  • They dropped the ball on this one. This is one of the only rifles I have ever bought and was instantly disappointed in it. I had high hopes for S&W given their other products and I don’t feel like they released something that was ready yet. In this video you will see a few failures, cons, and frustrations when it comes to the all new model 1854 lever action by S&W chambered in 44 magnum.

    There are 2 extra torx screws included with the rifle, that are used for the hole to tighten the rail when you remove the rear peep sight. Check your manual pouch, they are with the offset hammer spur extension screw, and instructions are on page 42 of the manual

    Before this … have you ever even held a lever gun of any kind ? To include the Daisy Red Ryder.

    Umm...a lot of the negative things you point out here are inherent to lever guns in general (floppy trigger for example is a Marlin thing) or just personal preference (how the safety functions and the mag tube for example). The 1854 is an amalgam of Marlin and Henry actions and so has features/shortcomings of both. That being said, some of your findings (screws for example) are obviously sub-par QC but are also easily fixable, not that the end user should have to do rhat...they shouldn't. I just think you're not very familiar with lever guns and so the whole ecosystem is being examined without a lot of background. Im in AZ and for a fair price, I'd take it off your hands.

    If only the lever action repeating rifle was an older design that was off patent, then maybe S&W could have just copied some other guns that work exceptionally well...

    This guy needs a NERF gun, sounds like a spoiled child at Christmas. Some people want to say they were the first to bring down a company so said company will feel forced to give them new guns even though there was never anything wrong in the first place.

    I would never buy a brand design of almost anything. Give a year or two for them to find out what isn’t quite right and fix it.

    Sorry to see you having issues out of the box, that’s never a good feeling I just took delivery of my own number 338 off the line and the first thing I did was disassemble it clean, oil and make sure everything was tight and in place. I agree the trigger is weird, the rail is too short and it seemed clunky with the action. I do have to say that just with a few rounds through it it totally transformed into a different rifle smooth as butter excellent shooting and honestly the sights were amazing and easy to pick up, give her another chance and see if you can have smith go over the gun and correct any concerns you have it really is imo a great rifle

    If you are buying a lever gun, don't buy a S&W. Just as you wouldn't buy a 60 thousand dollar Kia expecting it to be a true luxury car either!

    I really appreciate the honest review. I actually just picked one up today and I noticed the trigger wiggle. I haven’t shot it yet, but I’m definitely going to check the tightness on all of the screws before taking it to the range. I hope I have a completely different experience than you… but I’m not optimistic. I’ll let you know how it goes.😎

      the model I saw looked like a used gun at my local gun dealer all scratched and the side gate (where the ammo was loaded) looked like it had shot about 50 times all scratched up and the blueing was almost gone I wasn't impressed. I'm not knocking the company but If I'm paying 1000 bucks for one I want it to look new.

    I have one. Im not a boomer and I think you have some valid points.
    They are rushing these things out of the factory but there arent any serious flaws with them or safety issues, just final assembly.
    Personally i read the manual and go through and disassemble the gun to make sure theres no burrs and reclean/oil before i fire it. Factory grease sucks.
    My threaded barrel had plastic wrap in the threads.
    There are screws that are pre-locktighted that come with it to secure the PIC RAIL if you remove the peep site.
    I wish they would have included a small drop in replacement to cover the hole ( gap) for the cutout.
    The trigger is a design thing, they all do it. Its annoying. Its a Marlin thing. The gun actually is compatible with Marlin 1894 rifle stocks, they are very similar.
    They have a 357 Mag they are making, they made the instruction book to even show it so they can use the same manual for it- so if you checked the manual you would have seen that :) and probably the extra screws lol.
    The gun is front heavy so its hard to do trick reloads with it.
    The action gets much smoother once you use it more
    The safety is a crossbolt trigger stop- Older lever guns dont have one but the only way to safely unload is to drop the hammer when the trigger is depressed, which could cause accidents and neg discharges. Ive seen it happen two times out hunting with friends/family with their Marlins.
    Only other thing im wondering is does your bolt ride across the hammer and leave marks across the ribbing? Im not sure if thats by design or QC

    After 25 shots mine was sent back to Smith & Wesson it just wouldn't feed properly. My gunsmith said he has sent 4 revolvers back to them in the last month, apparently they have become the new Boeing. I got my gun back quick and 30 shots so far and no problems

    • @lordhuck2689
      @lordhuck2689 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      You make some good points. All lever action guns should have vital components fall out of the gun after less than 50 rounds.

    • @pewpewdingers
      @pewpewdingers  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      My other lever actions don’t have a wobbling trigger, loose screws, irons sights on the rail, or an actions that physically gets stuck 3 out of 10 times. 🤷‍♂️ never claim to be an expert but this rifle doesn’t doesn’t need an expert to know it’s poor quality and ever since S&W went public they have dropped the ball on new firearms.

      The dude makes a good point. He’s complaint about the screw positioning means he did not look into the gun all that much. They’re placed that way to be interchangeable with the 1895. Also lube and loctite on a new gun isn’t unheard of.

    • @brandondavis4306
      @brandondavis4306 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fleetothemountains630 why the 1895 is 45-70 and this is 44 mag I think you mean the 1894 that is a .44 mag. The offering I saw of the 1854 at my local gunshop had my like nope she came from the factory all scratched up the side gate door looked like it had been shot alot the blueing had almost been worn off and for 1000 bucks easy pass went over to wally world and bought a henry 45-70 octagon barrel for less then 900.

  • @ChristianGrest
    @ChristianGrest หลายเดือนก่อน

    Safeties on lever guns are pretty dumb to be honest. All the newer rifles have them except for Henry. I wanted a chromed .44 magnum tactical style so went with a Henry All-Weather and sent it to MadPigCustom for a barrel chop/thread action slick up. then added some Ranger Point Precision goodies and now have one heck of a rifle. Cost way more, but it'll outshoot and outperform this one. Haver considered picking up one of these since they came out to compare on my channel, but glad I didn't...seems S&W QC is lacking. Take a look at my lever gun videos from last year if you get a chance. Pricewise...these should be sub $1k for sure. Hopefully S&W improves on these.

    The loose screws are of concern. Lever rifle crossbolt safeties work across the board that way. They have half cock that takes the pressure off. As far as the peep sight, many people pay for that aftermarket. Why would you want the scope further back when you have a hammer there?

    • @pewpewdingers
      @pewpewdingers  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Some scopes have very short eye relief, so they have to sit back. The trigger being so loose and wobbly was my biggest concern. None of my other “modern” lever actions have a safety that freely wiggles like that. I can see the peephole being a aftermarket part for guys only use iron sights, but why a pic rail? Anything you mount will block that.
