killers, it distracts from the theme of struggle of religious faith ...

That scene with the nurse and the shears/surgical instrument at the home near the end is nothing but terrifying and pure class horror, right in front of the family. Great movie!
The movie really skirts over the fact that the mom is a very famous actress who can call on some very interesting people, such as an astronaut about to go on a mission to space, to attend her parties. For all its strengths of composition, editing, effects and sound design etc, one weakness is basic plot exposition.

This movie was made in a time when more people in our society were very religious. And they held more extreme beliefs than religious people today. It tapped in to a primal fear that many people had then. That's why it has such a legacy of "scariest movie ever". I'm guessing you weren't alive then, so that might not have occurred to you.
At any rate, it is a classic and will probably remain so for a long time.
For me these religious beliefs were not at all extreme. They were and are more like accurate. What I find extreme is how schools, media and Hollywood continue to teach people not to have this primal fear. It also says to me that these three outlets have done more evil to people by getting them not to see the evil that, they themselves, perpetuate, including the cynicism towards religious beliefs. In my opinion they have greatly contributed to there being much more evil in the world. Being of the older generation, I have clearly seen the progression of this over the years. People of the younger generation have just been desensitized to it. Also, I believe that life is a lot harder today in many ways then it was for my generation. The younger generation is much more hardened to a lot of things than we were back in the day. However, it does not mean that evil no longer exists or that what is shown in this movie couldn't be real. In my opinion, you either believe this or you don't.

I saw it in theaters and it was the first movie in a very long time to make me want to cover my eyes. I was so anxious and scared that the last 15 minutes were almost panic attack inducing. My movie of the year in 2018.
Hereditary is amazing for sure. However that director, Ari Aster, also made Midsommar.... which is probably the most unique movies I’ve ever seen. Frightening, tense, suspenseful, shocking, surprising, ALL THAT and more. It would definitely make for a good reaction... especially by Brandon lol

Linda Blair is the actress that played Regan There are really good interviews about it and how they talk to her about it and how to make it really safe for her but also when this movie came out people were literally throwing up in the isles and running screaming from the movie theater
my grandmother has banned this movie in her house. she was scarred for life watching this at the movies. so, i’ve still never seen it and i live through others by watching the reactions.

I think your grandmother must be a spiritual woman. Personally, I agree with her. I've seen this movie quite a few times. It has scarred me having done so but I am a gluttton for punishment and it is an excellent movie. It has to be a long time in between for me to watch it again and I may not do so again. I refuse to own the film and deleted it off my computer because I believe it to be much more than just a horror film. Billy Graham Jr. said that he believes that even the tape reels of the film have evil on them. There have been many deaths surrounding the film and many strange events as well. I did a movie review for this in college and had just bought a new printer. When I went to print out the report the printer wouldn't stop printing. It actually seemed to go crazy, spitting out the pages and I couldn't stop it. I had to finally unplug it. Those with Christian beliefs and many spiritual people get this. Many people today don't feel this way because they have been taught in school and by the media to be more cynical of such things and many even to be cynical of faith. Therefore, they are not as affected by it and it is just another horror movie. For many people of faith this is NOT just a horror movie. It is all too real!

Fun fact: The actor who played the priest wasn't told about the vomit ahead of time, so his reaction is 100% authentic. It was apparently cream of pea soup mixed with something else.
I believe they mixed the soup with oatmeal.
He was told about the vomit but he was told the vomit would only hit him in the chest so your main point about his reaction is correct but he did know there was going to be vomit. I believe it was mixed with oatmeal.
I saw it my senior year and I can still remember how the audience looked in the theatre (1973), everyone was sitting scrunched down into their seats, silent, awestruck, scared, paralyzed almost, some people holding hands, staring up at the screen mesmerized.
The real impact of this film really came during it's debut in 1973: there's a documentary here on TH-cam that shows what happened following its initial release. Basically, theatre managers didn't think the movie would sell, but a week into release and theatres around the country were showing sold out showings for almost a month!
It's amazing seeing the long lines of people waiting for days to see this film, and then seeing or hearing about the many who fainted or collapsed halfway through the showing and having to be carried out of the theatre. What's even more shocking are the people who waited to see it a third or fourth time!!!
William Friedkin always said when making this they never discussed making a horror movie. They wanted to make a drama about the mystery of faith and unknown entities in the world. He thought that the story was powerful enough that if they focused on making a bump in the night horror movie it would just become hokey and feel less real. This adds to its timeless quality. I’ve seen it countless times. It’s power never fades over time. It increases. Masterpiece.

The girl, Linda Blair, did most of the acting and stunts at age 12 when they filmed. At age 13 she was nominated for an Oscar for this excellent performance she delivered!!!!!

