I saw a high-end amplifier with an unknown cheap chinese brand capacitor inside, that's why I love Yamaha. I have big brother Yamaha AS-500, powerful sound, I love it. Thanks for the look of the inside of this amplifier.
Thank you for taking the time to share your analysis of the Yamaha A-S301; I had no idea you could buy such a nice amp for so little money in modern times.
I feel a bit dizzy while watching the video cause the camera moves so fast lol, but it's a great review as always! Thanks stereopolice. I'll wait for part three!!!
Regarding the DAC in the A-S301...I was sending the digital out from a Sony DVD player with CDs (controversial I know, but sounds great!) to a CA Dacmagic 100 and then on to the Yamaha...wonderful. Thought I'd give the DAC in the A-S301 a shot and pulled the Dacmagic. I have to say, i like the on-board Yamaha DAC better! Granted the DACmagic 100 is hardly a world beater, but I expected it would be better than the Yamaha's and I don't think it is, at least not the way I use it. Can't speak to the phono preamp, haven't used it. YMMV as they say.
I really wanted to watch this video but the camera movement was far too excessive, apart from that... Well done on getting out the schematics and going right through the amplifier, if only you paused the video before you moved the camera. If you work on keeping the camera slow but steady your channel will grow, your not the first person to receive this complaint and you won't be the last so please don't take it personal.. You have the ability to look at a schematic and recognize typical output stage and that's a quality that a lot of so called audiophiles don't have, I listened to one person reviewing an amplifier with the top cover removed trying to explain that the midrange warmth was coming from the transformer LOL, yeah I couldn't listen to him... Apart from the transformer providing the power needed to run the amplifier, the only way that the transformer will affect the sound is when it becomes saturated and can no longer deliver the power needed to drive the output stage and it begins to clip the output signal.. Yeah I can't listen to someone who talks about things that are beyond their scope and incorrect...
I am looking for an amp to use as my baseline. I do a lot of DIY and spend lots of time tinkering. This amp is such a breath of fresh air. Looking into alternatives, there is very little competition. I mean what? Cambridge Audio doing a plain stereo chipamp without even a phono? Maybe the Pioneer A10 comes a bit close
Very detailed description of the build. I know nothing about electronics, bit I watched it back to back :) One thing I’d change is your shooting style - hard to follow the camera being all over the place 😂
The best op-amps appear to be Texas Instruments "SoundPlus" series, such as OPA1641 / OPA1612 - latter has 0.000015% THD @ 1Khz and its Rail-to-Rail output
Can you make a video or include in a future video, your professional background. I see a lot of gear in your lab, but I am not sure if you are a tech or engineer. You certainly have good command in explaining electronic concepts.
I am not sure I understood your comments about the A+B feature. What setting should one have on for 4 speakers that are 8 ohms each. To activate all 4 speakers, one has to turn the speaker selector to A+B. I am not bi wiring or anything like that. I am merely hooking up 4 speakers to the unit, they are 8 ohms speakers. Should the impedance be set to high or low? This aspect of hi fi has always been a nuisance to me. I've pretty much given up trying to understand it and often the information is contradictory. What do you suggest? 4 speakers. All 8 ohms speakers. All 4 turned on. A+B (after all - if you have 4 channels why can you not use all 4 speakers?) High impedance or low for 4 speakers or low. And for 2 speakers A or B - high impedance or low. Or should I just leave the damned thing set for 8 regardless? BTW- I have the A-S 501 and I love it and I am considering getting the A-S- 701 for the living room. The 801- has computer features that are helpful for many, but I am not really interested in that as I am just an old schooled approach dude with CD's and LP's and maybe I will bring back cassettes as I have some recorded stuff that I miss. looking at pictures of the a-s701 those jumpers are also there, it looks almost the same inside besides for a larger transformer, maybe their receivers also use the same board with the functions. With this amp range i think it really comes down to how much power you want but i would doubt that soundwise these are any different.
