It seems of what Caddy did hear, he didn't hear about the main draw of this game: As the days progress, the game's textures/audio/etc. become more and more corrupted (on purpose). For instance, the soundtrack is actually only several audio loops. However, they are morphed relative to area and day progress. Textures just go insane. Just as well, the game throws more random events at you, which can come out of nowhere and leave the player uncertain of just what this game CAN do. The city has some pretty disturbing stuff later on. It's actually really interesting. Another important point which of course he wouldn't know just diving into it: That gray man he saw is The Gray Man, as coined by players. He's actually one of the few anchor points of this game, having an actual effect on your game and presenting a hindrance to "progress." If he touches you, he will clear your Dream Journal, which among other things resets your progress on achieving the above random events and interesting self-corruption. He should be avoided at all costs, preferably by backing away. While more common in later days, he will sometimes respawn directly in front of the player if already existing in the map, so backing away keeps him from surprising the player. The color of the transitions between each map also hold significance. Three primary transitions are white is average, blue is good, and red is bad. (There are other colors documented, but these seem most common and definite in effect) While the exact meanings are only speculation, the dot on your Dream Journal will be placed relative to these. The words Upper/Downer/Static/Dynamic across the lengths of the journal actually work as a graph of this information. Also, days range from wandering the environments, to Japanese text, to trippy videos. Most of the time, you wander environments. I'd say the text and videos are a free pass to skip a day, although it might be more like Pokemon whereas you could use a rare candy to skip a level, but you don't get as good stats for it... In the end, while he did present screenshots of the game at extreme day counts, whereas the corruption had become immense, I can't say the final judgement was exactly fair. Putting aside that it was the early days, since as he stated the pacing was slow to get into, the major issue was The Gray Man touching him - twice. This reset the game's random events, thus leaving him with a less eventful experience. The main draw is to reach amplifications of corruption and events, avoiding The Gray Man's (honestly) bullshit resetting ability. I wouldn't expect him to push hundreds of days in this for a single video, but I feel he judged it a bit too quickly considering the circumstances, and moreover premise of the game. the reason why he hated lsd so much is because he was looking at it as a game rather than an experience. lsd is an experience. you wander around and see where it takes you. if you look at it as a game, it becomes kinda shitty and pointless. games have goals and context and things to do. in lsd, it's just wander with an open mind and try not to go insane. gameplay wise, it's supposed to be terrible. if you run into a wall and link somewhere, just go with it. you can't get angry at a game with no rules.
Children, your minds are too precious and innocent to bestow among this! Please, avert thine eyes, avert thine eyes, children. Be Gone! AND AVERT FROM THIS TRAVESTY!!
At 7:04 the Japanese translates to something a little like: "It is being chased by someone who is being chased. It's like an organization. There is a retired old man at the small clothes store there, and it hides me being chased. However, I will continue to be chased by the enemy." Correct me if I'm wrong.
For the time being though, I think Yume nikki does kind of a simular thing, but is a bit more managable & entertaining. It's an RPG maker game, so it isn't as realized as it could, but it's still really trippy & finding all the things you can in the game is pretty fun.
***** I believe it will be released. What I'm worried about is the quality. When I thought back to how the Flashback system works in this game, I realized the game must work on a form of seed system. I thought the revamp should use seeds for generating maps, with larger numbers resulting in the higher corruption rate. However, he wasn't enthusiastic about the idea, in relation to custom content specifically. To me personally, I think user content would greatly retract from the feeling of the game. How can you feel surprise/wonder when you've gone and installed the content, yourself? Just my opinion...
You didn't mention the fact that the game came with a CD and a book. The book is where the game is given a lot of context. I really love this game for what it was and of course respect your opinion, but I think you were trying too hard to find the "point" or an objective.
Stevean2 Exactly, he emulated. emulating, or even getting a second hand copy of a game can hinder the full experience of the game. you dont get booklets and its might be glitchy relative to the original game. Also I would be very interested in what the text during the not really level nights said. That might have something to do with it.
8:33 "AAH! ADULT! I NEED AN ADULT! GET AWAY FROM ME!" 8:40 "Phew, at least that nightmare's over. I can relax now-AAH! ANOTHER ADULT AH-DEH-DUH...TWO! TWO ADULTS! I NEED TWO ADULTS RIGHT NOW!"
