    "Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

    I would add two pontoons for balance and that would give more balance and a walk around deck possibly. It is a cute concept regardless as for refitting old boats and making miniature lake campers. Definitely ballast stones are needed under the floor and making the back sitting area longer for comfortable fishing or daytime photography. Definitely add a safety feature too, floating life vest and lighting the front back and sides with led lighting and a foghorn.

    Recycled tire weights melted and poured into a composite likeness mold in the the shape of the center to front v keel since you’re adding more weight to the rear eventually. Interesting undertaking as usual. For space and ballast, probably the most efficient product at nearly zero cost. Rename it “BLUE BOBBER”

  • @HOOAHDUDE

    Nice video. I would like to see the back area having a tent like cover like yachts have on top and this way you have a bigger sleep area length wise. In the front of the big window put a a real wooden ship steering wheel. I suggest putting some pontoons on both sides for stability and style I suggest that you name the boat "Tiny Rocker."

  • @lethaleefox6017
    @lethaleefox6017 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Saw that little boat you were going to use for a base... you should have tested how buoyant the boat base is/was... fill the basic boat with enough rocks to sink it, then take the rocks out and weigh them to see what the maximum weight it can float without sinking... otherwise you might over build the house part.

  • @AwakeLazarus
    @AwakeLazarus ปีที่แล้ว +10

    If you make it like a catamaran style, you can stabilize the build more and could pull off adding a second floor, as well as the space between the pontoons and the boat could be turned into a porch.

    • @AwakeLazarus
      @AwakeLazarus ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also you can make a round boat and tie it to the back as 'the shed'.

    If you can add on....then maybe a couple of pontoons on each side to increase stability and increase usable floor space. If you put a wood burning stove in it, then put the wood in the bottom of boat which will help weight down and balance better. This is gonna be fun. Are you planning on renting out your buildings you build as unique airbnb?

    Make the boat into a Erie Canal river boat with attached side tanks to help floatation. The side tanks could be covered with wood that you could walk along and pole your boat down the river. Check out the old Davy Crockett 1950's TV series of him and his sidekick friend and arch enemy propelling their river boats with long poles.

    Regarding your elbow affliction - medial epicondylitis, there are several things you can do to help the pain. 1. Take anti inflammatory medication like advil or Al eve, as long as you aren’t allergic. 2. A lineament like you used or something like Icey Hot may offer some relief. 3. Probably most effective is a wrist splint to rest those tendons. It should be worn day and night. 4. Physical therapy and acupuncture may also help a bunch. Best of luck to you. Look forward to the next installment.

    definitely needs pontoon stabilizers. maybe keel extension ridge on the underside about an inch or two should help. especially if the wind comes up and you are out on a lake. ballast weight might also help. storing powerpacks under the floor in the storage compartment could help with that. the addition of outriggers might provide a good area for a walk around deck for fishing. love the video.

  • @henrikstenlund5385
    @henrikstenlund5385 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great project. Just remember that the center of mass should be as low as possible to avoid it tipping over. Maybe a heavier keel?
    On the other hand, this kind of boats have floats in the structure. They are supposed to keep it floating if it is filled with water. Have you calculated the lifting force of the current floats? What will be the total weight? If the floats are not sufficient, maybe you can add some sort of side floats to keep it afloat.
    Also it came to mind that since the walls seem a bit high, they will pose quite a large sail surface and the boat will be sensitive to winds. If you have a keel, you can use that for true sailing. Then you might need a rudder too.

    In lieu of the underlayment for siding, look into "poor-man's fiberglass". It's basically canvas soaked in wood glue lain over foamboard, then coated in an all-weather paint. I have seen several micro-campers made from it, including one that can be towed behind a Vespa. This can possibly be used for structural members as well. It should cut down on the overall weight above the boat hull, lowering the center of balance.

    6:33 I haven't finished the video yet so you may have already addressed your plans for "number one and number two," but while we're offering tips, I have a pitch. Since space is at such a premium on your tiny houseboat, I would suggest a collapsing portable commode and solid waste disposal bags. I just recently got one for my car camping setup and find it to be very convenient-it feels very sturdy and folds down into a smaller form factor. The bags that come with a dry powdered enzyme (like the Restop 2 for example, among some cheaper brands on Amazon) basically dry out your poop and break it down, such that you can seal the bag up (it's double-bagged) and there is very little smell to deal with until you have the chance to throw it away (safe to put right in the trash). They also make urinal bags as well, but they don't do much that an empty water bottle can't do, besides maybe make you feel civilized lol.
    I'm sure you could even make a collapsing commode out of wood just like the store-bought ones if you were feeling particularly motived! lol
    Maybe "The Ridgeline Rambler" for the boat's name? Or the "Timber Rambler," like a play on timber rattler? "River / Riverine / Riverain / Riverian / Riparian Rambler?" I'm a sucker for rare adjectives. Just few things that came to mind anyways.