Great video and you cover a lot of stuff. Over the many years; one of my main complaints about Yamaha was the Variable Loudness. I don't know why but I never liked it. To my memory I can not remember when Yamaha did not make high quality pieces. I have been a Rotel fan over the past 15 years and my main 2 channel system is Rotel. I am also buying older NAD (1980's) units and playing with them (mostly streaming from my computer). For the money I do not think you can go wrong with Yamaha. It has always been a safe bet. For a little more money I might consider the NAD C 316BEE V2 . Pioneer Elite (now owned by Onkyo) has an integrated amplifier that looks interesting but.....meh; NO!
Hello, I'm looking for an amplifier for my homemade home automation. Basically I have an electricity plug that turn on/off when I start the music on a device. I would like to plug the amplifier to this plug to start/stop it automatically. So this lead me to 2 questions: a) Could it break this amp if we turn it on/off directly win an interrupter from the electricity power wire ? b) Will it works? I mean, will the input always be on the last position or will it be reset to a standard one (and if yes, which one? ) Any other advice is also welcome. Thank you 😄
First of all thanks for your review. i just bought as 301 , and i switched it impedance selector to 4om cause my speackers are 4.. but i read diferent opinions, to should i leave it to 6, or 4. Any suggestions?
What if I want to run two sets of 8ohm speakers - 4 speakers total ? How would you configure this in relation to the speaker switch provided in the 301 amp ?
Hello, a quick question about this amp if you have time. Can I use an external equalizer with this amp? If Im on tuner input how would I get the sound through an equalizer without a tape monitor? Would I have to run the eq between the tuner and the amp since the eq has the rca's on back to do that and then a front mounted bypass on it. Trouble with that is I think i would have no eq use on CD or any other inputs. Not at all like my Kenwood KA-7100. Thanks
Hello. About your advice of not using A+B.. Does that counts as well if I connect an active subwoofer (having high input impedance) in the B? Or I should be OK with that?
does the s-501 have something diferrent from the s-301 except from more watts per channel?because here in greece the price difference is 40 eyros more for the s-501...
@@mikechivy If im you i wouldnt move to s1100 even after knowing that 1100 is a beast. Difficult to justify price difference. Theres nothing wrong with 801, great all-rounder.
@@aurelianobuendia5360 Yeah I keep thinking about it and am like, OK its not ridiculous if I sell my 801 for 5-600 since its nearly mint. Spend about a 1,200 more for a new A-S100 on ebay. But then I factor in the DAC cost too and its like woah. Were talking 2k more for something I'm not totally sure about
I have an A-S 501 with 3 years of use. It went crazy! I arrived on vacation and went to listen to a vinyl record and I couldn't do it anymore. The led lights on the front panel started to flash all at the same time. The next day I went to try and it turns out that the on / off led and flashes on and off while on. I am disappointed with Yamaha hi-fi equipment.
There is a cheaper version of this, the A-S201. Yamaha doesn't list it on their US site but on their European site. I guess it's not available in the US market.
Hai bro ive got an old pioneer amplifier, from the 90s. Now it won’t turn on. It has power because the led on the power button lights up but, when i press the button, nothing happens. Do you have any idea of what might be the problem ??
@stereopolice Hi, your pick please. Yamaha A-S801 vs Yamaha R-N803. In great dilemma here. My primary criteria is sound quality. I am a purist but the receiver is highly tempting. 😣 Thank you!
Hello friend. Would you recomend this amp to go with two pairs speakers yamaha NS BP185 ? can you advise on what amp will do on those speakers. Am around the price of 301. Thank you sir.
What I finnde in Yamaha As 701....about sound, power , conectivity, features... Makes me to bought..another. So now...have 2 of 701es. Will be nice..if Yamaha put a bit more of wats and curent in all...on 1000...2000...and 3000 level and, yust a bit beter dynamics/speed...(maybe) So thhat every higher number in those 5 numbers amps...gives some 20/30 wats more then one before. Grat yob....briliant sound...great features..ease of use...powerfull enough. Beast for money...prity much sure. Thank you🙂🍀👋👍
Hi all, I bought A-S301 last week. It is a very nice amplifer but I noticed something. When I turn on amp in a silent place for example at midnight I heard a hımmm noise which is coming from transformer. Is it normal ?
