    I can't confirm if it was intentional, but my favorite part of that song is after the line "but Daniel was hot, he drew first and shot", Ringo hits the snare in a way that mimics a gunshot.

    Unjustly underrated song. Deceptively simple as many other great Beatles tunes. However at close hearing it is impossible not to notice the very, very careful song crafting. I loved it when it came out, and I still enjoy it now and then. Still fresh some fifty years later!

    • @mtp4430
      @mtp4430 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not deceptively simple, it is simple. However, some of the greatest tunes are the simplest ones. The Beatles were amazing songwriters and it's not how complicated a song is, it's all about writing a hook that sticks in the listeners head. The simpler the better.

    • @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306
      @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad it's simple. Because when I was a little boy and my mom would sit me in front if the "record player" all these Beatles songs were telling me a story and taking me somewhere even if I didn't understand the words. And now all these years later I enjoy it as much or even more. It takes me back to those days as a kid. Nothing else really does that. Making "simple" do that however is genius... or magic, or a bit of both.

    My favorite part of Paul's music is his constant desire to try new modes (and modals) when writing his songs. From Rocky Raccoon and Maxwell's Silver Hammer and on past Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Paul has never rested on one particular flavor, and never will.

      @Robert Miller I've read about it recently. Two business man had to share the only available room in a hotel once. Being Christians, they bounded because of it, one of them though it was a nice idea to spread the word through bibles in hotels, so they invested some money of their own in buying bibles for hotels, and later on other business man helped. The bibles are gifted to the hotels.

  • @verward

    I think you missed a big part of the picture here. This is not a just a quirky "faux" country song. It's an homage to Dylan and more specifically John Wesley Harding. Anyone who is familiar with Dylan's work recognizes that that was what Paul was trying to emulate with this song. The clever word plays and humorous way of telling a kind of tragic story, not to forget the harmonica intervals. It all screams Dylan or "John Wesley Harding", which came out the year before Rocky Raccoon was published.
    It is also known that Paul and Bob had a lot of respect for each other and each other's work.

    I understand they wrote something like 48 songs while in India. Not sure what went on over there but that is a heck of a lot of good material. In their relatively short time together it seems whatever they did was just in the cards for them to produce such epic music. And not just where they were but it being those exact 4 and of course the best producer ever. We are all so lucky everything went the way it did or we would have really been missing out and not even know it.

    In terms of your question about the British fascination with the American, western cowboy music, it's probably due to the Beatles. The Beatles' major inspiration were people such as Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins etc.. a lot George's lead stuff seems to be inspired by people like Chet Atkins. It seems as though The Beatles just took this western rock a little further, bringing it right back to the 19th century cowboy idea for this song. So Queen were likely inspired by The Beatles who were inspired by the above.

    • @eddymccabe5351

      Auditory Cheesecake I’m not sure the Beatles created interest in country music by UK bands, but I do think they made it OK to show such appreciation. Even on the “Help!” album, Ringo does a proper country song “Act Naturally”, first done by Buck Owens. I also think they (&, to be fair, Gerry & the Pacemakers) did the same for songs from the musicals ( Till There Was You, from “The Music Man”, & You’ll Never Walk Alone, from “Carousel”) - their willingness to show their influences so overtly and in defiance of the received wisdom within pop music generally was yet more evidence of their versatility & difference from the musical “crowd” of the day.

    It's hardly a fantastic Beatles song - its an odd little bit of filler that works because it is on a double album chock full of odd little bits of filler and came out in a year of odd albums full off odd songs - but seriously, how many of the great 1968 albums would you see Rocky Raccoon making the final playlist of? Would it have made the cut or a single disc "White Album"? None and No. hardly fantastic.
