WHAT WENT WRONG FOR TEAM CANADA? | Scout's Analysis
In this episode, we break down the stunningly disappointing display of Team Canada at the 2025 World Juniors, finishing 3rd in their group before being bounced in the quarterfinals by a gritty Team Czechia. First, we delve into their 5 games at the tournament and the stats that paint a picture of a team that struggled to score, and conceded too many chances for even excellent goaltending to hold out indefinitely. Next, we look at the impact that Canada's player selection and stylistic approach had on the team's offensive potency and outright struggles. Finally, we wrap up the show by looking at the various coaching mistakes and rampant stubbornness that sunk Canada in the end, including cancelling practices.

Canada didn't finish behind Latvia lol
Three ways management is blaming the players: 1) cant coach discipline, its on the players to not take penalties. 2) cancel practices because THE PLAYERS were exhausted. 3) wouldnt change anything: management didnt bring the wrong players, the players just dropped the ball.
Dave Cameron = Allen Iverson Practice???
Precisely what I was thinking about during that segment. - Seb
Just put a selection committee together that picks the most offensively talented players. The whole thing is so stupid and conceited. Getting players to play depth roles makes no sense. If the fourth line is filled with All Stars that can score points and you win in high scoring games why does the style matter?
Latvia !!!!
How is canada a top team, and Czech Republic isn’t
Linards Feldbergs of Latvia is IMO the clear CLEAR deserving winner of goalie of the tournament. Guy has been absolutely unreal and is the huge reason why Latvia beat Canada and are doing well in this world juniors
Heinemen is palying a good game and he's not afraid of hitting
They can call up Beck as soon as they find a team that will give us a bucket of broken pucks for Dvorak.
We give up #73 Tyler Toffoli to get #51 Emil Heineman who was trade to Calgary from Florida for #9 Sam Bennett. We acquired #73 Tyler Toffoli as a free agent.
There were a couple other pieces in those deals, but yeah it was a smart player to target in the Toffoli deal.
Habs bundled that Avs 2nd to get Hage in the Lehky trade.
Yes they did. But it wasn’t the primary piece in moving up, so the trade still is won by the Avs in hindsight, but that deal at the draft was really shrewd by the Habs. Hage is a player
@LockedOnNHLProspects Yes the can of corn I got wasnt on sale but it was great in the Sheppards pie. Still eating. Hole cernal or cream corn. Matters not.
Question guys: In 3 years, which Hutson would you rather have on your team and why? Lane or Cole?
Lane, quite comfortably. I (Seb) was relatively high on Cole last season as well, he was in my mid 20s. That said, Lane has more dynamism, creativity, and defensive awareness. I’m not convinced Cole has top pairing upside while Lane is already showing his ability to play that role
@@LockedOnNHLProspects Thanks Sebastian! Great show!
Your analysis of Heineman was spot on!
Thanks! He’s been excellent so far this season. Could become a solid bottom six piece and potentially an Armia replacement if they opt not to resign him
Again, lehkonen was traded for Barron and a 2nd rd pick (which was used to draft Michael Hage) so it was not that bad of a trade.
lehkonen for michael hage and alex carrier is a great trade
Montreal is getting near a playoff wild card spot. As of today, they are drafting 13th next summer . Does that mean that this rebuild is close to ending ??? It does look like that for the next 6 to 10 yrs, Suzuki will be the 1C and Hutson the top#1 defenseman...time will tell !!!
The rebuild doesn't end yet. Three drafts in the top 5 is the beginning. This season was one for the Canadiens to turn the corner and get out of the basement of the Eastern Conference. It's going well so far this year.
We’re closer to the rebuild’s end than beginning, for sure. Whether this recent form is sustainable or not remains to be seen. Wouldn’t be shocked if they decided to trade up from whatever slot they end up in in the 1st round this year to add another potential game changer, ideally at C
@LockedOnNHLProspects Hummm!!! It is very hard to move up within the top5 even if you offer a top10 plus other picks. Indeed, teams don't possibly want to let go a game changer for several picks...time will tell !!!
