    I found this interesting as I trained with my guide dog Uma in 2009. I had the info visit. Then in the next visit they asked about mobility and looked at the routes I used and asked meabout my level of vision, what I could snd couldn't see.then my third assessment the did the walk with the harness and filmed me walking with my cane and asked what sort of things I did in my daily routine snd what sort of dog I wanted. I then went on the list and I already had good cane skills so just practiced routes whilst I was waiting. I waited a year for my first match z black lab x GR called Curtis but he was too scared of everything and he walked to slow. Then 4 months later they brought Una out to me who is very out going and aparantly she needed a calm owner to chill her out s bit! She's s very sweet gentle dog snd a little bit too clever. She is 7 and 1/2 now time has gone too wuick

    Thanks so much for this video and all the others I have watched. Being pretty new to sight loss it really helps to find I'm not so alone. I have applied for a guide dog and feel the future is all the brighter for it. Thanks again.

    Just captioned this one for you Emily. :) Even though I'm not a guide dog user myself, it's fascinating to hear about the process. My mate in the Channel Islands has just started his application for one, they're visiting his home next month for an initial chat. So this has given me a good idea of what it might be like for him. :)

      Blind In Society I applied once, did everything apart from the 3 or 4 week training, I only just failed, I really tried and I still failed, not independant enough they said, I was thinking back then well I thought that was the whole idea of a guide dog to give us more independance. After that taster I eventually had a letter saying no.

    This was so helpful Emily!! I am currently in the process of training with a cane and i feel quite consious about it but it's going really well and i know it will be worth it in the end :) My mobility officer and I are both hoping that i can be matched with a dog by the time i go to uni (if i do go) which would be amazing. But i understand that it does take some time. I learned a lot more about the process by watching this video so thankyou for giving such helpful information :) And also congratulations on graduating! I am so happy for you :) xx

    Excellent vid Emily. I have been searching for something like this. didn't find it before I started the process sadly, but it is v informative and accurate. I'm just waiting to do the dreaded harness walk and will then hopefully be on the waiting list, which is currently around 11 months. thanks so much

    Mum has decided to give me qnother chance. This time it won’t be as rushed. Last time it was really rushed which didn’t help. I want this independance. I will do it because on days I don’t have carers including weekends I want to be able to get out and about. So if say carers are ill then I can still get out and about for another example I could learn the bus route to the riding stables I ride at. Then hopefully try again applying for a guide dog.

    Thanks for your video! I'm working on getting my first guide dog right now and so far it's not going well. Fidelco rejected me. I'm trying Freedom right now. The hard part is that with Fidelco there is a committee who approves candidates and they didn't give me a reason as to why I was not accepted. Fingers crossed for Freedom!

    • @danielledewitt1
      @danielledewitt1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rachel Seff They always give a reason, with me first time it was I was moving soon well fair enough that would have been unsettling for the dog, second reason was I wasn’t independant enough well that one hmm I thought that was the idea of a guide dog. To give more independance.

  • @danielledewitt1
    @danielledewitt1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even if you are trained to use a long cane they still make you go through the process up to doing a further assessment where tou look after a dog in a hotel then write you a letter saying no you can’t have a guide dog not independant enough. I thought that was the general idea, to give us more independance.

    My false eye fell out yesterday at bingo revealing an empty socket as I had the real one removed due to it being ulcerated and useless. Fallen out loads of times before and last year they said if it keeps falling out we’ll make another. If it doesn’t fall out it turns itself around so it’s the wrong way.

    With food for the dog can you get different flavours?

  • @danielledewitt1
    @danielledewitt1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder which dog I’ll get in the 24 hour taster session. Last time I had Greta who yes was lovely but heck she jumped up like mad. I never forget the first night feeding her she jumped up and I didn’t see her coming and next thing her food and bowl hit the door then it was all over the floor, next thing a knock on the door are you ok Danielle, I let him in and said I’m fine but can’t speak for Greta’s dinner. He helped me out there and that’s when I said I thought these guide dogs were trained not to jump at us, he said yes we are working on that habit.

