You basically created a “foraging box” which is something parrot owners commonly use as a source of enrichment! Generally they’re filled with shredded paper in addition to food so the seeds don’t just all fall out as soon as a hole is opened.
Also the reason your blueberry paint got so thick is that blueberry skins contain a lot of pectin, which is the component in jellies and jams that makes them firm instead of juicy.
I say it’s because of starch gelatinization and temperature loss. Probably not enough pectin to thicken the whole pot.

@@bobbywhite5319 If you make blueberry jelly or pie you don't have to add sugar because of all the pectin in the berries. In fact blueberries get sweeter when baked. Blueberries gel all by themselves when heated.
The blueberry paint also went gray because the ph was too high
- Adding something alkaline like baking soda makes it more blue/gray
- Adding something acidic like vinegar makes it more red
@@bobbywhite5319 it's mostly due to the pectin though, we see the reaction happen immediately after he adds the blueberry skins (where the highest concentration of pectin for the fruit).
Cockatoos are incredibly smart. Family had a pet cockatoo when I was a kid. We were going out of town so we took him to a local bird keeper, but warned them that he needed a real (keyed or combo) lock on his cage...
Got a frantic call from the keeper that our bird had gotten free in their shop. When pressed they admitted to using a clip to lock the cage. Once free, he let all of their other birds out of their cages, too.
And everybody started clapping

@@GuyNamedSean it’s definitely possible! My late dog was a border collie lab mix and she used to literally open a latch in her crate with her tongue!! Animals are incredibly smart sometimes.

Secure a block of wood on the balcony and let the cockatoos go ham on it and hang the finished "carvings" on tree as an ornament
Good idea! Sort of like using a Cockatoo as a laser cutter.

@@MakersMuse That's why people get scratching-posts for their cats, to ameliorate the need to scratch the furniture. Then again, just like how pets and kids play with the box rather than the expensive toy, scratching-posts don't work, so the block might not save the railing. 🤷
@@MakersMuse a lot of parrot owners provide “destructibles” for their birds - toys that are designed to be destroyed. balsa wood, paper, cardboard, rope, all sorts as long as the materials are safe for them!
@@lexthequeer I'm not sure about the safety of the ink, but back when phone books were more frequently about, they would hang one in each cage for their African Greys. They wouldn't last the full year before being totally destroyed, but folks in the community were happy to donate their previous year books.
This was an absolutely joy to watch. I couldn't stop smiling. The gifts looked adorable and I think the mistakes or inaccuracies in the stamping is exactly what makes them look so good.

I came here to write this; I'm so glad more people feel the same way.
I thought I would see birds having fun, but it was so much more. I never knew flattened boxes/ cubes are called nets. My whole life I've looked for that word when trying to describe a learning disability that I have. I can't look at a simple net and know what it will look like when assembled, unless I assemble it.

We adopted my Angel in the 80’s, and she is a real attention hog! She loves to cuddle and love! She’s always been a little raggedy, but she looks and acts just like these birds!
i love how there is a huge list of toxic things for birds with so many things we eat regularly meanwhile the cockatoos are probably outside eating the garbage out of the bin they opened themselves
I was thinking the same thing--so much of this toxic garbage is in their environment and they root through it constantly for food. They're probably evolving resistances to it at this point
Agreed, I think the only difference is accountability. Did they get sick because of you or something outside your control? Can only do the best you can in your hula hoop (as they say). It’s what I tell myself so I don’t give up lol.

Birds aren't stupid, many understand the foods they should not eat. For example, apples are fine, but the skin of apples is toxic to them. Because of this, they still eat apples but they will throw away the skin
"is human blood safe for birds to eat" gets you on a lot of watch-lists
They're like feathered little velociraptors with a sassy attitude.

Yes, and even the glue! (By the way, if one ever needs bird safe wood glue, skin glue should be safe, surely not vegan friendly, but it's just cooked up animal skin, soooo. I glue up bird houses and feeders with it.)

