In conversation with Thomas Siriotis owner of O Foros Taverna, in the once abandoned (now partially restored) village of Old Perithia, Corfu.
In this video Thomas shares his memories of growing up and living in Loutses and Old Perithia (Palio Perithia).
Old Perithia lies in the foothills of Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest peak which towers over the north east of the island. You will pass through the village of Loutses on the way to Old Perithia.
When you drive up the mountain from the north-east coast road, once past the village of Loutses, the scenery changes dramatically from lush green landscape with swathes of olive groves punctuated by tall imposing Cypress trees, to a grey barren rocky, almost lunar landscape.
As you enter the village of Old Perithia you step back in time at least 60 years. It is 60 years ago that villagers started relocating nearer the coast during the early days of what was to become Corfu mass tourism.
As you explore the mix of tumbledown, restored and partially restored stone buildings, you are literally walking in the footsteps of those residents of old.
In Old Perithia village square you will find a small selection of tavernas, including O Foros, all serving a delicious selection of traditional Corfiot cuisine.
For a glimpse into Corfu’s village past, a trip to Old Perithia is a worthy addition to your holiday itinerary.
