    Excellent video, thank you . I own a frustrating Technics SH-GE70 equalizer . Fundamentally it works great! However visually ? the left and right digital display is completely out , as the indicator lights...no lights at all. I will check for looseness or cracks as your video demonstrated.If you can shed any light on this issue, i would greatly appreciate it ..thnx again.

      Hi Chris, thanks. It sounds very much like there is no power getting to the front PCB. All you can do is a close visual inspection, preferably with a magnifier and very gently press on the displays to see if there are any cracked solder joints as there were on mine. Good luck.

    Ya know them red plastic display covers mines like bowing out in the middle can I take it off from the outside without opening it up and re glue it back
    Thanks

      I'm fairly certain that to get at the display covers you will have to remove the front panel PCB from the inside.

    Thanks for posting this. I had the same problem with the resistor feeding the 5V regulator. It has overheated the same as yours

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found it useful. I don't know why they designed the 5V circuit the way they did, it's fairly crude. However, i've been using mine regularly since i repaired it and it's been working fine.

    • @whitefields5595
      @whitefields5595 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to put a much lower value resistor in to get a 5V output. I used a resistance box and finally settled on 420 Ohms. I may well change the regulator one day or, as you imply, a modern variant of the whole 5V supply. Anyway thanks for taking the trouble to post as I was sitting on this repair and your video came through just at the right time!

    The PCB looks the same with that of a sh-d5000 graphic equalizer that I have. What zener diodes did you use. Mine keeps on fraying them.

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      The only component that I changed was the input resistor on the 5V regulator, the zener diode was fine.

    37 volts? Is that right? I've replaced my caps, still nothing, reflowed joins to the regs, still nothing. Faint display, eq light flashes once then goes out. I checked voltages and got 38 volts, i thought that was high? Maybe it's that resistor? I was about the throw it out, is there any equivalents to the 3 regs on the power supply?
    Thanks mate

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been 6 years since I worked on this but as far as I can remember, yes, the AC voltage from the transformer was 37 volts. The resistor on the 5 volt regulator seems to be a common problem. I'm not sure what the power transistors were as I didn't need to replace them. The regulator was a 7805 I think, these are fairly common.

      @@RetroSteamTech Thanks for your reply, I've reflowed all the joints on the display board and checked every solder joint for any cracks and im still getting the same results, which capacitor would be the culprit? @@RetroSteamTech I did purchase a second Ke-7090 because some of the pads were damaged, well when I desoldered the new caps off the damaged board and swapped the old caps on the undamaged board I had a hard time getting the new caps off, and they did get very hot, could this be the issue? Could I have burnt out the caps? I mean it worked for a bit then it gradually started failing, or could it be a resistor or another component? Thanks for your help by the way, not many people take the time to respond 👍

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrSh4W Excessive heat will certainly damage capacitors. The service manual for the KE-7090 is available online, might be worth downloading it. It will contain schematics and PCB layouts. You would be able to replace the capacitors with new ones rather than ones taken from another board.

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I'm not an expert on vfd displays but given their age I would suspect capacitors in the power supply circuit. Bad capacitors are quite often the root cause of problems with old electronic circuitry.
