I take it there was some contempt for the post-colonial Greeks to those Paul was addressing? Or, was it just the usual attack on the intelligentsia, eg. "blessed are the poor in spirit?"
p58 of your Early Xty in Alex. Jews who had the means (Apollos "probably affluent" p49) and intelligence to leave would probably leave. Your own refs to Philo's list of Gentile punishments would encourage Jews to leave. My main concern was: would Apollos have had time to become a reasonably informed "Christian" by around 36, 37?
I get the impression that Paul was good a starting churches, not so good at "keeping" them. If he was the only one saying the Parousia was imminent then I could imagine people becoming disillusioned with him. Alternatively I could imagine that his churches felt they weren't differentiated enough. Or were convinced that disciples who actually knew Jesus must have more insight than Paul.
Now I have to do a deep dive in Philo. THANK YOU!
Remarkable. I appreciate this so much - been fascinated by this question since I became aware of Apollos.
appreciated
More gold.

Hi Dr David L, perhaps Apollos left Alexandria around 36,37, when the situation was worsening for Jews in the city?
Nice hypothesis. Can you bring in some evidence?

and so.. apollos efforts and success in converting gentile pagans to the jesus movement then have all been attributed to paul
