If you are having problems with anything try reading through the comments first as there are quite a few I have responded to before and your problem may be similar.
Common Comments/Problems:
- Black screen is still there after selecting the option in the emulator.
Answer: Double check to make sure that the both the emulator and rom were check marked also it may be a GPU problem, Try to switch the GPU setting to another option and try running again. Laptops seem to have the biggest problem with this.
- I downloaded the rom but still doesn't show up in the emulator.
Answer: Once you have downloaded the rom place it in a new folder. NOTE the rom file should be called DeS.zip "this is the file name from mega". Make sure you have a extracting program like 7zip or winrar. Extract DeS.zip to an empty folder. Once done move that folder to "dev_hdd0\disc" and place in there. Reload RPCS3 and the rom should now display in the emulator.

11/13/18 Works as of this date, all links and video suggestions. The DL from Mega took 3 separate tries as I was using the free storage and not the paid so I had to restart the DL every 5 hours to get it to finish. Only DL so much per day on free. Its laggy as heck but I will restart and see how that goes. Very good Sir. Thank you

Thank you very much, finally got my black screen fixed. Though the only thing i did change was using Vulkan instead of OpenGL, though that might be because i am using and AMD GPU. using OpenGL caused the game to bug out and flash the screen every second.
@@auridon it's really odd how some of those graphical setting just aren't compatible with some gpus over others. Just goes to show what has optimizations and more priorities over other cards. Glad it worked out for you! Hopefully you get to enjoy that good!

Open GL doesn't open the game at all, and Vulkan only shows the weapons, but everything else is just black.
Edit: I fixed it, just tick the "buffer white color" option.

the black screen error only occurs when u are using a pkg/rap from the PSN Version of the game, the emulator uses a pecific data from that file that are usually used for blue ray disks and the emulator tries to start the game as a movie. U have to use the Disk rom, the renderer isnt the problem. And sure you get a black screen when u try to use a renderer that cant be used because your APU or GPU isnt supporting it.

I had to fuck around with it a bit. But I finally got it working with no freezes or crashes. Same with Silent Hill Downpour. Bit of a headache. But total success.

Thank you for the very detailed explanation. I was trying to play this last night and could get the game started, character built, and play the beginning of the tutorial. However, when I'd warp to the next section I'd get a black screen with just the HUD visible.
Going to follow this step by step tonight. I know I had it on Vulkan, I also was configuring from the emulator itself rather than the game. Hopefully changing those will correct the issue.
So is Vulkan non-viable? Or can I switch it to Vulkan after the game is stable?

rjdunn808 for me I cant run Vulcan for the demon souls as I just get a black screen even with write color buffers on. It just depends on certain configs of computers. For you it should be fine. Hopfully the tutorial helps out. If you have questions on anything feel free to ask. I'll try to get back as quick as I can.
How to fix the black screen problem?
The game starts but what I don't see is my character, there is even sound.

Watching this has gotten me much closer to getting the game working optimally. The only problem I'm having is the constant freezes the game is having, to compile textures. The tutorial alone, it happened 10 times against the 2 enemies (teaching you targeting), where it would pause for about 5 seconds before I can move a step and then pause again.
Is there a setting that will fix this?

Help please! I did everything exactly as you did in the video and whenever I try booting it up it says "Booting Failed: Disc could not be mounted properly. Make sure the disc is not in the dev_hdd0/ game folder"

I do not even have the option to select GPU texture scaling. Its not even there for me
The rom download page doesn't work anymore. Edit: after looking through some other comments I've been lead to believe I don't need the iso and I only need the 12 rom files. Is that true?

I used your version, like exactly same, even with same disc ver., setup, everything and game is seems without bug, only one problem...
permanent game freeze like every our....
It seem sometimes at new locations game stuck/total freeze and I must restart the game....but after that runs almost perfectly...to the time when it gets stucked at another location x) maybe problem with texture compilation, CPU compatibility... whatever?
BTW PC base is i5-8600k (4,9GHz OC) + asus 1080 GTX, Win10 system ....running pretty smooth, just that game freeze is fu*kedup x)

Yeah, another guy with Demon's souls problems. Black screen of doom. Pretty cool that you are still responding to comments. Specifically, the 3d elements flicker between a white and black screen where the 2d elements are still visible, sometimes showing the game as is should be for a few frames. All settings are identical to the vid. Vulkan crashes the emulator hard on game boot. My GPU is vulkan compatbile, doom 2016 works good on it.

for the most part what I always say first to this is, 1 double check to make sure that you set the setting in both the rom and the emulator. if both were set and its still happening try changing the graphic setting to opengl or any other option in the graphic listing, again while making sure that its set in both the emulator and rom, sometimes this can just fix it. If its still happening let me know.
@@gamegalaxyzone7763 I made sure that the settings are the same for both the rom and emulator and tried both OpenGL and Vulkan. OpenGL results in the flickering, and vulkan crashes the emulator itself on game launch. Thanks for the quick reply.

