My review of the Mimiq from TC Electronics

  • Normally, I don't do reviews of products. Even more odd is for me to review another company's pedal. However, today I'm going to break that streak and have some fun with the Mimiq from TC Electronics. It's a very cool effect if you are running stereo. If you're in a praise and worship band and going direct in, you'd be crazy NOT to have this in your arsenal. It's also highly effective if you run two different amps as well. If you use it in mono, with just one amp, the effect won't be as great, it's true potential shines in stereo, IMO. I'm also using a Rat pedal from proco and a Torpedo C.A.B. from Two notes here.

      you are welcome, sir, & thanks for the thanks;
      btw, i must admit that i have never tried 1 of your pedals, mainly because the music store i frequently shop at, a large canadian chain, does not carry them;
      however, other stores in the area do carry your line, so i will go out someday, check them out &, with finances allowing, perhaps purchase 1 or more of your pedals...

      I have to agree with you Dave, Brian is definatly one of few that show a high level of professionalism in a sometimes competitive industry, sometimes, to the point of unneeded rude and destructive behavior. Kudos Brian, excellent review as well.

    As we are all gear junkies at heart, not excluding manufactures, people like yourself, that show that interest in others products, shows integrity in a world that lacks it in several areas, People like Brian, Robert, Josh and Tore are a blessing to the industry. I don’t mean to leave any other great designers out, These are just a few people who’s products I am familiar with and/or dealt with. Keep up the great vids Brian, Keep Rockin’ bro!

    Thanks for this video. All other ones didn't show the subtle differences between added tightness and wet/dry etc. Like some others mentioned it's really refreshing to see somebody honestly reviewing their "competitors". So much so that I'm going to be taking a hard look and listen at all your pedals now. I don't own a Wampler now but will soon.
    Great video, thanks!

    I've always been a big TC fan, since my first 2290! I stumbled upon this effect already in 2007, in their NovaSystem and it was really amazing! Essentially, there were two oscillators, distant only a few cents one each other and in total stereo front. And you could program whether to send the oscillators negative or positive, giving the impression of two separate guitar playerz. As soon as the Mimiq came out, I bought it blindly, trusting that they had improved their initial idea at top level...and so they did! Great Brian, with this video you celebrate one of the most important sound factory in the world AND demonstrate us how humble and fantastic you are! Soooo proud to have some of your products in my rigs!!!

      Think his patronage of other builders is where Josh from JHS got the idea from.
      Once you use a wet/ dry or just a stereo set up, it's tough going back.I do think there's still something special about a little 15 watt tube combo cranked.Tough call.

      @@garyharrison8891 Similar, definitely.I suppose " stereo" is the wrong term, but if the amps are significantly diff, it has that type of feel.I go between both, as, especially at lower volumes, the balance between wet/ dry can be a headache.I do prefer simple as possible, but I initially liked the dry without the necessary buffers, - many drives and fuzzes lose a lot combined with buffers.It's the two separate, different , amps that's the important thing.
      Peace.

    It reminds me of back in the day I would use the chorus on my amp but turn the the depth and speed down to zero. It had a very similar effect. I would use it for the same reason, to widen my sound when I was the only guitar player in a cover band.

    I've never played through one of these, but this is exactly the option that a Boss GT 8 gives you when you select two different amps to play through simultaneously, in its Dual L/R mode. If you have two 1-12 combo amps, you can add varying milliseconds of delay between them and it gives you an enhanced stereo field effect, and you suddenly have access to very Vai and Johnson-esque sounds. I think it's very cool that it ended up in a stand-alone pedal.

    Nice an proper demo!! I usually find that the best setting for a real double tracking effect is in position 1, and with "effect" full up, "dry" between 1 and 3 o'clock, and "tightness" between 1 and 4 o'clock. Our earscheat us making us think the sound comes from the quickest source (that's left, "dry"), so by turning that one down a notch we experience a full leveled stereo image.
    It's also good to put both amps as separated as you can, because if they're very close you'll get more of a blurred sort of chorused/short slap effect.
    I'm having plenty of fun putting this thing in the Orange Rocker 32 stereo effects loop, and with two mikes my guitar sounds huge through the PA system in my gigs!
    Hope it helps!

    Question for you Brian. I've done a similar thing in my rig. First using a 100% wet delay on one side and later I used the Strymon DECO which has a Wide Stereo Mode (the implementation isn't the same, but same thing fundamentally). The problem I ran into was how to incorporate stereo effects, particularly reverb. It seems like the obvious thing is to plug it in after a pedal like this, and I did that for a little while until I started noticing a hollowness to the reverb sound, a phase alignment issue perhaps. The stereo image was messed up. So then I did mono reverb before the pedal. That was okay ... the effect has a stereo image, but I was losing some control over the stereo features internal to the effect itself. I thought of other ways I might go, but would like to hear your take on that. Thanks.

