It's not like Ted Leonsis is popular in Washington DC anyways: the failed attempt to move the team to Northern Virginia has made him even less popular with Washington fans, even before the Cap Friendly purchase made everyone (including Capitals fans) dislike him. According to the New York Times, a handful of NHL teams were interested in buying Cap Friendly, and it wasn't just the Washington Capitals that had interest. I don't think we'll ever find out if Ted Leonsis would keep Cap Friendly open to the public if the NHL would allow him to. But they're not allowing him to.
@@gabrielrockman the NHL's refusal to move stuff like this inhouse is truly baffling and continues to cause them to trail behind other sports. And by the NHL rules, the Capitals can't keep it open to the public once they own it. Which is what it is. Yes, other teams were interested and no matter who won that bid would catch the wrath of the fans. That just happens to be Washington. So they have to own that too unfortunately