    Hi, I am from the UK and registered blind, but I still have a lot of my sight & thought I wanted and needed a guide dog, but I think I changed my mind as I don't go out much, so I don't think it would be fare on the dog not going out much! I have a week to decide as, I have had people out from thr Guide dogs. What it your comment please? Thanks pet .

    I'm just at the start of getting a guide dog I've had the first person come out and the mobility trainer has just been out this week i do not use a long cane i refused to when i was a teenager they tried to teach me but i hated it so gave up very quickly the mobility instructor said this would not be a problem at all.
    when i went out with the mobility instructor we must have looked like a right site i am a 20 something girl who was telling a 6 foot bloke that he was a good boy

      Sam Attwell When I was applying and did the harness walk and I was praising the chap holding it and saying the different things and at one point a woman looked at me and said ok that is a human not a dog you weirdo you are crazy then we stopped for a minute while the chap explained what was going on then she was fine and said oh right I didn’t realise.

    Thank you for you very helpful and informative video. I was born with nystagmus and have recently moved out into my own place, I am considering applying for a guide dog as I think it could be helpful - especially with these dark evenings! One question for you though; I have a secondary disability which results in me walking with a crutch, do you think this is something that could be worked around or would it likely be too much of a hindrance?

    • @fashioneyesta
      @fashioneyesta  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your welcome :) You should totally do it, even if you apply and find out more information about how it works. No I shouldn't think so, guide dogs work with people who have additional disabilities like people who are amputees, people with epilepsy, people in wheelchairs and so on. Guide dogs are always a charity who want to try and make it work for people, they may suggest giving you a dog to match your walking speed. So I'd just make some enquirers, speak to your local district team and see what they say x

    When I did the assessment in the hotel I didn’t realise Greta the dog I was given was a guide dog, I thought she was in training to be one. Tell you what though she loved to jump up. I was feeding her getting her to sit, out of the blue I didn’t see it coming she jumped up, as a result she knocked the food and bowl clean out of my hand the food and bowl hit the door, The officer knocked on the door and said is everything ok because it sounds to me like Greta jumped up on you. So I let him in and said I thought guide dogs were trained to not jump up. They were working on that with her, he helped me pick the dry food up and then said right lets try again. I got her to sit again. Then told her to wait which this time she did then gave her the signal once the food was down etc that she could eat.

    What is the access and UK like. In America people are starting to have issues with the fake guide dog. And they're starting to ask real guy dog owners to leave their stores. Do you have this issue and UK as well.? If it is ever happened how would you deal with it or you taught that when you're training for the guy dog.

    • @danielledewitt1
      @danielledewitt1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holly Ridgley There are access denials here too. It’s illegal to deny access to a guide dog owner with a guide dog.

    Wait… they seriously want 50 *pence* for fully training a guide dog? That's something like 100,000 times less than the cost. Why do they even ask for a payment of what's basically pocket change?

    • @fashioneyesta
      @fashioneyesta  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its basically what they ask you to pay when you sign a form to qualify for your guide dog and certify that you are the dogs legal owner. Guide dogs get most of their funding from the public which covers the training costs. Of course guide dogs do welcome you to give a bigger donation when you qualify with your guide dog. I donated £50 when I first qualified with Unity, my parents also donated some money too and then I did a lot of volunteer work with them too.

      Fashioneyesta You’ve got a bit more sight than me. I’ve got 2 meters blurred tunnel vision in my left eye always been completely blind in my right eye which now is plastic. Also got the nystagmus. Takes me ages to focus on things. My consultants at the eye hospital thankfully most of them are patient and say take your time. They have been trying to teach me how to get it to go back where it should be when it goes wandering off but I just can’t seem to get control over.

    Then after 6 weeks of training guide dogs uk stab you in the back. Get rid of your pet dog and you can have a guide dog. Buddy and Cliff got on great. Blackmailing clients, that is no way to act.