    I saw Wampler Pedal and I knew I'd get a proper demonstration of this pedal, always love your videos and find them useful and informative. I think I am right to assume this, but wouldn't this pedal work well for me since I use a stereo setup? I don't use two amps but I use a rack preamp>rack FX>stereo out>stereo power amp> left-right cabs. I'd stick this pedal on the output of my FX before going into the power amp. • @kingmafw
      @kingmafw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. The boss MZ-2 was probably one of the first digital pedals of Boss. The MZ-2 has a doubling knob counting from I to III. Using a short delay to create "air" in your guitar tone. The only difference is that the MZ-2 uses the doubler with distortion. Without the pedal engaged it doesn't work. Like Deadastronaut said it's like the Haas effect.

      That’s a great question, and it cold really be either way. Sometimes it’s fun to run two different types of gain pedals into two totally separate amps, and other times you may just want some sort of stereo effect, so the answer is really “it depends!”

  • @Watchinganothervideo
    @Watchinganothervideo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really wanted to enjoy the Mimiq, but I had really bad problems with odd artifacts jumping quite abruptly across the stereo field, I had sudden loss of top end with quite dramatic phase canceling all in all not a pleasant sound. This was especially noticeable on acoustic clean sounds. I thought it was a really good idea, but the realization of the idea just did not 'cut the mustard' for me in the product. I got a far better effect from splitting the signal and putting a very small delay and a Digitech Luxe on one side. that aside, I thought it was very refreshing and professional to see a manufacturer discussing another companies products in a good critical manner.

    When we run stereo, our sound guy just delays one of the channels by a few milliseconds to get this effect. Not a bad idea for a pedal though. Just don't think it'll be taking up space in too many pedal boards in a church setting.

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s not the same thing. That would be more like a slapback type effect. It does thicken things up, but the Mimiq is working differently than that.

    • @MatthewHarmon
      @MatthewHarmon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The TC is actually doing a lot more than that. Imagine if your sound guy was _dynamically_ manipulating that delay as well as _dynamically_ making minor adjustments to the "tuning," and then running it through a stereo separation algorithm. Many of these techniques are "standard" ideas, but it was really a stroke of genius to build them all into a single pedal. Tons of fun.

    +Wampler Pedals great video! I have a Katana 50w- does the Mimiq need an effects loop to do its doubling? I agree the Mimiq is probably best in a stereo setup with 2 amps, but will it work at all if I put it in front of my Katana 50w (a 1x12)?

    Your the MAN Brian ! To see you review someone else's gear you must be a total gear head..... Worse than me !
    I would still rather hear it used with the Pinnacle though.... Cause that's why I would by it.

    To me it sounds much like the "Detune" from Zoom when using stereo amps/recording. I use that quite often for over 20 years now. Do you agree Brian, or is it something completely different?

    Im confused where to put a delay pedal with this pedal in the chain. Whether stereo in into a delay pedal? Or a mono delay pedal before the doubler?

    Hello, thanks for the demo Brian, i have this pedal on my pedalboard and i've read something on the TC site that if you were using the overdrive channel of your amp and not pedals to create your overdriven tone, it was better to put the Mimic on your loop? What do you think about it? In fact, i'm playing on a Mesa Triple rectifier and i'm using the three channels but i also have some overridden pedals such as the Tumnus, The Clarksdale, TS-808, a tone bakery double creme and i'm controlling all that stuffs with a one control, where is the best position for it, as i've putted it at the very end of my signal..or at the very end of the effect loop???

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Olivier Troupin that's a tough one. My personal opinion is that it sounds best with two amps, and with your other pedals and since you use the amps gain channels you would want to put it in the effects loop.... which means you would need to take the other input into the effects return of a different amp for best sound

      I also have a Randall NB King 100, it's a Nuno Bettencourt signature model, so i could run in stereo...the problem is the transport of all that stuffs for live shows!!!! And i'm not an expert in connecting things at the right place, although till now everything looks to sound good, the problem is with my controller( One Control Crocodile Tailloop) everything is connected to it, so running some stereo effects and managing it in a loop is a little bit tricky for me.....That said, just know that all my Wampler are for me the best pedals i've ever owned and for sure they will never leave my board!!!

