Citroen e-SpaceTourer - The return of the MPV?

  • Back in the 1980s, the people carrier, or MPV, was the simple answer to those with a big family, or the need to carry lots of children around. Cars like the Renault Espace, Toyota Spacecruiser, Chrysler Voyager and Mitsubishi Spacewagon were just the start of a genre that would be a common sight on the roads. Of course, nowadays, the SUV has taken over as the family car of choice, leaving many manufacturers unwilling to develop what is essentially, the more sensible choice of family transport. Even Renault doesn't engineer its fabulous looking new Espace for the UK as it knows that it just wouldn't sell enough to justify engineering a RHD one. Thankfully, Citroen feels differently, and it even offers its SpaceTourer with a full electric powertrain. But how does it stack up? We put it through the AutoEV road test to find out.

I have driven over 300 cars over the years and have to admit that I really like my diesel Spacetourrr which I have now used for 50k and 4 years. There is loads of space aand all seats are man sized even the 3rd row. It drives well and has a soft quiet ride and mine gets 45 mpg on a long run. Weak points are the lack of grab handles to get in and out,, the too low geared steering that lacks feel and the terrible hooter. I also agree about the cheap steering wheel. On mine I get lots of compliments on the ride. I like that it is only 1.9m high so can get into carparks that its VW competitor cannot. I am so happy with mine that I just ordered a new one. Don't go near the Vauxhall vrrsion without checking the spec carefully as there are many detail reductions in spec, e.g. you dont get the full rail seats or 17 inch wheels and they dont all get aircon plus a few other key things are missing.

Interesting to know about the Vauxhall variant, so thanks for that. Perhaps the ride is hampered by the additional weight of the batteries? Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.

In the long version, the distance between axles is the same. Greetings from Switzerland

It’s a good thing Sat Nav is not included. Most car Sat Navs are useless compared to google maps on the phone.

So to get into the rear row you have to flip the middle row single seat on the drivers side ? Passengers in the rear getting out into the road not onto the kerb ?

Our space tourer is coming up to three years this year.It is a different MPV than this car.We have the 1.5 Turbo diesel I like to see ours with batteries. The car you are testing would be to big for us.We have the 7 seaters mainly for the big boot for our disability buggy.I really like our car and I have driven many cars also. The seats are very comfortable the gear change is smooth.A bit sharp on the clutch and brakes.I am looking around for an E.V.Unless we keep our car a other year on the motability scheme.I haven't seen anything better yet for us.E.V or combustion engine.

‪Why isn’t the e-SpaceTourer offered with the e-Dispatch van’s larger 75kWh battery pack in the UK like it is in other markets?

No idea! It would make a difference though.

If you had to pick between this or the e-traveller what would you pick? Which is the nicest to drive

We haven't driven the e-Traveller as yet, although given the similarities, I'd say it would be a close thing. If anyone has driven both, let us know. What is the better option?