Just one and use the second link from mega. Thats the one I used in the video. It may take time to download and it also may say it exceeds a limit but just leave it there and come back later and it should continue and finish out.

im 5 years late but, my game is stuck at the first pop up where you have to click OK - i cant do it, tried with my keyboard and controller, did set up both of them in the emulator, any idea how to fix it?

Later reply then I wanted. Not much I can think of besides checking to see if the rom has its own preferences as well. Double check and see if there are some settings to mess around with for both, try relaunching the emulator and rom a few times too. Might not be picking up the inputs from the emulator itself. You can also try external inputs and see if that also works. I'd save that as a last resort however.
Otherwise it's a lot of the time checking different settings and plugging and unplugging things.
Have you tried the newer releases of rpcs3? Has the fps improved? Because i tested demon souls a few months ago on my i5 4460 and gtx 970 and i was getting 40-45 fps with occasional freezes.
The most recent I have tried it was sometime between October or November of 2020. And at that time yes it was improved compared to previous versions. For the most part I know that the game does really well at those settings. I usually never hit above 35 FPS but the game would at least run and be playable. You can try to see if the emulator had an additional settings added to adjust game properties, which could help run the game smoother. That's about all I can say on that hope it gives you an answer for your question.
The mega link I downloaded in the description is missing the PS3_GAME files and when I pasted it in the dev_hdd0 it kept saying Invalid disc path found, Did I miss something or is the Mega file no longer working?
The mega file takes a while to download. Once you have it the file should contain 12 rar files if it doesnt then yes your missing something. Otherwise I'm not sure what would be causing it to happen
@@gamegalaxyzone7763 The thing is when I'm extracting it there's no PS3_UPDATE/PS3_GAME, I'm not missing any files or anything I still got the 12 rar files and all but it just refuses to extract the correct way, could it be that I'm using 7zip or perhaps it's outdated?
@@JEELLEH if there is an ps3 update file that sounds like the firmware version. There is a separate link to get the firmware update. Otherwise if you have the 12 rars then there's nothing missing for the file. At that point thats all I can say. Am not sure what else it could be.
@@gamegalaxyzone7763 It's supposed to extract and look like a Blu Ray disc file something like (BLUS30443) mine just wont do it it's just a folder with the rom and the 12 rar files nothing else :/

It should work fine. Just connect it and see if the emulator picks it up. If not try to adjust some settings in the controller tab.

Hi, I know its old video but i have a problem. When I go to MEGA site there are only 7 rar files instead of 12.
There's a couple things I can think of.
One could be that mega didn't download all of the files when the rar was completed. If anything double check to see if it needs to resume download or not.
Two when you extract the files there may be more or less. I know I had an issue similar but it's been so long I don't remember what I did to fix it. You can also try using the files you have. It is possible that is all the files and the format changed. Try it out first if it doesn't work or didn't initially let me know. I can take a look at it and see what's up.

Another person just had the same experience. For now what I can say is to still try it and see. Could have reduced the files, could be mega not downloading fully, it also could be a change from the extract. For now try it still if it has any issues let me know.

this is the error that i've got after booting the game it got me stuck on black screen with compiling shaders
cant say I know much on that one. It seems like it had an error rendering data on startup. The only thing I can say is to try changing or adjusting some of the settings in the rom and try relaunching it a few times. Other then that I'm not sure what that error is.

Extracted the files to the disc folder, but it says the whole thing is invalid when I load up RPCS3. Can't find any guides on how to fix this, any suggestions?
Trying to confirm some things first. One when you downloaded the file was it called DeS.zip. second open the zip file and confirm that theres 12 rar files inside. If thata the case the right click on the DeS.zip folder and extract to an empty folder. Once done it should look like the file from the video. If this was done and still failed its possible that the zip don't download all the files and you might want to try downloading it again. On the rare chance this wasn't because of the file it could be the way rpcs3 was setup. But let me know if this works first before that.
The game starts up correctly, however the text doesn't show up at all, is there any way to fix it?
I have checked the write color buffers and reloaded it 69 times by now, and it still shows me a black screen with the HUD.
Check and make sure the setting is toggled on both the emulator and rom. And if that was already the case, change your GPU settings to a something else and try to real load it. If the rom is still showing a black screen the game after this it may be incompatible with your computer.
Even if I followed every step of your video i can't play. Game crashes after boot, sometimes it crashes on the opening video and sometimes it crashes at first dialog shown.
The game is showing up on the game list I boot it, it looks like it's doing fine but no game window pops up, even though according to the emulator it's running.
Well thats a new one. Cant say I would know the reason on what would be causing that. It's either the emulator taking longer than normal to launch or some sort of error that preventing it from launching. I can try to look at the emulator later today but if I dont response than I dont know what it could be and I'm sorry about that.