I hate to be that guy, but this was a terrible Caddy review. I'm usually really into his reviews, but he completely missed the point of the game. Yes, I know he went into this game blind but that was stupid and pointless thing to do. Especially when he brought up the fact that the developers meant to make the game disorienting and confusing. If you read something like that, then that should be credence to look up on how the game works mechanic-wise instead of jumping into it and complaining about every minute thing. Here's the thing about LSD, it's technically not a game. As the late great JewWario said in his review, "It's more of an experience". And that's true, this isn't a game at all. It's an experience, you go from area to area viewing things happening. Sometimes its crazy things, sometimes its not. It's like an actual dream, you never know what you're going to get when you go to sleep. It's the same with the game, it's a different experience each time you play. And the longer you go with out running into the Grey Man (Who can be avoided by backing up) the more your dreams will build up and the crazier they will get. Caddy should have did what he did with Mr. Domino and looked up how the game worked. That was a good review because Caddy was well-educated on how to play and properly use the mechanics of the game. Here he was not. He jumped into a game despite being given clear warning that it was disorienting and confusing, complained about it despite the fact that he barely played the game for what must have been no more then a few hours (Ten days pass fast in the game) and posted a video review online despite the fact that he never really gave the game a chance. I'm all for differing opinions, but I always dislike when an opinion misses the point of the whole thing. Caddy went into this expecting a game and instead got an experience. I'm not an LSD: Dream Emulator fanboy, but I do have to admit that this game is a lot more unique then Caddy gives it credit for.
Oh hush, the review was fine. He already said it doesn't matter if he "knows" what the game is about, he and pretty much everyone else watching this dont' care about that, we want a game. This is a walking simulator with goofy pictures thrown at you and he reviewed it accurately, a boring walking simulator with stupid visuals, 6.5 out of 10. And going off that, an "experience" isn't any kind of excuse for being bad, plenty of games are great at providing unique interesting experiences while still delivering on competent game design and being in general enjoyable. This game is lacking in both areas and he judged it accordingly.
***** Did I say that I didn't think it should be criticized? Everything can be criticized, that's the point. I'm okay with criticism, but I think criticism should be pointed at something when the reviewer understands what it is and how to play it. It's like when that IGN guy reviewed Alien Isolation. And how would Caddy know how much content is in the game when he barely played it? He gave up on the game after a couple of hours, he barely gave this game a thorough shot.
Totalblue *****: Judging something as something it is not is the same as calling a painting bad because it is not a novel. What you are doing is essentially saying "a bad novel is still a bad novel even if it is a painting."
Painocus Damn straight. It's like treating a flight simulator as an RPG. This game is an experience, and should be treated as such. It's basically a simulator designed around dreams. Caddy expected too much from this game because of what he heard and based all of his frustrations upon that fact.
Idea: LSD dream emulator remastered. HD graphics, more interactive dreams, longer time for each day, loose plot hinted at in your dreams, dreams are made from random resources strewn together, the dreams you go to are correlated to the object that sent you, and walls don't send you to new dreams.
Akiva Sugg but it only works as an art piece on a game console so in that sense it does belong, not defending it just saying your point is a bit...well...null and void really
I don't think Caddy gets this game. At all. It's supposed to be random. Heck, the whole game is randomized, after all. The whole point is literally what you can see. It's like Caddy wants there to be a story or a point to the game. Well, that would defeat its purpose.
Well it's not just all random. Depending on what you tutch in the game, effects the outcome of the dreams. So you do have control of the game in a way. Caddy just didn't know how the game worked, beacuse he did not read up on it before playing it, kinda missing the point and not giving it a fair chanse. :P
Children! Your minds are too precious and innocent to bestow upon this! Please, avert thy eyes! Avert thy eyes! Children, begone and avert from this crevasty!!!!!!
This lady's dreams are definitely weird, yet boring. At least my weird dreams have stuff like G1 transformers and massive amounts of scorpions and spiders. Gosh I want to forget that one.
At least your dreams don’t involve your family talking shit about you behind your back while you’re busy taking care of the family alligator ranch… … yeah we raised alligators for some reason.
Thom Mensink Yeah I've tried it and he sums up the problems really well. The graphics hold it back, there's no real rules to what happens so you just run around hoping to see something interesting, and the footstep sound effects are grating. If someone were to take a crack at it nowadays I can't imagine any of those problems being present.
15:50 "I'm now in some kind of never-ending hallway, and I think I can see something at the end of it." I think this game has started to turn caddy insane...
