  • This is part 2 or 2 on making a cloth covered #slipcase. It is based on a technique I was taught by June McNicol, and June based it primarily on the instructions by Arthur Johnson in the Thames and Hudson Manual of Bookbinding.

    Following your instuctions I was able to do my first slip case: thank you so much! I read on Facebook that you suffered great damages from the last storm in Brisbane! I hope things are going better now. Here in France where I live we are quite worried about the actual war in Ucraine. All my best whishes and lots of thanks! I should also add that your bookbinding videos are a real delight to watch - so practical and knowledgable and so nicely produced with a very relaxing ambience. I am entirely new to bookbinding and planning getting started by making some slip cases for my books. I shall enjoy rewatching a few times your excellent set of slipcase-making videos before I start to have a go at making my own first slipcase. Can’t thank you enough for taking the time and care in producing these videos and your generosity in sharing your considerable experience and knowledge of the wonderful craft of bookbinding. Best wishes and take care!

    I have a great client and produced some books for him. I had printed end papers of the book printed and had the same paper on the inside of the slipcases to match. The binding quality was superb and I now have similar project but the binders ended business last year. Trying to find one here in the UK that does a reasonable qty is hard as most seem to be very 'hands on'.

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, there have been many great commercial binders in the UK closed over the last 20 years. Not sure who is left. That middle ground between cheap machine made and individual hand made is a tough market. Good luck. btw, I think what is starting to fill this void is small publishers doing their own printing and binding. This way there is only one profit margin for the full production.

    Would love to see a box set slip case! I realize it’s generally the same principle but especially with heavy books I feel like you might need some reinforcement. Also maybe holes in the back or something to make it easier to remove middle books.

      Hadn't planned on it, but will put it on the way in the future list. Using double walls makes the board much stiffer and corners much stronger. The boards are staggered in the corners rather than just butted up against each other. I sort of do double walls using the manilla card. DAS

    Hi. I LOVE your videos! They are the best tutorials on TH-cam. Thenk you for being so generous with so much information that is not easy to find. May I ask if this glue is PVA? And the blue cloth you are using, looks very thin. Is there a name for it? Or a place where I can buy it? I am really new to this craft and I do absorb as much info I can find before actually spending money. Thank you !

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, generically it is PVA. Most likely it is specifically Evacon EVA. The covering material is Arbelave buckram. Arbelave is thick by book cloth standards. But it is one of my favourite bookcloths. Check out my recommended supplier list in the comments. Happy binding!

    Have recently finished my first paired hardcover book and slip case. Some painful lessons learned about the choice of bookcloth, for sure. I opted for a commercial rayon bookcloth with the appearance of slubbed dupion silk. While the case was still a little damp I wrapped the finished book in silicone paper and allowed the case to 'dry to fit'. What I didn't bank on was friction between the slubs on the book case and turn ins on the slip case. Managed to rectify that somewhat by squeezing in a sheet of 1mm greyboard to create a slightly looser fit without the book falling out of its own accord.

    This was my first project, and I've now made three of them. They've turned out okay, though I've definitely learned some things along the way. My initial approach to cutting the pieces out of the binder's board was hugely wasteful -- both of the first two boxes took essentially an entire sheet of board and wasted about 60% of it. I've since figured out how to get two cases out of one board with considerably less waste.
    I've learned to use mix instead of PVA for gluing down the head and tail. Having that little bit of extra working time makes it much easier. Also, since I'm making these all the same size and I don't own a pair of dividers, I made a jig out of some cast-off board that lets me quickly mark the middle of the head and tail and find the correct spot for the two 45 degree cuts.
    Any tips on covering the front corners when the slipcase doesn't have a curved front? Mine are flat. I've been cutting the final cover pieces a little wider so they extend up over the 2.5 mm of the head/tail board before narrowing to fit inside the box.

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Square fronted slip cases are sooo much easier. Make a little diagonal cut for the edge of the board, and narrower for inside the box - as you mention. It's the same technique used in some of my other box videos. But I might make a new video on this once I get up and going again. DAS

    Great video. I watched it because I am repairing a cookbook with a spine that split because of too many supplemental recipes being placed between the pages. Can the slipcase be adapted to include a box on the side to hold all the extra pages? If so, how would you build and cover the combined slipcase-and-box?

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just make the box the same height and depth as the book and make the slip case wide enough for both? DAS

    • @amkarei
      @amkarei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like DAS's response to your query. That way all those "Love Letters" can be contained together. And, if you've not already removed them from their honored places WITHIN the book, I'd leave them in place. More than likely those "treasures" were adaptations, or "this worked better", or "Ooo, and try this one!" kind of gems. Hope your project went well!

  • @burner37
    @burner37 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video is really amazing.
    How would you handle the covering of the top and bottom parts in the case of a larger slipcase (e.g. Multiple volumes book)? Do you just keep longer excess of paper to be sure that there is enough to fold over the whole surface?

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  ปีที่แล้ว

      I once made a multi-book slip case (with dividers between each book - pain in the neck to make!) and I filled-in inside the turn-ins top and bottom. Filling-in is cutting a piece that neatly fills in a space. Then I put another piece over the top and bottom as in the video. Good luck!

    Since you're moving on to some projects involving leather in the future do you plan on making a tutorial on flexible leather cover? I think it's made with thin leather over thick leather, but I think it would be a good one to be made since there are few (to none) of the kind on the interwebs

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry, but I don't have a lot experience with semi-limp leather covers. I'd really like to know what type of book you are hoping to bind with this? Leather over card (such as manila card weight) to form a semi-limp cover is common on small bibles and music. I have bound music this way and repaired a fair few bibles with this style of cover. The bibles usually have a yapp edge too. I'm not sure about leather over leather. I'll have to research that. I'll put it on my maybe list, but can't promise anything, sorry.

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mix is a 50/50 mix of paste (or methyl cellulose) and PVA. It gives some of the benefits of both adhesives. Good luck! DAS

    • @craigjohnston9063
      @craigjohnston9063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using "mix" for all the adhesive work here or just for the top and bottom strips? I'm having "mixed" results with my efforts and wonder if you're using straight PVA for the majority of the adhesive work here. Thanks for all your videos, they are beautifully done and quite calming!

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, no. I thought it was fairly straight forward. Just cut the head and tail boards flush with the sides and turn-in the cloth without making all those annoying little cuts. There is a different covering style I've been meaning to document. Maybe I can do it without the rounded head and tail.

    • @ncapitan1
      @ncapitan1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DASBookbinding Thank you for your response. That’s what I did but the problem is the head and tail covers are meant to be 1mm less wide than the width of the box. So not wide enough to cover the angles when coming back inside the box. I guess I will have to cut the head and tail covers flush to the edges of the box then. I wish I could show you a picture of what I mean…