For some reason when i put the des folder into into disc it has nothing in it so rpcs3 says there is no bootable content
Check to make sure that the file is unzipped and that it contained 12rar files. If that didnt work then it may nit have downloaded all the files when you got the file and may need to be redonwloaded.

Nope I still respond to all of these. For the most part when you have the demon souls zip file, extract it to an empty folder and you will get the demon souls blue 30433 file. You just have to move that file to the disc folder. You can check the description box there was a comment I had that might make it easier to follow. If you still have trouble let me know I can help you with it. Probably wont response for a while, am just about to sleep.

My bad its been so long that I couldn't remember what the file name was. Yes when you extract the rom the file wont be named blus it will be DeS. place that file in the disc folder and reload the emulator and it should appear.

Yes you can use a xbox controller. You just have to set it up in the settings

I can load up the game, watch the opening scene, traverse the start menu, and even make a character. But after making a character, I attempt to skip the beginning scene where your character walks through the fog, and the game will freeze. I can hear the sound of spawning at a bonfire (That I recognize from Dark Souls) and then the game goes quiet and is totally locked. I'll stop the emulation and change the config settings and try again, and only get the same result.
Also, I don't even have the option to select "Vulcan" under the Renderer drop-down menu. There is only OpenGL and Null for me. I know you recommend OpenGL anyways, but I've seen other youtube videos of people running DeS with Vulcan just fine, and I'll try any option to get this to run. Maybe Vulcan would work for me.
I've been trying to get this game operational for a week and a half now with the free time I have in between work and other things I have to do and I'm about pulling my hair out, and losing my mind with all this time I've put into trying to make this work and have gotten no results. If anyone has any idea, I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it.
Alright lets try and get this game running for you. First for the vulcan option, I am guessing that the graphic card in your computer is an Nvidia card. If this is the case then the reason that the option for vulcan is gone is due to a update with the Nvida series cards. I can link you to a video that should fix the update to re-enable the vulcan driver to appear on the option list in RPCS3. If you do that and try the option and still have problems with the game then message me back and I can try to help with other options.

So I tried the fix from that russian guy in the link you sent, and no luck :(
I triple checked I did everything right, I've been through this type of thing many times and I know the smallest mistake will mess it up, so I'm positive this fix must not be right for me.
In the comments section of that video someone mentioned problems with the Nvidia drivers. So I deleted that edit to the registry from that russian guy, and tried to update Nvidia drivers. My latest driver is from 2015 or '14 (I forget), so I thought maybe this would do the trick. The latest Nvidia driver from 2017 wont install though, I've had this problem since it first dropped, and I thought back then that the Nvidia people would fix this in time, but I was wrong. Won't install through GeForce Experience, and I can't get it manually from the Geforce or the Nvidia website either. Through GeForce Exp. it starts download and stays frozen at 0.00 kb a second. Then through the website it gets all the way to the end of the process and then tells me everything failed to install.
To anyone reading this, avoid Nvidia products. They are incompetent and treat their customers like garbage. I'm due for an upgrade for some of my computer's components (not really in dire need at all, but why not) I can still run new games at max/near max settings, but I would like to purge Nvidia from my life.

Also, I think I am going to either wait for the next RPCS3 version, Get a new non-Nvidia graphics card (mine is 4 and 3/4 years old anyway), or buy a PS3 simply for DeS.
I was pretty hyped when I had seen a few youtubers uploading videos about DeS running smooth now since the latest RPCS3 version, with Dark Souls being a contender for my favorite game ever.
Would be really nice to have it on my PC, being the avid PC gamer I am.
But I'll put this on the shelf for now, and get it figured out eventually. Was going to finally pick up Dark Souls 3 during this summer sale, so it was also going to be perfect timing to dive into the game that started it all.

for that Russian guy's fix, and I am running Windows64 bit on this PC, so I tried to change the "System32" part to "System64" but still no luck. Also tried that by creating a QWORD since the name for DWORD is "DWORD32bit" and then there is QWORD next to it called "QWORD64bit" but that dint work either.