I would really love a remake of LSD, more content, more worlds and vastly improved graphics. I mean, this game is FAR from perfect, it's hard to call it "good" either, but holy hell it was an interesting experiment, this was waaaay ahead of it's time, and I really have to appreciate that.
I can't really say that Cadi "missed the point of the game", but I will say he was incredibly closed minded towards it's premise. Anyone can see that it's an artsy-fartsy game, but it does have things that one should pick up on. The types of things you touch directly correlate to what you see, which is literally the entire game. Psychic Detective worked in much a similar fashion, having to go through different POV's to receive different endings, and he was much more lenient when reviewing that game. LSD is by far not a great game, but it definitely is an innovative and interesting one.
This game is so fucking weird with visuals, music, everything. The fact that literally you can touch anything to get teleported anywhere, lack of direction and SENSE makes it so disorienting... ...I kinda wanna play this now. And make sense of it. And want my brain to be minced into a nice Big Mac. Which I can then eat. With my mouth.
I mean, I imagine it's kinda like "touching one thing will transport you to the same co-ordinate in another world". That would be my explanaion why Caddi was stuck in a wall that one time.
Whatever you do, avoid The Gray Man. Caddy saw him twice in this video. He resets your Dream Journal, which resets the systems that basically progress you through the game. That is, the game progressively corrupts itself, as well as introducing new events, as the days go on. The Gray Man resets this, which means starting over. Basically, you won't see how deep the rapid hole goes since The Gray Man pulls you back to the top. When running from him, it's best to do it via backing away. While this happens more often in higher day counts, the game likes to respawn him immediately in front of you if you run away with him out of sight, so keeping a line of sight on him keeps him walking at the slow pace.
***** To my knowledge the object and color effect how the place you go to behaves. That's why his transition screens weren't always the same color, the colors represent different moods or something like that.
6:55 the way that chart works is this: UPPER the dot will move up depending on where you were when it ended. (Stairs, ramps) LOWER is vice versa of upper. STATIC is If you don't see anything move, DYNAMIC is like the lion he saw at 6:40.
Alex The Kaiser Look up a TH-camr named Azuritereaction (He moved to "AzuriteYT"). He was a major contributor in LSD's TH-cam popularity, and found a copy of Easter Mind. I'm sure if you check his video descriptions or external posts, you'll find a link to the game.
***** holy crap, someone else is looking for them!? I talked to Mr. Sato and asked him about his roly poly games and he said he had no idea where to get a copy unfortunately
You know, maybe you were right to scare away the children. Depending on how you go through dreams, you can get different textures loading. You got the Kanji set You can also get the _sexual dreams_ set Yeah
I'm sorry Caddy but I didn't like this video I did like your humor like usual but I think most of your complaints could have been avoided by doing some research on the gameplay (for ex how if you touch the Gray Man all of your dream progress are erased and that's why you kept ending up in the same places; and how it's not really hard to get the really weird and trippy dreams, the more days you go on dreaming without touching the Gray Man the freakier and weirder they get) You're still one of my favourite youtubers though and I love your videos, so keep up the good work! ^^
He knows how the game works, he quit day 10 because it's a boring bland game to play and obviously isn't enjoyable at all. He's not playing a game for randomness, he's playing it cause he wanted a game.
Totalblue It has been shown in multiple comments here that he did not understand completely how the game works (which you have clearly read since you post on many of them.) Fuck off, will ya.
Caddi, your kind of missing a lot. You touch certain objects to go across the map, from what I can remember it's: Moving objects take you more to dynamic areas, Stuff that doesn't move take you more to static areas. And touching certain colored things take you to darker/downer dreams while brighter stuff takes you to more upper areas. Also the fact that the Shadow Man erases your progress, and resets how trippy the game can get. He's probably the reason (besides touching just random everything) you got to the same areas.
***** It's a lot like old SNES and NES (but more NES) games that don't tell you crap in game, and expet you to figure it out yourself. Though I wouldn't be surprized if burried in the LSD Dream Emulator manuel's Japanese text there is instructions.
True, I still rewatch these old videos and I've been subscribed since these were new videos. Even if the "analysis" of the games isn't profound or anything, the goofy humor still makes me smile.
Back in May 2020, there was an English fan patch released. Although, playing the game in a language like Japanese makes the whole thing even more trippy and confusing, which actually makes it more fun.
Fun fact, the water only flashes on emulated versions of the game. If you play a real copy it loads properly.

