Fantastic insight Rebecca! I didn't catch that Lan may have been expecting "the snoop". Those scenes felt like throw away scenes until you said that. Going to go watch again with that in mind. Also, I had not yet considered just how betrayed Egwene is going to feel by Rand. And she is the one he can't forget...? I am guessing there will be a confrontation between them, leading Egwene to look at the warder yard closer.
I have some ideas about how this episode was structured with plot beats to make a few predictions. Book spoilers ahead. I think concentrating on Alanna and her warders is giving her and Lan something to do to justify their screen time and build their characters. I think all of this concentrating on warders and their bond to their Aes Sedai has been partially about giving screen time to their bigger named actors, but it also will end up explaining a major plot development with Rand. Rand gets bonded by Alanna unwillingly, which is tantamount to an intimate violation of the worst kind. If they do not spend time informing the audience about this bond, how it works, that the bond can be "masked" and "released" and used for the intimate pleasure of the people who share it, those things will be harder to explain later in a way that doesn't seem convenient for the plot line of the show. In other words, they are defining the parameters of this bond so that when Rand is at the mouth of Shayul Ghul during the Last Battle and Alanna releases him right before she dies so that he will be able to fight on, that will be more meaningful. I have seen a lot of book readers that are upset on all of the time spent on this part of the world when so much else about it goes undeveloped, but it just seems like they are using bonds to do two things at once.
Love seeing reddit lose its mind over the adaptation. I'm personally loving it. The show lets us see the wheel of time story in a different way, a different version. We have the original story in the books, and if someone wants that, they can go read it. The show gives us a different take, something that could have been.
Absolutely agree! We’re lucky to get two different versions of the story. The format demands big differences so we might as well embrace some of the things we are getting to see that we never would have otherwise.
Where should we draw the line though? Is the purpose of this show not to tell the Wheel of Time story? Would Jordan have wanted 2 different stories associated with his IP? Many other shows/movies have been adapted from books quite faithfully and were well loved for it. I don't understand why this one has to be an exception and the story has to be nearly completely rewritten. Your last sentence is basically defining fan fiction to be honest. I'm assuming I'll be called a troll or whatever else for saying this, but it's just my genuine opinion. Thanks
I love your insights in this video. I also think they are setting up Logain as a false solution to Rand learning to channel so that it makes more sense that he would choose a Forsaken to learn from. Moiraine's letter after the docks also says "perhaps, after all, it was the only way." It also keeps Logain relevant as a character for later plotlines. I also want the show to actually give us Logain's propphesied Glory moment that we miss in the books. I never even thought about the idea that Lan deliberately wanted Maksim to find the poem...but I love this idea. I liked this episode a lot on my first two watches, but now after watching Episode 5, I love episode four -- it really did all the set up and stakes-setting for incredible pay offs in the next chapter.
I loved episode four! Even more so upon rewatch, but I agree with the majority that the Lan scenes were a little too much. Really hope they make more sense in the grand scheme of things!
I think Lan got something different out of each of his scenes and they were good scenes. I think it probably could have been pared down a bit but I’m waiting to see the grand scheme too!
When Ivan reflexively laughed when Lan described what Morraine said, I really thought that he "got" the duplicity in Morraine's statement that Lan had missed and was about to explain it. I didn't mind what he said but I think the writers missed an opportunity here, especially one to set Lan off, back on Morraine's trail.
Yes, I think the bond between Lan and Moiraine will be restored. I'm guessing at the end of the season, because that's where I'm guessing Siuan comes in. Siuan and Lan and Rand will have a chat. Maybe Moiraine will sneak in there as well. Moiraine's shield is tied off in a knot. We know someone who's good at untying knots since childhood. We have a male channeler. I don't know how, but I think this will all come together and Rand will be able to untie the shield. I'm probably off on some details, but it would be an interesting end to the season, with Siuan chatting with Lan and Rand, and Moiraine getting the shield undone.
Nice analysis! My very first thought after seeing Lanfear start to regenerate, was that they were somehow combining her with the gholam. Especially since the episode connected her so heavily with blood. However, I now agree that this is just simplifying the resurrection process. I'm sure you'll have a lot to say about episode 5. It's packed!