I have the same in my a-s1200, but not in my a-s501. The sales guy said it was normal on powerfull amplifiers because the transformer needs to charge up the large capacitors once turned on. I also had the same on my Hegel 2x300 W (did not like it btw)
Νο it is not normal!! I have the same problem with my Yamaha a-s701.After 6 months it began the noise and after 2 years the noise became louder and i can hear the noise at 2 meters in my room!!The technician told me that they want to tighten the transformer ...........
I never understand this criticism. You have bright speakers and there is an eq section on the amp for this reason. It’s better to have bright sound to take away from than a dull sound that makes you introduce more distortion into the signal.
Nice work SP. Just shows, you get what you pay for and sometimes you get more (rarely). My AS1100 is definitely the best built amp I have ever owned. And believe me, I have trashed some absolute shit :-) Btw. I have to disagree with you regards tape, I own a Nakamichi deck and I can make near perfect clones. Just saying, my ears have been good to me. Buy a Dragon or a RX505 for review!
Yamaha R S 202 is a integrated amp .. and the price is $150 so that's less than the 301.. it a great sounding amp matched with the Yamaha cd player .. CD S 303.. I have it in my Garage paired with Kefs Uniq and B&W Rock solids.. incredible sound.. The only bad thing about th 202 is the Speaker terminals.. They are spring loaded and very very poorly made
Have anyone noticed Japan/EU/UK ver seem to enjoy slight higher quality parts than rest of world? e.g. p.74 service manual IC407 and some parts in main PWR. Wonder why Yamaha do that? This occurs on 301 to 801, 1200 seem no difference.
You're just robbing your amplifier of half of its power. Leave it on 8 ohms regardless of your speakers and forget about it. th-cam.com/video/Ou5bO8P2Drw/w-d-xo.html
Thanks and congratulations on your review of the amp. I currently have a Technics SU-VZ220 amplifier, and later I want to buy the Yamaha AS301. Where can I download the diagrams that you show in the video? I want to know more about the DAC, which has the Yamaha AS301 amplifier. Thanks.
I was going to leave a comment on here to the tune of sort of nitpicking your video but I realized that other people have said similar and mama did say if you don't have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.
I saved up for 3 months to buy the as801 sent it back after 2 weeks ! been a Yamaha fan for 10 plus years then I bought the Pioneer elite sx-N30 for 100 buck less and it's on a different level heck my Yamaha 2010 ax497 sounded better it was 499.00 bucks

@@aurelianobuendia5360 Ugh. I am so tempted to ugrade from the a-s801 to the a-s1100 and im starting to think its not necessary
Were talking 2k more for something I'm not totally sure about
Should I go with as801 or save up to buy as 1100 currently owning AS- 500, thanks
Great stuff ! Thx
There is a cheaper version of this, the A-S201. Yamaha doesn't list it on their US site but on their European site. I guess it's not available in the US market.
Whats difference of this and 202 stereo receiver?
Hai bro ive got an old pioneer amplifier, from the 90s. Now it won’t turn on. It has power because the led on the power button lights up but, when i press the button, nothing happens. Do you have any idea of what might be the problem ??
can U review as 801?
@stereopolice Hi, your pick please.
Yamaha A-S801 vs Yamaha R-N803. In great dilemma here. My primary criteria is sound quality.
I am a purist but the receiver is highly tempting. 😣
Thank you!
Others is around me; Some Rottels bridget mono at 330w
NAD c272
Tibos 150 allso bridged on 350w/seams like digital amp
ATC P1 2×150 W/8 OHMS
AND ONE CUSTOM BUILD...4 ×150+W/8OHMS...POWER AMP.