    Are you going to consider adding outriggers for stability and for "cool" storage?

  • @catgynt9148

    Weight on the bottom could be accomplished with a couple automotive batteries wired in parallel for your electric motor. If you want, a solar panel could be added to the roof for trickle charging the batteries. As others have suggested, foam outriggers and a layer of foam on the outer hull to add buoyancy.
    Please stay safe out there. Wishing you and Don and your families a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Peace Kevin

    That rear section could do with a canvas cover, something like a bimini top or how jeeps have a cloth top that still protects from the weather. It would give you more leg room for sleeping when the weather is nice. Narrow boats/canal boats often have the same type of thing to give protected enclosed space without needing solid construction.
    When you were looking at the rear of the roof I thought it was perfect for having a slide out section to allow for coverage to get all the way back with a hard top.

    You could have the sides of the boat fold out with those long locking hinges(the kind you would have for a fold out window) with a tarp cut to be fited around the foldout peice to act like a roof . Then add a floatation device underneath the foldout to stabilize the boat. This would help stabilize the boat and add storage room look a shelf. This can be done to one or both sides depending on your materials. Tldr. Add roofed foldout shelves to the sides of the boat.

    A composting toilet is your best option for a toilet. There's a risk of making it too top heavy and it would be impractical to add some kind of heavy keel, a centreboard like they have on really small sailing boats that you can drop down would help stabilise it or add outriggers, the latter would be the easiest and you could mount whatever decide to use to propel the boat to them.

    Take your favorite animal and call it Rambling (insert animal). I personally vote "Rambling Crow" or "Rambling Fox". Maybe Tipsy Rambler.

    (24:07) Rambl On (Sorry, I was just listening to some Led Zep)... and you name a boat by swinning a bottle of champagne and braking it on the boat! lol

    In regards to your elbow pain, my dad taught me a trick. Keep your arms straight when you're sleeping. If you bend them or curl them up underneath you it tends to aggravate the issue. I also take 500 mg of Naproxen (Aleve) twice a day to alleviate the inflammation. A brace called Band-it really helps when working, it helps prevent the tendon from sliding over that bone on the inside of your elbow. As with most soft tissue and repetitive motion injuries it takes a month or two... or three to go away. If the pain persists your doc may give you a script of Methylprednisolone to calm things down. Hope this helps and nice boat!

    You should add 2 pontoons to the side to stabilize it and keep it buoyant while adding more weight to it

    Ideas for the boat, multi functional furniture. best thing for a tiny space, would love to see that
    Name : Bart Fucket
    Joint pain: use honey mixed with apple vinegar, mix it 2 parts honey one part vinegar and eat a tablespoon 3x per day. It destroys joint pains

    Immediately from the support you made to work on the boat, i thought 2 barrels attached to the sides, possibly 2 on each side, would give you stability and some more floor space depending on how you wanted to go with it.

    I think you should put a small electric gyroscope I think its called, so your boat will rock a little bit less from side to side. Btw I love your videos!

    It seems very top heavy, like many have mentioned, some type of outriggers or pontoon kind of structure should help make the boat not just tip over or possibly sink if it's not buoyant enough

    I'd set it up so the doors in the back open up and extend the walls of the boat. So if the weather's bad you can still sit on the back and enjoy your self. And you need to set up a way yo keep the rain from running into the boat when the doors are closed. The water will come in under the doors.

    You need a weighted keel on bottom to keep it from being so tippy I’m sure you can make one that is removable like wedge fit

    @19:45 in....maybe install scrolling doors that, when open scroll arount to the outside of the boat. that way u can enclose the whole thing when u want but also have it open when u want with out having to figure out where to swing or hinge doors

    I had to laugh. When you had the red tape on the cardboard you were making for the bottom of the bed the tape shpe looked like this “ghost” spirit figures they show on the investigative shows where they ghost hunt. They are stick figures that move around. Pretty cool to watch Kevin & Don. You both amaze me the things you create. The SS scuttle plug. Don’t forget it! 🤣

    For the elbow, honestly rest it, keep it elevated, cool, and drink plenty water. You can try sage oil, which is extremely effective pure, but a lot of people are a bit scared of using it pure for reasons you will find out with some research, if you do consider it. It's a short term relief though.
    Boat looks great, seen an interesting idea where the rudder control is at the front, so you can see easier passed the sides, challenging yes, but I just thought it was cool.

    If that big propeller blade was heavier it would make a nice keel. Giving stability and maybe an upper crawl space to sleep.

    • @micahestep7679
      @micahestep7679 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thought exactly. A fold down propeller keel. It doesn't need to be heavy on such a small boat . It would offer resistance against the water to increase stability. Propellers have a curve in them though so it tend to want to go in circles.