As a fellow bird lover myself and 'owner' of an African Grey called Parsley, I love the time you took to do this for the Sulphies. You have inspired me to make similar projects for Parsley to enjoy opening. I didn't even know such templates were available. I'm no where near as creative as you, but i'll give it my best shot. Love seeing these birds! I used to have a pet parrot. I was his second owner and he lived to 68. Watching him just be a parrot learning his personality and intelligence floored me. No way would I keep another parrot in a cage. They are way to social and smart to be kept locked up no matter how large the cage is.
There are pretty easy ways to wrap boxes in paper without having to use adhesive. You need a bit more paper but it works well, it's nice to use on presents for humans too.

Agree . Made my own paper, lining paper roll and printed it for humans but this is a whole new level of thought .
Creating complex NETs is literally my job (although, we call them dielines). I love the application!
I remember how fascinated my mom (a retired chemistry teacher) was when she learned one of her former students was designing boxes and packaging and such like this (probably 10+ years ago). I guess it was relatively new(-er) (perhaps?) at the time. It's such cool stuff!! I always have appreciated the sustainability aspect(s), where they apply. Good on you! :)
What do you use them for? What classes did you take to learn how to make NETs?
@@pendlera2959 Not sure what country you live in so you might have to search for related fields. I graduated with a degree in Packaging Science and that had all the necessary coursework. Most schools don’t offer a direct path for this so you might have to dig deep into the course catalog. If you’re in the US or looking to study here, I can give you some suggestions.
If you’re in another area, you might be able to find related courses at schools offering Industrial Engineering or Industrial Design. At my school, Architecture students and Graphic Design students would often take do cross studies in packaging design. You might also find classes at schools offering Food Science. Look for emphasis areas in packaging technology or packaging design.
As for what to use them for, I make packaging and displays for retail. You’ll find examples of my work at stores like Walmart, Costco, Target, and all sorts of smaller retailers.
The term 'net' is a more abstract term used in geometry where they ask questions like "How many different nets does a cube have?" because there are several different ways you could fold up a flat surface into a cube.
@@3DBearnicornThat is really cool. I studied advertising and design as part of my art degree. I pay attention to all those displays and how they are designed and put together. Maybe that is part of my ADhD brain as well, that none of the advertising is ever in the background for me.
I don't know how I'd go about living without Australian birds. They're always a highlight to my day! We get a lot of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos around where I live and they're always so noisy in the afternoon so I never feel alone.
it depends on were you live. most places have beautiful, intelligent, lovely sounding birbs
Both yes and no. I live in Denmark, and we do not have such creatures here. Most intelligent birds here, are crows and ravens. However we do not have any lethal reptiles or insect's. We have around 5 to 10 poisones plants, were the most poisones are lethal. It is the one with the bella donna berry. 3 berries and it will kill an adult. We have two snakes in total, one without fangs and then a viper type, that are no more deadly than bee stings for an adult yet can be deadly in rare cases for a child. So as much as I envy Australia, then I am happy that 99 percent of everything in our nature is safe to eat.
@@brostenen I have a similar situation in the norther usa. while we do have wolves and bears, they are nothing that a good punch in the snoot won't scare off, and the most poisonous thing here are bees and poison ivy
@@marvalice3455 It must be the climate. It is so strange how fruits and berries are different from continent to continent. Like blueberries. The Danish ones are tiny and the plant is aprox some 5 inches tall. However the plants that we buy, that are named American blueberries, are a tall plant and big berries. We do have wolfes, however they are newly migrated from Germany. Else we have not had any the last 200 to 300 years. We have around 10 wolfes in all of Denmark.
@@brostenen if I had to speculate, it is probably that areas with less diverse life don't need to compete as hard. like, I live in northern minnesota (pretty similar to norway climate wise). there is a lot of life here, but it is not super diverse compared to more temperate areas, and it has nothing on the tropics. I think that the higher the diversity, the more plants and animals need to stand out from each other, and the more defined their niche needs to be.
not an expert though, that's just my best guess.
the "american" blueberries are probably hybrids. a lot of fruits over here ate close enough to european fruits to make hybrids with cool properties. like, most store bought strawberries are a hybrid between the tiny but delicious Virginia strawberry, and one of the bigger european ones.
That was a fun video. As a bird person (there are three feathered brats in my home) I always love seeing someone coming up with creative ideas to keep them entertained. If I had parrots living near me I would constantly be outside interacting with them. They may be destructive but they sure are amazing creatures.

