"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!
Ok Kevin….you can totally make a half loft at the top for sleeping & make a spiral staircase. Make a trap door in the floor, make a dumbwaiter. Some people want to go to Disney. I want to come to Canada & stay at the property. Every time I think you can’t top your last build you go & come up with something else amazing. Awesome job to you & Don. Can’t wait to see what comes next. 😊
That is exactly what I was going to say.
Disney would be nice one day and the other movie places. We need dreams eh?
Excellent Idea! I was thinking loft too. But I like your idea better!
What amazes & impresses me the most about you Kevin, is your vision! Holy cow! You start with something simple (spool) & turn it into a work of art. You and Don are a great team.
Don is the best! He is so patient with you when there are times when he cleary does not understand what the heck you are up too! What a great friend you have!
This one was really fun! I love watching you wield a chainsaw! So many options for finishing this. I look forward to what you do with it.
I can imagine how seeing that sit for four months must have been like an itch you couldn't scratch!
Another awesome build! Have you thought about making a video just doing a walk-through of all of your previous builds? You built quite a few projects on this channel over the years. Kudos to you and Don.
Waaay back in the 70s, we used wire spools, although much, much smaller, to make dining tables or end tables. We were SO cool! :)
Kevin this turned out really cool. You and Don did a great job. I think it would be great with a half loft with a spiral staircase and then on the bottom floor add a small table and a small chair that you build for the size of your daughter. Maybe a small toy box and then after you finish decorating inside how you want tell your daughter your giving it to her for a playhouse. Also build some safe stairs for her to get inside. Could you imagine the look on her face when you told her that. You’ve built everything under the sun you can think of, so far, except a playhouse for her. If you’d rather not give this one to her and want to keep for yourself then maybe your next project can be a playhouse for her or some type of fort.
Love it!! 😍 So creative. Cant wait to see the finished project, but the journey is definitely part of the fun. Thanks for the entertainment. Will be sharing. 😊
Kevin and Don, amazing work as always. Thanks for explaining the shingles without using math ❤ Can’t wait to see how things progress 🤗🤗🤗
You know what they say, "There are only three types of people. Those that get math and those that don't."
It looks like the rocket ship slides they had when I was a kid. You should install a slide as an emergency exit.
You could have attached a rope and made the worlds largest Yo Yo! Your builds are always one of a kind and informative!!! I liked the shingle making jigs!
Kevin and don at it again. Great video making the woods a great place to stay👍
What a beautifully done th-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU ! The instructions and the photographs are brilliant. It is thorough and genuinely informative. Ryan got another winner! No one does it better!
Regarding the metal top, did you run a grounding wire from the top to a metal stake in the ground? I would suspect that the big metal cone might attract lightening even though you are in a forest. Not seeing any sharks... but it was GREAT SEEING RACHEL in your prior video. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together enjoying your forest homestead. Peace Kevin.
Kev always builds the coolest forts. Just goes to show that men dont grow up they just grow old.
You and Don are the most interesting team on the Internet. I really love this spool castle.
Wow! What a beautiful house, you are showing off your unique skills, very interesting, have a nice day and great experience.
Glass block for each side when facing the door, so there's light but not too much, 1 window in the back, and a full glass door for the front. From what I hear also, 3-4 feet is an ideal space to put ship ladder steps in.
I built a cubby house for my kids out of one and an old tank stand. I took the middle and use the ends as a roof and floor, the joist were the wall frame and the planks filled in the walls. A window and a door and the kids loved it. They were the only kids in town, who had a round cubby house.
Luv it you are a creating a forest wonderland and it is great and you are the big elf along with you're helpers making a great rustic village of fun and art. Love you and the whole family of ELF'S.
I am loving this build! Would love to see your daughter's reaction to it because it looks like something a little girl would love! I will be joining you on the next one!!! 🙃🤗
The Moon and twinkly stars in the roof would be great! The platform for a bed or place to lounge would be neat if it was shaped like a cloud.
You and Don never cease to amaze me👍🏻🙂👏🏻
Yup: YOU are firing on all one cylinder!😇 There is a good bit of instruction here. If CHRIS thinks 'outside the box'; you think 'outside the big box store.' As a former farm boy, I'm thinking this would make a fine grain store: off the ground and away from vermin and with good ventilation.
You could use the roof part to make a bed area!
Great job Kevin and Don! Can't wait for this build to be finish.
A thought, and agreement, with others here.
Do a half loft, perhaps 3/4 if it will work, and place a ladder (instead of a staircase) to go with your rocketship motif.
A ladder climbing into a cockpit/sleeping area with stars on the ceiling.
Perhaps adding painted on glow-in-the-dark stars, as well as an electric star projector. There are even some out now that project nebulae onto the ceiling.
So you could have stars and nebulae to look at while laying in your bed/cockpit.
This is a lovely build.
You and Don are creating a magical structure. I love it!
Be Excellent to each other and Party on. Keep your stick on the ice. 🤘🎸😎🏒
That looks cool what you built. What I would do is just put one window on each side. Don't go too crazy with the windows.