Exorcist 3, although very different from the first, is one of the greatest, most interesting thrillers ever made and great to watch while the first is still fresh in the mind.
Then, if you haven't seen it already, Miller's Crossing is for me absolute best film ever made. I've been waiting for something to topple it from the No. 1 spot for 30 years and still not happened.

This film brought two concepts to popular culture:
- people generally didn't know or hadn't heard about exorcism before
- "Ouija" is a Hasbro trademark, the board had been sold as just a game for decades. "Talking boards" had been viewed as cult and superstition thing once or twice, but this film really nailed that point down and the game was never the same in the public mind.
FYI, that demon at the beginning is a Mesopotamian demon god of the winds called Pazuzu. The ancient Mesopotamians believed the hot desert winds brought spells and pestilence that raided the land or could cause phantom pregnancies. To this day, the winds of the Middle Eastern desert have names, some of which have been used as the names of older models of Maserati automobiles.
My favorite car of all time, by the way, is named after the 50-year wind that blows dust storms over Egypt--the Khamsin.

This is the scariest movie of all time. Why? Because it emits pure evil at you, the type of evil that puts genuine fear in you. Hereditary, Midsommar, and The Witch are evil films, but they're not as good as The Exorcist. This movie doesn't terrify me, but I like it and respect it for what it is. Psycho is not scary to me either. But, I like that film as well because it is brilliant, definitely ahead of its time. The Norman Bates explanation at the end, absolutely brilliant.
I think people need to separate facts from opinions.
I thought Hereditary was genuinely scary. It just left you uneasy and you had to see but didn't want to see what was around the corner. Midsommer I didn't feel was scary moreso shock factors. I actually left the theater during it because the story was terrible and the slow pacing caused too much anxiety. It wasn't a scary film more of a sick film. "Lets zoom in on this bashed in face as close as we can and hold the camera on it just to digust you". I haven't seen Witch but I've heard its slow and methodical.
@@thewelder4449 Yes indeed. Remember the 1980s cartoon Care Bears? Remember the bear with the heart symbol of his chest? He (or she) had the ability to shoot heart and love at people from his chest. These particular horror films do the same thing. They're like an evil Care Bear that shoots evil at you, the type of evil that puts genuine fear into you. That's why these horror films are so effective. The Exorcist was simply far ahead of its time. Hereditary is more scary, but Midsommar is more evil to me because of that evil pagan cult. That's just how I see them.

This movie is a masterpiece. It was made at the perfect time everything about it just helps increase the terror. Every horror movie made after this took something from The Exorcist
The Exorcist is my favorite horror film. It may not be the absolute scariest film ever but it is so well made. It's much more than just a simple horror film, It's a great film in general. If you liked The Exorcist I suggest checking out Rosemary's Baby (1968).
For someone who has loved this movie since I was a kid watching someone experience it for the first time is the best

I saw this for the first time at the age of 10 back in 93', and love it but had a hard time sleeping afterwards. Whenever I would enter a dark room, I'd imagine possessed Regan hiding in the corner somewhere, snickering, getting ready to harm me.
I love how it gradually gets more and more intense until breaking that fragile part of your mind!
Fun fact: The demon face flashes are actually a makeup test done with the woman who did the voice of possessed Regan.
Correction. The woman who did the voice was an old actress named Mercedes Cambridge, she had nothing to do with any physical part of this film. The woman with the demon make up was Linda Blaire’s stunt double name Irene ( can’t recall her last name).

Thank god you chose to watch the theatrical cut! I do still respect the Director's Cut, but that version is a lot less scary compared to the Theatrical. It removes a lot of mysterious elements with certain additional scenes/shots as well as adds in a couple of late 90s/early 00s effects which already look out of date and stick out like a sore thumb in comparison. Nice reaction dude. I watched this in my teens as I'd heard so much about it being the scariest movie and i found it mostly just unsettling. I dont know about you but I find realism way more scary than any horror movies, specifically what horrific things humans are capable of will always scare me far more than the supernatural. I enjoy these reactions tho, its a nice way to experience a movie again and hear someone else's take. You always notice things that i miss in movies and likewise I sometimes pick up on things that you miss. Thanks again, see you in the next one!
Great reaction to a great movie!! The Exorcist profoundly impacted America’s collective psyche regarding the existence of demons and such, it was right at the start of the "satanic Panic" of the 70' & 80's and it's a must see... But cinematographically speaking, The Exorcist 3 is the very best of the series, more deep and psychological... It's the only one directed by the author of the book (William Peter Blatty) and George C Scott is brilliant as is Brad Dourif... An unrecognized gem in my opinion.

The thing about this movie was that people were getting sick on theaters due to the subliminal messages in the movie. They used quick images of demons and the devil so just like they did in the movie fight club, people saw things and sometimes didn’t know they saw it but their mind did pick it up.
Best movie EVER. Watching the behind the scenes makes it even more amazing. The room was actually freezing while filming and they had to levitate the bed by hand. No cgi, it's unbelievable