As a Sharks fan, it's looking more and more like they will pick in the top 5. I liked the idea of Sharks taking Eklund if they were outside the top 5, but I'm starting to think he might be the right pick at 4 or 5 (if they pick there). I don't like the idea of passing on Misa or Martone, but maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if they do.
When he isn't skating face-first into the post, Schaefer looked like a monster. No way I'd take Hagens over him... This is assuming Schafer is expected to make a 100% recovery.
I would think the development of the 16-19 old player would be accelerated by playing in the CHL ( 2nd to none ) Then they can go NCAA at 18-19 -20 Then turn pro at 20 if their NHL teams would go along The NHL would love a 2O year old draft but legal reasons limit it If a player is a late development type he can stay in CHL till 20 Play NCAA for 4 years then get a shot in NHL or AHL Beats the ECHL and you get an education to boot When you think of injuries , % of players who make the NHL or have a short career, a NCAA /Canadian College education is a good move and the Canadian Colleges/Universities are very good McGill Mc Master. The colleges in the Maritimes UT London Waterloo are excellent How many late bloomers ( Defencemen ) in Canadian Colleges? I think the NHL has not mined this as much as they should If a player is 23-25 he can still play although he has to come in ready to play
Carter "AH-MEE-CO", not "AM-ICK-OH"
As someone who's watched every BU game- disagree on Eiserman not progressing. I think he's recently turned a corner in terms of puck carrying and playmaking. Also seems more willing to throw the body around
I think Martone is a more physical/aggressive Draisaitl. If Draisaitl and Bill Guerin had a child lol. Or maybe Gary Roberts instead of Guerin. One scout had a better-skating James Van Riemsdyk, which I didn't like.
1st.overall.pick.goes.chicago.blackhawks.big.deal.
Can we get Caps prospects update next
He's a stud but too bad he hasn't scored in the last five games.
As a ducks fan, thank you for the review! Can’t wait to see Sennecke next year! Gawd we need him… Leo needs him.
Undetaking the task of becoming a Frozen Four plus Stanley Cup prospecter for the silver. #goislanders20
Sharks pool so deep. You guys did a great job covering a lot of them, but as someone mentioned Jack Thompson shows promise and of course Ethan Cardwell as well.
Hutson is fantastic, great great prospect and young player gonna be a stud in this league, just don’t see him in the same category as a Celebrini, at least not yet
Celebrini does seem to be in a class of his own, as amazing as Michkov has been
Great to see some Wolf love
I always keep forgetting about Graf, good to see his development continue. A prospect that got lost in your review was Thomas Bordeleau. IMO is on a make or break year. He’s finally healthy and should be on deck for a call up. Would like to see Grier extend him on another deal to prove it in 2025 to create some team equity. So refreshing to see this team just loaded to the gills with prospects and potentially another top 5 pick after this season.
If Celebrini can stay relatively healthy then he wins it.
An article on Ethan Procyszyn recently says that he watches Trevor Zegras to learn from the details of his game and his playmaking. I’m curious if he does that on his own or if the team is suggesting it.
Askarov first two ahL games in sj were shutouts, that’s a shaky start? Oooof
Yep. Kind of an odd bit there.
Yeah more attention to detail is needed with these locked on channels
Thrun’s a left shot. He seems more a #6-7 D at best. Not quick enough and no physicality to make up for it. Shakir may be about to leapfrog him.
Yeah, he's been kinda invisible to me this season. As long as he is playing solid defensively to stay on the 3rd line at the NHL later I'm okay with that
I think the sharks wanted Musty to be traded due to Sudburys playstyle that doesn’t really translate to the NHL. It was about his development
Also Jack Thompsons been pretty solid in the NHL
Yeah, he'll probably be a solid 3rd liner or on the 2nd line with Muhkhamadulin
And Shakir had a groin injury to start the year, hence the slow start
Askarov started the season with two shutouts.....