I’d put a bed up there. And, a stove and custom couch and small table. It looks awesome 🤩
Everyone needs a buddy like Don
Please don't jump the shark. I love watching you build stuff, don't care what you build :).
Oooh get the machinery to cast starts up like a planetarium! Such a cool structure! 👍
What a cool build. Look for star pattern ideas, maybe create it from wood and add lights. Lights that won't create heat.
There are also glow in the dark stars, and planets.
Or a planetary light to shine on the ceiling. They illuminate the stars, moons and planets. Some rotate others are fixed.
Can't wait to see how you finish this build.
Great use of an old wooden reel.
Hey Kevin, Would love an update on the glass A frame when you get a chance.
Or even a video tour of all the buildings you have made to get a bit of an idea how they are all fairing with the elements.
Just started watching. Cool idea, but was thinking it is sort of too bad you didn't build four giant chairs to go around your big table! Lol.
I bet that mill has paid for itself by now. I'm always enamored when it makes an appearance, and that you can just make your own lumber 👍
Love your ideas and your imagination. I'm a millwork engineer and have got to build tons of cool things but you never stop amazing me with your builds. You are very smart setting yourself up with the mill and property with all the trees you could need. Great show oh and maybe put a loft bed in this one would be super cool and a wrap around deck with a outdoor kitchen. Maybe a dead waiter elevator for firewood?
Thanks for the content
That is fabulous 👌 I think a loft area in the cone would be perfect. Windows sound great. How about a wrap around deck on the outside with a secret area underneath accessible only from the inside 🤔
I can't wait to see what you dream up next! HI RACHAEL!!!!!!
You did a great job on the roof
The shake maker set up is impressive
Ive had to shingle turrets like that with ashvalt shingles. Its a mission
Wow that is going to be really cool Kevin. I cannot wait to see what the ending looks like.
The shingled roof turned out well! Cool pattern, Kevin 🥳🎊
Think you’ve gone from tiny house to minuscule house. A gnome home.
Looks like a giant pencil! Especially with the stainless steel “graphite” tip. Great build as always!
The designs that rattle around in that brain of yours .. impressive.
Just look at that huge pile of kindling for your fireplaces!
Too cool! Throw a deck around it, and if you could make a second one (or some other wire spool creation) then connect the two with a rope bridge.
Awesome video as always Kevin!! I have learned so much from. You !! Take care and stay safe my friend!!
Kevin: You are a unique individual. Interesting video.
These videos make my Saturday better!
That Level is Shot You can now use it for a 45* level .Hey Don, that Kevin gets you some nice jobs.😁Great Job you guys..
Yes. Yes you have. But it’s not the first time! 😊
Level?!! Kevin has a Dr. Seuss level! How can this not go anything but awesomesaucely?!!!
I like the wood shingles.
Your creativity is amazing. That property is awesome.
You are freaking amazing!!!!❤
you are a awesome person & builder!!!!!!!!!!
LOL ... Obviously both you & Don have been way too busy over summer & decided to take a break to have some fun eh? LOL ... I see you haven't lost your building touch after slacking off over summer! lol ... Glad to see you still have your humour! Great job - can't wait to see what you do on the inside ... lol ... always amusing & enjoy watching you come up with awesome designs for camping excursions! ❤
I think a good idea for your next big summer project would be a whole Ewok village…a bunch of buildings in the trees all connected with bridges 😁
A castle for the princess!
Look up spray paint space pictures. It’s easy and fun and I think it would make your rocket house look amazing
I never miss a video because you are AMAZING!!! Cannot wait to see when it's finished!
Real great project. I love the fact that this all started with a spool. I wondered how thin you could cut wood and bend it. Now it looks like the cylinder is covered with bacon, and who doesn’t love bacon. Your shake cutting thing was awesome and watching the saw cut them 4 at a time was fun. I am looking forward to more castle updates. Thank you so much for sharing!
I’d say your daughter has a very special dad. Hope this castle is for her to enjoy tea parties in
It certainly is.
Another great project!!!😊🎉❤ Whoot Whoot
So at the top make a sitting spot with lookout to view the stars and wildlife. That would be so cool and with your wit and innovative ideas. Or maybe next project u can add that in.
Love the much needed humor! 😂
Wow,,, you and Don are amazing,,,i wish my mind worked like yours!!!😊
Great video !
So much fun to watch 😀
Thank you for sharing your imagination and skills !
👏😀❤️
Another great project. Love it.
Strip lighting on the cone ceiling like the cube
Fine job Kevin and Don,and I have scrap wood to burn.👍😎
You are so creative always enjoy the content never disappointed. Have a goodnight and stay safe Jimmy from North Attleboro Massachusetts
You keep this up & you'll be selling tickets to your own amusement park. Which would be cool.
Next project: A building where the outside walls follow the slope of the land but make the floors inside level. Like a leaning tower of Pisa in the forest.
Ayyyyyyyyyyy no haven’t jumped the shark yet 🦈
It is spectacular !
