Because so many people define their identity by things like the party they support, the religion they belong to, the 'class' they belong to, the 'colour group' they belong to and so it goes on. The bit I can't understand, and maybe this is just me, is that Kamala has been one of the top prosecutors in the country before running for higher office. What strikes me about Harris is that people didn’t know her that well and conservatives were saying how Harris wasn’t that smart or articulate. But with the debate over Harris showed she was incredibly intelligent and smart plus she knew exactly how to push Trump’s buttons to make him look foolish. Conservatives are quick to label a person of color as unintelligent. Kamala is an attorney and a prosecutor which speaks volumes.

Because so many people define their identity by things like the party they support, the religion they belong to, the 'class' they belong to, the 'colour group' they belong to and so it goes on. If they go against those things they think they are not being true to themselves anymore and are cutting themselves off from where they feel they belong and are accepted and supported.
Thankfully there might just be enough of us, if we are really lucky, who define our identities on something more meaningful than any of those things - like our shared humanity, shared values, shared love for our children and families, shared loved of freedom for all and respect for others. All of those things and more have nothing to do with your politics, religion, race, social status and all the other things that distract us from what really matters. And all of those things allow us to be true to ourselves and be accepted and supported by a community where we belong without wedding ourselves to any party or religion etc.
I like to remind lifelong republicans who share with me the kinds of values etc I spoke about above that they are still being true to themselves, and they still have a place where they are accepted, supported and belong, if they don't vote Republican this time. Because the truth is, they won't be turning away from the party they've supported all their lives - that party has gone off-track and has already turned away from them.