On the first post it only looks like part 2 of the rar was added and nothing else. Make sure that you extracted all 12 rar files to one folder and then place that folder in the disc location. If you did extract all the files to one folder and this was from something else try to re extract the files again as it maybe had an error extracting. Let me know if there are still problems.
@@gamegalaxyzone7763 i got it working but it says its running at 30fps but feels less idk if that's normal i went onto reddit and changed some settings but it still feels a bit slow not smooth and in the configure i don't get all the settings that you get some of them aren't there and i got a 1060Ti 16gb ram and a AMD Ryzen 3 2200G with Radeon Vega Graphics 3.50ghz
@@intbronzefeed3824 Good to hear its working, some answers to your questions. First the game is locked to 30 FPS. It can be high with certain mods and settings but was never optimized for that. Second the configure might be different because of the hardware in your computer. I've never tested on Ryzen CPU yet. Third overall the game can be pretty choppy still even after getting it optimized. One thing that might still be happening is that the emulator might be trying to run the game with the CPU integrated graphic, which would be the Vega Graphics. If this is the case then it probably explains the slow performance, To try and change this have rpcs3 open, Right click on the Demon Souls rom>Configure> GPU>Graphic Devices, and if it says Vega Integrated graphics change it to GeForce Nivida Card. Hopefully this helps answer some things. if stuff still doesn't feel right, feel free to message me again.

I still have the black screen problem even after turning on the white color buffer. Is there any other way to fix this?
2 things to try. One double check to see if you have the setting set on both the emulator and the Rom. If both are checked and its still happening try changing the graphic card setting from opengl to something else and see if that does anything.

Double check to make sure you selected write color buffers on both the rom and emulator. If that was already the case then try to change the gpu settings to another option and try to launch it again. Theses are usually the two things i recommend to people when the game doesnt launch.

Hey, i'm have the "Write color buffers" Activated but the is black, i can see the menu, the life bar etc. but i can't see mi character, i don't see nothing literally.
Late reply been busy as of recent. If you still need a fix here's some things to try. First double check and make sure that both the emulator and rom are checked for write color buffers. Second if it still happens try to change you GPU settings to another option again making sure that its toggled on both the emulator and Rom. Usually this fixes the problem but if it persist just let me know
@@jnastudios3079 I'm not to sure as to why that would be the case. I know ive downloaded the file a few times with no types of errors. When you extracted the file did you get 12 rar files. The only thing I could think of is that the GPU doesnt want to fix the issue. I know that for some reason certain gpus dont seem to work well with this problem. Other then that I not fully sure. Sorry if this wasnt much help in the end.

My game runs smooth and a solid 60 FPS on 4K except when something breaks in game like if I roll through a barrel or break a vase I get a massive FPS drop does anyone have a solution for this?

You extract all 12. Click the first file, then shift click file 12 to highlight them all. Extract and you'll get the file that I placed in disc folder in the video.

It must be some sort of input problem. Is your using a controller double check to see if its registering in the emulator.
You can also try to set the input device to a different option and try that as well.

@@Good_Hunter55 sorry for my late reply. I'm working currently. Odd then the keyboard should work. Again might have to try some of the setting tweaks in the emulator. If not you might want to try to see if you can use a controller if you have one to see if its the emulator or not.

if its just a black screen then on the emulator go into configuration>GPU and under additional settings check mark the box that says "write color buffer" This should fix it.

lags way too much any solutions for this? ive switched to vulkan which helped. and i tweeked a few settings and it helped with the compiling shaders stutter but still its running unplayable.
usually thats some of the things I would have said to do but try changing some of the additional settings and if that doesn't help then it may just be the way your computer handles the emulator. Also sorry for a late reply, I've been stuck writing papers and finals.

What do you do if it says Failed to install trophy set
That's a new one to me so I'm not entirely sure. Does the game still load or is this failed message preventing it?
My best current guess would be something to do with initializing online trophy sync or something but I'm not sure.

Make sure to double check your config to make sure its setup right. Also if you could, list your computer specs, altho highly unlikely your computer may not handle ds rom but it does get me a better idea of what could be wrong.

Usually when I respond to these the first thing I'll ask is did you make sure to check the box for both the emulator and the Rom about write color buffers. If you did that and its still happening then I'm not sure what else could be causing it. The only other thing I would say is to try a different video setting like changing opengl to something else. That's about all I can say. This rom is still not optimized well.