4:55 Anthocyanins are responsible for the color of many plants and their fruit, such as blueberries. Betalains are functionally similar chemicals found in other plants, such as betanin in beets. The colors of both classes of chemicals are varyingly dependent on pH. Merely diluting or concentrating can put the pH closer or further from neutral.
Bicarb will probably make it more blue.

Its how they eat their native foods, by destruction. Its cute to watch though. Parrot owners make or buy toys specifically to be destroyed. Its just so natural. 😂 A pet parrot that wont destroy a toy is a red flag and needs help and training.

This is fabulous! I loved how the cockatoos were totally ready to shred your gifts! As a parrot parent myself, we always have destructible toys around. They are clever little chickens and enjoy shredding/destroying a bunch of things. You need to see what they do with a roll of paper towels! :D

FYI food coloring + alcohol is how we usually color bird stuff. But beet juice is a great idea!

I needed to know about the net book. I found out about nets as a kid and loved them (sometimes I created them for papercraft).
I always love to watch the cockatoo videos, but I always have a huge cry after and during. My hubby's sweet Sulphur-Crested Cockie Bill just passed last year after being with him for 43 YEARS! He had him longer than he knew me! We believe he was about 60 years old, and did indeed come from Australia before they banned exporting them to the USA. It just infuriates me that they are often shot as "pests" in their homeland when they could be brought to the USA for loving homes. I see his empty house (which we don't have the heart to remove from our living room). Our other birds look for him and we all miss him terribly. Here come the tears again. He literally passed in John's arms. How amazing to have them visit you every day! I cannot even imagine. They are very special and peeps who live in Aussieland are so fortunate! Our home will never be the same.
Sorry for your loss. If your dear bird lived with you for 43 years then it was clear he was cared for and loved, especially considering how many people have a tough time caring for cockatoos. Losing any pet is awful but there is something different about losing a bird that has been with you for decades.

it is so delightful to witness someone who knows more about crafting and assembling than I ever will struggle with something I know quite a lot about (natural/pet safe pigments). just goes to show how varied and beautiful this world is!
as someone who makes a living selling at craft fairs....I've seen a lot of much worse packaging then those little boxes. NIce work.
this was wonderfully wholesome, and i loved watching some people go to great length to be kind to animals on the morning i had to send my cat to the vet and she was terrified. :(

I absolutely love your videos! I hope this information might help, but there is a way to wrap presents without tape. It’s a Japanese, origami-esque method which once you get it down is pretty easy. If you ever do little gifts again in the future (which I hope you do, they’re adorable), maybe this might work?

It's always a bit of a risk when a content creator makes a video on a topic different from what the channel usually covers but this one was really great. You really knocked it out of the park and the birds look to have had as much of a good time as you did, minus the bullies.

Paper twine can also work, and yes, you could have grated yourself some other veggies for nice coloration and even gotten pea flower flowers to make blue dye out of!
Chlorophyll is good as green dye since it’s in every plant ever!
Beetroot is already you red or rather pink, so together you can mix them with turmeric to make an entire color palate of bird friendly veggie dyes!

I’m quite tired of people saying in December that that year sucked and they are looking forward to next year.
2021 was a good solid year. We developed a vaccine in record time and slowed down a deadly pandemic. We managed to enjoy a somewhat normal summer season with holiday and traveling. Human ingenuity found new ways to overcome challenges. Tools like TH-cam was able to bring us together and keep us close even though we are on different corners of earth. Good job 2021!

Origami wraps, its how i wrap any squared or rectangular things, you fold in a flap to tuck the last bit in, no glue required at all, and its pretty easy to learn the techniques.