Thanks for making these! I always look forward to your videos. The show just keeps getting better with each episode this season. While I haven't read the books, I've heard that Liandrin was originally kind of a mustache-twirling villain - this version seems infinitely more interesting. The writing is great and Kate Fleetwood completely kills it. The little twitches, the looks, the way she carries herself... She really acts with her whole body, makes the most out of each second she's on screen and I'm so there for it. Lanfear also seems very promising. Appropriately menacing without going overboard, I think. I'm very eager to see more of her and explore her dynamics with other characters. Please tell me she's gonna have a prominent role going forward and not just be the flavor of the season :D
Kate Fleetwood is stunningly good, I love her Liandrin. She’s formidable, but also so layered. We hate her and we feel for her at the same time. That’s so tough to pull off. I am loving Lanfear as well. She’s also more nuanced. Based on the books, I think she will definitely have a major role next season. After that it will depend how they handle a particular story beat, but she has potential for staying power even if she might dip in and out.
Loving the season so far, I am also in the camp of let's stop fake killing Nynaeve anymore, but I am less put off by the choice for the arches than what they had to scramble and do in S1E8. Enjoying your analysis as always!
As much as I love the books, I really think the show shines the brightest when it deviates the most from the books. That said, I don't think the Lan-Alanna-Warders will have a sufficiently satisfying payoff. Can't help but wonder whether the Mat-Min pairing is a consequence of the scheduling conflict that saw Thom written out of this season.
I do think Thom would have been in Mat’s storyline if the actor had been available, that would have made sense. I wonder if Min would have also or something else. There are always these practical concerns in TV that books don’t have to worry about.
Anvaere is Moiraine's older sister, in books, though. While I truly enjoyed Liandrin's aging up, with Moiraine I don't see the necessity. It messes with her timeline, doesn't add anything to the long age and separation of the Aes Sedai that Liandrin didn't do. The same effect, for Moiraine's character rather than age, could have been kept with her remaining Anvaere's younger sister, as Anvaere was from her father's first, political but loveless, marriage. Moiraine was already(in book) her father's favorite, so there's still that resentment possible when she left. This leaves me wondering not about the Damodrama, but how this affects Mo and Siuan's history. Absolutely loved Ihvon with Lan. Never understood the idea of "uncomfortable silence". ... I just double checked and Moiraine (in book) is younger than me at this point...... ummm... ouch
One thing I think the age change does do, is that it potentially makes Moiraine the senior Damodred, which could have interesting Daes Daemar implications.

So Min bonding with Mat and Aviendha with Perrin is really interesting to me because it opens up possibilities. And if we get to skip Faile altogether I'll be really happy. Nah, Rand will still hook up with all three but to make it more modern I think at least Elayne and Avi will also hook up with each other or the show will imply that they participate in three- and/or foursomes with each other. I think that's why there's so much time devoted to Alanna's polyamorous relationship with her warders. Plus we have Rafe's confirmation that he's more interested in polyamorie than polygamie.
@@voldy18 Υeah, I get it, you still can't come to terms with the changes from the books. It won't happen. Maybe some stretched out notion of the idea of it may happen but you clearly missed Min's joke about it last season. That pretty much confirms it won't happen. Alanna and her warders are different. That's empowering.
I did not like this episode. For me, this was the worst episode of season 2. It spent too much time with Lan. I would rather have had more scenes with Perrin to explain his powers or Mat scenes. If you turn on subtitle features, the old tongue is translated. But even without translation, Ishamael says Lanfear when he starts his speech. I liked the opening and the final few scenes ("Moiraine's"killing" of Lanfear and when she blinks right before they fade to black: Min's dream; and Liandrin's betrayal). The rest, meh I enjoy your analysis Rebecca
This show is "rushing beat-to-beat," giving us completely ludicrous character development to characters who should not be prominent, & creating new characters with backgrounds & relationships that completely waste valuable time that should have been spent developing Rand, Mat, & Perrin. Why are you very strange people pretending that this show is good?! This is some of the worst storytelling that I've ever seen. Everybody is teleporting all over the place, doing random things that never occurred in the book. We've got Nynaeve - who hates weapons & fighting - training the sword with warders in the tower, while Rand has had not a single lesson. We don't fet the fan favorite scene of Mat taking on Galad & Gawyn in the yard either. On top of that, Mat is randomly evil now - why?! I'm calling you a liar if you are claiming this is a well written show. You are grading it on something else. Something nonsensical.
Thank you for the content and continuing to discuss reasons behind the changes necessitated by adapting book to tv.

The rest, meh
I enjoy your analysis Rebecca
I knew not everyone would like the extra Lan. I still think it’s a good episode but episode 5 was better!
Obligatory comment