Hey guys, the video clarity wasn't that great for this video...
Crystal and Wood did not make the team ? How old is this?
We added a note in the description, recorded just before that news came out
Great episode guys. Sharks fans are all salivating as we hope more of these guys develop into NHL regulars. Curious......does the Sharks pool match / exceed the rest of the league in: 1) Higher end talent 2) Just the sheer number of prospects that can develop into legit NHLers? 3) BOTH? Thx!
Cheers! Definitely have the most high end talent and are pretty high up in terms of deepest pools (maybe around 5th best). We did a whole series ranking the league’s prospect pools this summer and there’s no shock that SJS ended up at 1. th-cam.com/video/Dm8GS0GN6lA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CMvK7O9vcKezaqKN
No thomas bordeleau, guess he has fallen off quite a bit
He's with the San Jose baracuda
It’s been a quiet stretch for his development. We can only fit so many names into each episode and he was among the final cuts, still a notable name, but outshone by younger players on more promising trajectories
Graf and Cardwell have passed him on depth charts tbh. An untimely injury before camp wrecked his chances to make the team. He's the classic "not good enough for top 6 but not suited for bottom 6 player right now."
@@Inub0iI think he could be a good peice to add to a trade at the deadline
He’s really picked up lately. I’d argue he’s been better than Guschin recently.
If they can somehow draft Schaefer then it'll be game over.
They won't be bad enough
Sharks are a bit higher in the standings due to games played. Point % they are still bottom 3 or 4. Blackwood trade will cost them their share of games. Add in trading a Granlund / Ceci / etc. and there is "hope" for a bottom 4 draft pick. True....might not be bad enough for Schaefer but those Top 4 are a big cut above the rest of the top of the draft class.
But imagine if they can have not 1, but 2 Eklund's... Might match where they are drafting more as well (around 6 or 7). But yes a d man definitely fits that prospect pool better and Schaefer is next level
Any of the top 4 guys would be huge
Game over for what? I think they're doing a good job rebuilding.
How does Wang compare to Jesse Pulkkinen?!
Zegras is good! Everyone in the media just rags on him. He’s been Anaheim’s best center this year (when he’s played down the middle which is another story)
1000% Someone with sense speaking the truth.
McTavish has been the one struggling. Zegras’ play has actually skyrocketed this year. Points were slow to arrive but defense is a strength now and was about a point per game guy in his last 10ish games before injury. McTavish has looked lost offensively and defensively this season, transition game too. Isn’t using his skill or frame effectively nor his skating ability. Our current coach doesn’t know how to create offense at the NHL level and basically says so in all his post game interviews. Only our smartest and most skilled players (basically Zegras, Terry, Zellweger, & Lacombe) are scoring regularly. Carlsson and Mintyukov are having sophomore slumps and McTavish I don’t know what’s up with him. Gauthier is playing fine for a rookie, he’s played down the lineup to learn “4th line habits.” Not worried about Cutter at all. His shot selection is limited, always trying to snipe corners and missing wide but his playmaking is starting to shine.
Sennecka ❤❤❤
Fellas, someone at EP said that Schaefer has a higher ceiling than Scott Niedermayer. Do you agree?
@wolfgangpuckstories2024
You misread that comment. I was talking about Levshunov / Buium / Dickinson / Parekh / Yakemchuk (in the original question) not Drew Doughty, Quinn Hughes, Scott Niedermayer.
I do stats for the Capitols, and it's been a treat to watch Ryker Lee and Mason Moe, I project Moe as a winger. The line creates lots of events, but is prone to getting hemmed in their zone. I'd be interested in your take on Caps overager John Stout. He's been a top defensemen and, while not too flashy, does "normal stuff". He earned an 'A' for the WJAC team, and leads the USHL in plus minus (a bad stat) while having 4 penalty minutes through 20 games.