USE FEW PREAMPS AND dACs nuprime 9&10, rega, one with 4 lamps...etc..etc.
For sure, considering price/sound/features....Yamaha is sure winner.
Actualy...I am so positivly surprised with Yamaha.
Will be nice..if Yamaha put a bit more of wats and curent in all...on 1000...2000...and 3000 level and, yust a bit beter dynamics/speed...(maybe)
So thhat every higher number in those 5 numbers amps...gives some 20/30 wats more then one before.
Ok...can be that because of ATC scm speakers using...feal ..more wats can be of help.
End of a story..
Yamaha....congratulationes fore all those integrate amps you do.
Grat yob....briliant sound...great features..ease of use...powerfull enough.
Beast for money...prity much sure.
Thank you🙂🍀👋👍
Motion sickness just set in for me!
@@sindreabrahamsen4286 I think it is not normal. Plates inside the transformer is vibrating and making noise.
Νο it is not normal!! I have the same problem with my Yamaha a-s701.After 6 months it began the noise and after 2 years the noise became louder and i can hear the noise at 2 meters in my room!!The technician told me that they want to tighten the transformer ...........
I had to sell my AS 301. Treble was too harsh for me.
And believe me, I have trashed some absolute shit :-)
Btw.
They are spring loaded and very very poorly made
more goodies inside than a Rega Elicit R
thanks for the review!
Which of Yamaha stereo receivers will work with graphic equalizer? Thanks.
R-S700
Was that 80 watts per channel or total?
Never touch the impedance switch, leave it at 8 ohms. It's only there for legal reasons.
Why? Seriously... i just bought him and i switched it to 4om cause my speackers are 4.. so i read diferent opinions
You're just robbing your amplifier of half of its power. Leave it on 8 ohms regardless of your speakers and forget about it.

@@Gary_M thanks! Is it safe? Cause someone said that it might hurt my amp in high volume... so whats the reason for being theare?
Super thanks!
Why did u keep moving the camera? Left to right , and to left and to right⋯
Thanks and congratulations on your review of the amp.
I currently have a Technics SU-VZ220 amplifier, and later I want to buy the Yamaha AS301.
Where can I download the diagrams that you show in the video?
I want to know more about the DAC, which has the Yamaha AS301 amplifier.
Thanks.
The bobbing and weaving with the camera is making me dizzy.
請問機內有保險絲嗎
I was going to leave a comment on here to the tune of sort of nitpicking your video but I realized that other people have said similar and mama did say if you don't have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.
I saved up for 3 months to buy the as801 sent it back after 2 weeks ! been a Yamaha fan for 10 plus years then I bought the Pioneer elite sx-N30 for 100 buck less and it's on a different level heck my Yamaha 2010 ax497 sounded better it was 499.00 bucks
Glad you found what sounds good to your ears. That's what it's all about. Regards ...
Thank you
Why can u not ab when the manufacturer let's u do it
Bueno, es eso, un Amplificador integrado con una relación calidad precio digamos aceptabke.
Is this class AB or class D amplifier?
AB
ok understood!
It comes in silver to:)
Dear stereopolice, I have two YAMAHA NS- 90 cheap speakers. Is it ok to hook up those speakers to AS301 amp?
YAMAHA NS90 SPEC
Nominal Impedance 6 ohms
Frequency Response 60 Hz - 35 kHz
Nominal Input Power 60 W
Maximum Input Power 200 W
some of them come in a silver finish.
Too much moving of the camera. Very difficult to watch the video. In next video don't move or shake your camera. This is an advice to you.
It was very difficult to watch. Stop moving the camera
Dude, you gave me a headache within 5 minutes. Please keep your camera steady next time.
please buy a decent tripod.....I feel sick watching this
Cannot remove power cord, shame
I couldn't watch the entire video cause of the camera moving all over the place .. need some dramamine to watch that jeeeeze