    Problem is it really does seem to effect the guitars tons quite a bit. Do you think you could run an EQ pedal in front of it to compensate or would you need two eq pedals to run in front of each amp after splitting the signal with the mimiq?

  • @drewdemaio4162

    I currently use a TC Electronic MIMIQ Doubler pedal for my current dual mono rig to split the signal to two amps and give me that bigger sound but I've been wanting to try a wet/dry setup. I'm not sure if this pedal makes sense for wet/dry as it seems to be designed for stereo use. If I run my wet effects through the MIMIQ, will that just sound TOO lose being that the MIMIQ is only effecting my wet affects? (Chorus, tremolo, reverb delay) Any help would be really appreciated!

  • @TheBaconWizard

    I would consider buying this but have a question: How low can you go? I notice that some pedals (eg chorus) cut the bottom end of the guitar which for me is a no-go as I am down-tuned. How is this pedal with more bassier tunings and tones?

    But why is it panned so much to the left?

    • @sonidojamon
      @sonidojamon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Because, despite of being at the same level, our ears trick us by making us think the sound comes from the quickest source (thats the "dry" one). The effect signal is a bit delayed, therefore it looks that it sounds lower (but its not!)
      Thats why TC put different level controls on each signal, and I have found out that you have to turn down the "dry" signal till you get a leveled and full stereo image.
      I learnt this from my DAW tricks by making a stereo guitar with one track, copying the track, panning left and right, and putting a small delay (20-30ms) on one of them. I found out that you get a leveled stereo image when you turn down the undelayed signal between 3 to 6 dBs

      To be honest , i don't like the stereo-effect , but another possibility ....
      could be by using 2 different distortions , connected in parallel

      Actually, I thought it was odd that the sound was coming from the left side as well and looked at the meters on my Ensemble and saw the left side was much much louder than the right. It does it when he is playing dry as well. Seems it was a setting discrepancy in the Torpedo.

    Hi Brian. Did you tried this pedal in mono? Just hear this video in mono, you can hear the flanger effect. Probably this pedal makes Haas Psychoacoustic effect, with phase side effects in mono.

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IMO, not used best in mono. The magic is when using it in stereo.

    • @SuperBatiskaf
      @SuperBatiskaf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I understand, but Haas effect not ideal for stereo emulation, because of phase side effects. The mono control very useful for side effects identification, because our brain makes the same conversion with two stereo channels.

    • @SuperBatiskaf
      @SuperBatiskaf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I think for good stereo you dont need two amps/cabs, the one stack will be enough. put three mics (shure 57, 87 and 68) closely to the speakers on axis. put the 87 to the left on your console, 57 to the right, 68 on the middle. the side channels - minus 15db, middle minus 12db

    • @petejt
      @petejt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds flangey in mono because the stereo field is collapsed, causing the comb filtering of the differently phased signals. Run it in stereo and you hear the effect without the artefacts.

    thanks. my knee jerk reaction is TC paid you, or are involved in manufacture or distribution of your brand. that's how the world works. that didn't set right this time. i believe this is an exception to that "rule". it's like you were hearing that accusation while you were recording this. you seemed to have a "pissing in the fan" air you were struggling with. glad you didn't overthink it and went on give a video i find very useful. you gained my respect. i will certainly take a closer look at your products. I wonder if TC will ever do a Wampler plug. maybe a toneprint with you name on it?

      +hr jr I’m not sure, but my videos are not a “tit for tat” type thing. I love pedals, so I talk about them. The pedal builder community is small, and we are all friends, but the only reason I did this video is purely and simply to inform, educate, and entertain those interested in pedals in any fashion. I don’t subscribe to the idea that I will only talk about MY pedals. That’s just too shallow of an idealogy for me personally. Regardless, I hope you liked the video.

    • @hrjr2283

      yeah. that comes through in your videos. it takes a LOT of enthusiasm to develop AND utilize the guitar playing, sound and electrical engineering skills you possess. passion is the right word. how you run a business and make these videos in addition to this seems superhuman. that has to require structure and self discipline that does not usually accompany such passion. time certainly must be precious commodity in your life. thanks for sharing some of that with us. Happy holidays to you and yours!

    Never managed to decide wether the Mimiq should go right after the preamp(s) before delay and reverb (running in stereo) or just before hitting the stereo power amp I m using. Seems like mimiq right after the preamp(s) sounds more logical.... couldn’t get a feeling while trying both

    Notice when on clean near the end that there is some weird change in stereo placement? Am I the only person who has noticed this? I'm not sure this pedal is good for clean quieter parts if it glitches like that.