I had gotten some wire spools about a decade or two ago to play with back before I put a canopy on my old truck. They weren't as big as this one... used them for picnic sized tables... in time I recovered the bolts and rods they were put together with... some did rot ... overtime they did disappear... They were interesting to play with...
It's probably too heavy at this point but it would be neat to put it on top of a merry-go-round so the view outside of the window could change.
Needs a spiral staircase along the wall
It would look awesome with an infinity ceiling! a lot of car tail lights do it with led and a mirror and it looks like its an ever ending tunnel of lights.
Hey Kevin and Don,
An idea I had while watching the video is to make a bunk bed or maybe a solid hammock in the cone as a bed. I don't know if it would be possible to lay down straight from side to side (head to toe), but I don't know anyone who sleeps perfectly straight, so I don't think that would matter. Just an idea for ya Kevin.
It blows my mind how you keep coming up with more cabin ideas to build. The underground bunker was a kicker for me. It's too bad you don't have an old and established hardwood tree with reaching branches going out in a circle around the trunk of the tree because I would love to see you're treehouse concept for real, maybe that's an idea to think about for a future build?
Thanks Kevin,
You and Don always keep me interested in the projects you build.
Keep Safe and Always Inspired,
Matt - Toronto
Cant wait till next video.
Awesome as always
Keep up the great work buddy 👍, that looks amazing. Do a bedroom above your head. I've watched pretty much everything that you and Don has created. And it's really amazing. I love your channel. Oh and I bet that you're wife helped.she should be in more of your videos. Maybe she could change alot of women's lives by inspiring them to do things like this. Not to many women like to do things like that, so maybe you can become famous by showing them how it's done. Keep up the great work 👍.
you should build an actual big mini castle room by room :)
very cool, stars would be lovely.
Awesome build!
Really cool idea for that. I see that everyday at qork never thought about what you did lol. I'm going take some home build my kids rocket houses lol.
Good job. I like it.
Shark has been jumped! But you didnt hit the chicken stand! Hey to Don.
Top job team 👏 FULLSTOP 🍻👍
thats pretty cool,lot of work
How about a spiral ladder leading to a semi circular platform. Of course made from repurposed lumber.
maybe one of those mirror balls hanging from the top if it turned it would create your stars.
If you scorch the wood, it won't rot. In Japan, they've found scorched wood structures built over 100 years ago still in perfect condition.
Nice build !
Put cinterstones or something under the bottom plate mayby 8 -10 of them to avoid boving ,rain water that get under the cable spool bottom may make it rot . Drying up will be very slow without air gap.
I would use insulation mats instead of spray foam if I was going to insulate it.
If you are going to use drywall on the roof/ walls you can wet it an shape it in a jig to make the radius shape right.
If you use partical board/ masonit wet it slightly before mounting it ,it will shrink when in place and then you will get a smooth surface without hills in it afterwards.
Masonite moves a bit when it
Varies in moisture content over the seasons joints are hard to plaster over ,the plaster cracks . Use a hand plane and Shamfer booth sides of the pieces 45 degree mayby half the thicknes.
Also when using sawn pine as shingle material I would rekomend to tar the roof with
Pine tar, there are often some sap wood in the shingle and it rot fast. sawn shingle also absorbs water much more easy due to the end grain being exposed on the surface of the shingle, on a higher degree than split shingles. When the sawing industry emerged the making of shingle for bell towers and churches and sutch was much easier to make , earlier they were split and shaped with axes.
The thing was that the shingle lasted less time than the old ones , so the tar treatment s
Is more necessary on them
Than the old ones .
Often the old roofs were tarred also tho.
You can put pigments in the tar ,use natural pigment iron oxide gets you red brown block colour depending on temperature in pigment roasting.
If yo use lexan or plastic glass you can make the windows
With the same bow like the walls cut out the window parts bottom/ top out of a bowed
Log ,the log laying on its side
On the saw. Use a
Router to make glass reseses in the glass frame. Actually you could do a window with
A cut slit in the middle for the glass then you dont need to use glassing put or glass trim wood to lock it in place .
It rekomended to put put in the slit doe ,atleast in the bottom part .
Nice build doe
Great video
The roof absolutely needs a half loft sleeping area like others have suggested. I also like their ideas for a circular staircase. I'd go one bigger and see if you could add a small deck at the front door big enough for a chair anf small table.
The cone top reminds me of the tin man from the wizard of oz and the shake reminds me if the cowardly lion and the scarecrow...in a good way. So, i think i have a theme for that building that might just be better than space that just needs some blue gingham drapes and few ruby red accent pieces. And while that may not be the most manly of decor choices, i think your wife and daughter would love it! 😂 can't wait to see what you do with it!
Stain it pink for your daughter’s castle..😀
Random thought forestry mulcher!! In addition to all your dope cabins/workspaces. You can have an abundance of mulch and you can continue clearing out your dead standing. Thanks for you're videos. You're carpentry skilled are under rated.#palletwoodking
Chippers are expensive... But I wouldn't say no if someone was offering ;-)
Great stuff ❤🎉