the reason why he hated lsd so much is because he was looking at it as a game rather than an experience. lsd is an experience. you wander around and see where it takes you. if you look at it as a game, it becomes kinda shitty and pointless. games have goals and context and things to do. in lsd, it's just wander with an open mind and try not to go insane. gameplay wise, it's supposed to be terrible. if you run into a wall and link somewhere, just go with it. you can't get angry at a game with no rules.

One of my favorite PS1 games, didn't think Caddy was gonna review it, i thought it was too obscure for him.
The "Revamp" a fan is making might have sparked comment chains bringing Caddy back into it.
MegaScience Yeah, i heard of it, but i have little hope that it will ever be released
MegaScience Agreed.
It's supposed to simulate dreams.

You didn't mention the fact that the game came with a CD and a book. The book is where the game is given a lot of context. I really love this game for what it was and of course respect your opinion, but I think you were trying too hard to find the "point" or an objective.
Stevean2 by looking it up? research...
Stevean2 Exactly, he emulated. emulating, or even getting a second hand copy of a game can hinder the full experience of the game. you dont get booklets and its might be glitchy relative to the original game. Also I would be very interested in what the text during the not really level nights said. That might have something to do with it.
Stevean2 there isn't a "story"... that's my point.
Stevean2 the point is to NOT understand it. its a dream. are your dreams always coherent? its just weird and different.

All I know is just watching this, I'd get ill with all the flashing and sounds. Ugh
I agree completely.

Already being worked on.
Making the nightmare real... good work
As soon as River Twygz Bed turned on during day 10 the nightmarish images began to sink in...
Indeed.
No doubt
I think you missed the point. This game isn't supposed to have a point.
***** It's not necessarily meant to be fun. It's a piece of artwork. It is an emotional experience.
Well then it doesn't belong on a video game console.
Akiva Sugg but it only works as an art piece on a game console so in that sense it does belong, not defending it just saying your point is a bit...well...null and void really
This game has no point, that means that he didn't miss the point as there is no point to miss.
QuasarTheEpic The point is that it has no point. He misunderstood it's purpose as a piece of art.
I don't think Caddy gets this game. At all. It's supposed to be random. Heck, the whole game is randomized, after all. The whole point is literally what you can see. It's like Caddy wants there to be a story or a point to the game. Well, that would defeat its purpose.
But the fact that it has no purpose makes it unrewarding to play. I think he understands it perfectly.
That is not an excuse for poor gameplay.
It might have work, the idea, but it's just a bad game
Beato the Golden It's not really a 'game', technically. I mean, yeah, you can play it, but it's more an interactive art piece.
Well it's not just all random. Depending on what you tutch in the game, effects the outcome of the dreams. So you do have control of the game in a way. Caddy just didn't know how the game worked, beacuse he did not read up on it before playing it, kinda missing the point and not giving it a fair chanse. :P

I would really love a remake of LSD, more content, more worlds and vastly improved graphics. I mean, this game is FAR from perfect, it's hard to call it "good" either, but holy hell it was an interesting experiment, this was waaaay ahead of it's time, and I really have to appreciate that.
Too bad it fell completely flat on it's face, hopefully if someone makes a game they'll be able to look at this and see what not to do.
Totalblue Honestly, this is my third favroite game ever.

Actually there are some rules to the dreams you experience. It depends on what you touch. It will determine the kind of dream that you have.
While this happens more often in higher day counts, the game likes to respawn him immediately in front of you if you run away with him out of sight, so keeping a line of sight on him keeps him walking at the slow pace.
....you can eat a Big Mac? Hory shet.
***** To my knowledge the object and color effect how the place you go to behaves. That's why his transition screens weren't always the same color, the colors represent different moods or something like that.

I'm sorry Caddy but I didn't like this video
I did like your humor like usual but I think most of your complaints could have been avoided by doing some research on the gameplay (for ex how if you touch the Gray Man all of your dream progress are erased and that's why you kept ending up in the same places; and how it's not really hard to get the really weird and trippy dreams, the more days you go on dreaming without touching the Gray Man the freakier and weirder they get)
You're still one of my favourite youtubers though and I love your videos, so keep up the good work! ^^
Totaly agree. I kinda think he chould remake this video, seeing how many of his problems are just him not knowing how the game works.
This was a game made before you could look up things like that on the internet. How are you supposed to know that's what's going on?
Herp Mcderpington Ever heard of the concept of a manual?
Caddi, your kind of missing a lot. You touch certain objects to go across the map, from what I can remember it's:
Moving objects take you more to dynamic areas,
Stuff that doesn't move take you more to static areas.
And touching certain colored things take you to darker/downer dreams while brighter stuff takes you to more upper areas.
Also the fact that the Shadow Man erases your progress, and resets how trippy the game can get. He's probably the reason (besides touching just random everything) you got to the same areas.
***** Admitably, I wouldn't be surprized if they didn't tell you that in game. But I'm just saying, if your this confused, look something up!
***** It's a lot like old SNES and NES (but more NES) games that don't tell you crap in game, and expet you to figure it out yourself. Though I wouldn't be surprized if burried in the LSD Dream Emulator manuel's Japanese text there is instructions.
